I wish I could say the same. I upgraded on July 30th from 5.10.45. It was running fine until this morning. I woke up to "Computation Error" for all my WUs again. There's no hardware error at play, as I was able to run 5.10.45 with no errors for 10-11 days on all he same projects and some of the same WUs. But just 3-4 days on this and I hit this brick wall again.

Oh well, time to pass the pertinent info on to Rom and go from there.

Well, it took almost four days, but it finally happened again. It started this morning when crunching something for 3x+1@home. I suspended all tasks (although everything had already failed) and then started processing again (without closing BOINC) and it downloaded two new work units, attempted to start them, and promptly spit out a Computation Error. Seeing as how all my WUs are now hosed, I have nothing to lose by dropping back to 5.10.45 to see if I continue to have issues. I know that just closing 6.2.14 and re-opening it would fix the problem, but I'll go ahead and revert to the old version to try and rule out a hardware problem.

Is there a way to install 5.10.45 after having 6.2.14 installed and still keep all my WUs

Sure, just uninstall 6.2.14 through Add/Remove programs and install 5.10.45
The separate data directory can be fixed by moving all contents of it to the BOINC directory. Your work should not be harmed this way.

The accounts BOINC made should not interfere, but in case they do, let me know and I'll walk you through deleting them.

Thanks much for all your help. Here's to hoping I don't have to resort to doing that, but if I do, at least I know everything should stay intact. :)

Sounds like hardware trouble, to be honest.

What does 5.10.45 do when you reinstall that one?

If it continues to do this on 6.2.14, I'll reinstall 5.10.45 again and see if it's a problem with that as well. I want to say that I didn't start getting the computational error until quite recently. My hardware is all brand new as of May - that doesn't mean it's not causing a problem of some sort, mind you - so I really hope that's not the the culprit.

Is there a way to install 5.10.45 after having 6.2.14 installed and still keep all my WUs, or will I need to download fresh WUs for crunching with that version? I seem to recall there being a change between 5.* and 6.* involving where WUs are stored and such, but I could be off base. I just don't want to screw things up more than they need to be.

Because I was on 6.2.12 (see the thread about 6.2.12 throwing computation errors on all WUs after a given period of time)

BOINC doesn't crunch anything, so any computation errors are 99.9% of the time caused by the science application.

Yeah. It's just odd. Because I run...well, pretty much every project that will spit out WUs. And every single project starts failing. The last time it happened I wasn't able to catch which one it was that started the cascading chain of failures/errors, unfortunately.

When coming from a pre-6.2 client, you need the reboot as the accounts that BOINC run under need to be registered into Windows. There is no easy way around that, unless you know of one, then tell it.

There is a warning on the last installer screen that the reboot is needed and that it only happens when you click Finish.

We're asked to skip the testing of .13 for now as there is a condition missing on the reboot function. So I'd advise you to uninstall BOINC, if you can without needing that reboot first.

Yeah. The last time I truncated an install of BOINC at that point, and didn't click finish, I ended up losing all the WUs I had in progress, and it was...let's just say ugly. It shouldn't have done that, but something went wonky, and I was stuck in some weird install-limbo. So I figured I'd go with the lesser of two evils, and ignore the reboot option - which, it doesn't let you do. I even tried the trick of going into the registry and hunting down the keys that usually flag for the reboot and getting rid of them but that didn't fix it.

So in the future, this type of thing will only be required when upgrading from a pre-6.2 client? Because I was on 6.2.12 (see the thread about 6.2.12 throwing computation errors on all WUs after a given period of time), not anything earlier than 6.2. I am very aware that these are testing versions. I'm just trying to get back to a version that doesn't do something really really screwy for me, and I jump onto new versions ASAP in hopes of finding one that's stable. Thanks for the fast reply.

Yeah, but the problem is, that the client won't start. So I can't run BOINC (which I'd very much like to do) for at least the next 12 hours unless I stop all my open work and piss off everyone who's currently using it as a multimedia device via TV out.

I must have viewed the changelog prior to the update, I thought I had caught the new one but apparently that's not the case. I'm just sick and tired of software that wants to force the user to reboot in order to be able to use it.

This is a new and unpleasant change. Is this going to be standard for all future versions, or was this a one-time thing?

It would be nice if you would notify users *before* they begin the installation that the new client will require a reboot in order to use the software. Not all of us like rebooting, or maybe have other tasks ongoing that prevent rebooting at a given time, and wouldn't install said software until we knew we could reboot.

