No, they are completely different applications. The CPU component is what's required to "feed" the GPU and handle trasnfers to/from storage.

In general, it's best to take project-specific questions to the project message boards, since the people there know it best.

LHC does not currently have any GPU applications; you can check the applications page of a project to see what architectures it will run on. If there is a GPU app, you will see something like CUDA, ATI/AMD, OpenCL or the like listed. https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/apps.php

Has been down for almost five days now, I thought it curious that there hasn't been a mention anywhere else. Does anyone have more info?

I have some work that I thought would get completed in time, but with the website outage it's now three days overdue.

If you're not sure which project would be best for those GPUs, you can use WUprop (http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/delai.py) to see what projects run on them and what the crunching performance is like.
7) Message boards : Questions and problems : New motherboard fried, not sure if BOINC is to blame (Message 84607)

My DVR has been crunching BOINC in the living room for about 8 years now, 24/7 and the only issue I've had with it is a hard drive and power supply. If you decide to come back to BOINC, I would monitor your CPU temperatures and make sure you're not sustaining high temperatures. You can usually get the maximum allowed temperature from the manufacturer's data (Intel Ark shows this as Tjunction or Tcase) and then I use a program like TThrottle to adjust BOINC on the fly to keep a set temperature. I usually set it 10-15 C below the max allowed temperature. You can also use that program to control unwanted fan noise.

Since you're not crunching 24/7, I would definitely make sure your CPU and case cooling is adequate, but a motherboard failure that soon in a computer's life is more likely just a manufacturing defect. Nice that you got it covered under warranty.

I doubt there would be much of a market for a BOINC-specific PC, since the software is so flexible that it can run on nearly anything. And, the optimal hardware very much depends on the project. You can run it "headless", a command-line distribution of Linux would probably be the best for that and remote in for any management tasks. Or, you could use Windows and run something like BOINCtasks that allows you to manage the BOINC Manager on multiple PCs. The possibilities are endless.

The thermal compound that sits between your CPU and the heatsink also breaks down over time, and becomes less efficient at conducting heat between the two surfaces. Might be time to clean the old stuff off and reapply some new thermal compound. It's been a while since I've done mine, but I typically see a drop of at least 5 C when I've done that.

For any new builds, I highly recommend using one of the closed-loop liquid coolers. They keep things super chilly, and are easy to install and use.
12) Message boards : Android : Can I also use my Kindle Fire to crunch data for Boinc projects? (Message 84099)
Posted 30 Dec 2017 by noderaser
Post:
The Kindle Fire is just an Android tablet, you should be able to run BOINC like you would on any other Android device; however you will have to "jailbreak" it because BOINC is not available in the limited app store on the Amazon devices. Depending on what version of the device you have, you may also have to upgrade the Android OS version since the original only shipped with Android 2, and you will need 4.1 or higher to run BOINC.

Secondary issue: When the system resources are maxed out by BOINC, the user of the computer will have a poor userexperience, since it will appear slow.

Having been a distributed computing volunteer since about 2002, I can say that this is generally not the case; the exceptions being poorly coded projects that generate errors, and GPU projects. CPU projects generally don't cause many issues for the user.

Best of luck on your efforts; adding BOINC to fleets of computers is what the platform needs to survive, since going at single users has not produced much growth in available hosts in recent years. However, unless you yourself have some place in the decision-making of the organization, you will probably need the assistance of a "champion" who can exert some authority. I used to work in a light IT job at a school district a number of years ago; while I was able to do BOINC on a few machines that were used for back-office functions, I was not allowed to deploy BOINC en-masse. The reasons cited then were bandwidth requirements, and simply putting more software on machines that would then have to be supported by IT staff as problems arose. Had I been able to find an administrator to provide some direction for such an endeavor, the district IT director might have been more cooperative.

Regarding the security concerns, WCG is good enough for IBM to run on their own systems--but they have a slightly customized client, and control over the servers running the project. You would definitely need to stick with a project supported/administered by a reputable institution.

noderaser, has anyone pointed out to Einstein about this? They still have it listed in their applications list.

I just did, I thought Bernd had said they were done at some point, but I seem to have lost the bookmarks on the PowerPC threads with the conversion to their new website. But, there was a pinned thread in the Technical News forum:

You can also set GPU computation to pause when a specific application is started. On my DVR pc, I have it set for Chrome; if you don't want it to automatically pause during web browsing, use a different browser for watching videos than you would for other tasks.

Einstein has not had PowerPC tasks for a long time. You should also try Moo! Wrapper. There aren't many PowerPC projects left anymore; I still have a PowerBook G4 but haven't used it recently to say which projects are still giving work. WUprop used to be my guide for figuring out which projects were still good, but they're not reporting anything on PowerPC anymore. Best of luck.

Unless you're on dialup or another non-persistent connection, why do you need to update manually? BOINC Manager is designed to do everything in the background without user intervention.

20) Message boards : Projects : Supercomputer with Idle Time (Message 81490)

Post:
When you get into supercomputer territory, there's a lot more overhead in terms of utilities, HVAC, and personnel that make it expensive to run... Unless they're looking to make some "donations" in that regard, that's probably why they're resistant. That's one of the reasons BOINC got its start, so that the expense of running a supercomputer could be distributed among volunteers, for groups that cannot afford to do so on their own.