I just wanted to state that I've been experiencing a similar problem since 6.2.11. BOINC will run fine for approximately 36 hours or so, and then all the WUs will start getting computational errors. Although in my case, closing the program and restarting it corrects the issue. I'm not sure if there's a specific project that's been triggering it or if it's just something that will happen after a certain number of hours no matter what's running. I was going to start just restarting the program each night at bedtime but so that I can provide more useful information to get it corrected I'll let it happen again so that I can try and pin down something specific about the cause.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit. Here's a list of my hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Rev. 2.0, 4GB of G.Skill PC6400 DDR2, 160 gigabyte WD SATA drive (with six other hard drives of varying sizes/makes), XFX 9600GT, powered by a Corsair 650 watt PSU. If there's any other information that may be of use, please let me know.

Actually, it turns out that it wasn't in protected mode for the install. A clean install refuses to see all my old data or WUs however, so I think I'm going to have to start from scratch. Not the most desirable option, but it's tolerable. I don't think I lost terribly much crunching time out of it. At least the graphics problem is passed on to the correct channels now and will hopefully be fixed down the road.

Protected install. Which is one of the worst messes I have ever experienced since I beta tested Vista back in 2006. Uninstalling or attempting to repair the installation fails, trying to rename folders associated with BOINC (so I can do a reinstall) fails. I cannot get permissions to properly change for the associated folders so I can do what I need to, options are either greyed out or un-do themselves after I change them. This is my own fault, I know, for installing a development version :)

At the same time, I must say, this protected mode install needs to be more fully explained to the user at install so they know exactly what they're getting into. It makes it sound like a good, safe option, but it ends up creating more hassle in the end if something goes wrong. I'm assuming this feature is going to be standard for the 6.* clients?

Which projects are opening their graphics Windows?

Seti@home, Spinhgenge, and Leiden Classical for sure. Those are the ones I've specifically caught last night or this morning. I believe malariacontrol was also doing it, but I just caught a glance of that as I ran by the computer at one point last night and didn't have a chance to stop and take a closer look. If I catch any others doing it today I'll post it to this thread. Initially, I thought it was all projects that had graphics available, but that turned out not to be the case.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit (SP1). If you need any other information about my system I'll keep checking this thread periodically.

And yes, I do realize this is a development version and not the recommended version, but when the recommended client is causing me headaches I often will use the development version to see if that corrects the problem. In this case, it corrected the problem I was having with that version, but it appears to have created a new one. I had planned with my new system to use only the recommended clients, but after a few weeks of frustration I finally caved.

On my old system, when I was still running BOINC, I pretty much stuck to the development versions because I kept hoping the scheduler would improve. That's no longer an issue with my faster processor and being able to crunch through WUs significantly faster.

I've been running 6.2.6 for about 36 hours now with few problems. The one problem that does exist, however, is extraordinarily frustrating, and I have not yet found a way to fix it. Some projects that have graphics - not ALL, but some - open a window to display graphics for the workunit whether I want graphics to be displayed or not. Some of these projects are seti@home, Spinhgenge, and Leiden Classical. Closing the graphics stops the WU and either a different WU will start or, most typically, that same WU will start again and open a new graphics window. I've checked the options in the BOINC client itself and haven't found anything that will help, and I've gone into individual project options and haven't seen a way to prevent graphics from running entirely - simply ways to set how much processor they use. I set graphics CPU usage at 0 on seti and it still continues to pop the graphics up for WUs. Is there a fix for this problem? I've been out of the BOINC community since approximately last August and missed most of the development and changes that went on between then and now.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'd rather not waste processor power on graphics and I also hate having my taskbar cluttered with 1-2 extra windows.

Well, 6.2.6 installs...

Unfortunately, it forces graphics to display for any WU that has them now. Closing the graphics window kills the task and then it force-starts again with the graphics enabled. If anyone knows anything about fixing this issue, it would be much appreciated.

I also tried to install, John, with no luck - although I wasn't willing to go the length of a reboot to attempt it. I will say this - in addition to saying the installation was interrupted, it had the audacity to tell me that no changes had been made. But it had, indeed, decided to uninstall my old version of BOINC. That was easily rectified, but still an irksome inconvenience.

I saw from the changelog thread that it's apparently rare that people can get it to install - if at all. GRR. That really makes me want to work my behind off to get it working just for the sake of saying I can. But given my aversion to rebooting, and my latest bout of fun that involved iTunes hijacking my DVD burner, resulting in numerous reboots/issues, I think I'll shy away from this for now.
