I found this on eBay. Cheap enough for me to buy it, and probably to buy one for someone else. What I'm unsure about is how QCN actually detects the sensor. Obviously I don't want to buy anything unless I have a guarantee that it will actually be compatible.

Anyone know?

Yes, I noticed that bit. I'm not in one, unfortunately. Still, useful bit of info if I want to try and expose the project to others.

So far, I've only seen the west coat of the US as an area of interest. Is there a list of areas? I assume these areas extend beyond North America as well, right?

EDIT: Looking back on this post, I think my usage of the word 'unfortunately' should be revised...

Hmm, that's rather steep for me, but I think I'll still use that information in case others might be interested.

So, if someone were to run QCN, should they run the default sensor, the continual, or both?

Also, slightly related, but what would be the cheapest cost of the equipment required to run QCN? I haven't seen anything overly cheap, myself, but I could just be looking in the wrong places. QCN and Radiation@Home are two projects I can't run because of the requirements.

Okay, I'm probably still confused. What does each one do? I'm still not sure what the actual differences are.

Basically I just want to write a little something that advertises and describes a few BOINC projects, but I got stuck with QC because there are multiple pages.

So if I wanted to describe the QC network, I should only bother mentioning the main one?

EDIT: I assume this is the other one you mentioned? http://www.ras.unam.mx/sensor/

http://qcn.emsc-csem.org/sensor/
http://qcn.twgrid.org/sensor/

...What's the difference? Is this something geographically related, so that when a user in one country adds the QC project from the BOINC project list, the closest webpage opens, or what?

So, bottom line...What is the recommended way to go, then? It seems like any potential method mentioned so far is in some way flawed.

Man, this was so much easier to do with Folding@Home.

So I need to download the .gz files for every single project, if I want to combine the scores? Damn, that's going to present a lot of issues.

I'm still confused, though. How do other stat sites gather information on users, then? If the user IDs vary between projects, how does boincstats know that user x has starts from projects a, b, and c? Although even boincstats seems to be imperfect as well. I've got four duplicates of myself showing different projects im in.

Since you mentioned the email address, I assume that there must be something you can do with it, right?

Yes, I can see what you mean about not being sure if it's the correct way. It would be annoying for users to have to keep changing their cpid just to have their stats working on my end.

Obviously there must be something that never changes, otherwise other stat sites wouldn't be able to gather the data. Any idea what that would be?

Alright, just so I understand this (it's 3 in the morning here, and I'm pretty tired, so apologies), if I wanted to do what I mentioned, which is to have a user be able to show his or her own stats for combined BOINC points across all projects, I would need to program something that uses:

http://boinc.netsoft-online.com/get_user.php?cpid=xxxx

This is what I gathered from a link within your link. I assume the cpid is the unique ID each user will have, right? So that way, a user can enter their ID into whatever I will make, then my script will take that number and obtain the relevant information from the link above, automatically adding the cpid value.

If this is correct, where would one obtain this cpid value from?

I'm about to start programming a customised stat display for individual users to be able to show their total points across all BOINC projects, but I've run into a problem before I could even begin...

Where do I find these stats?

Of course, I know where I could get these stats if I personally wanted to look at them. Just go to boincstats or some other stat site. However, I would soon become unpopular with any site owners if I made excessive requests to some of their pages when these stats are loaded en masse, so I need to look for some flat files. Something that is nothing but stats, like these.

Surely something for combined BOINC project scores exist somewhere, right?

So, a while back, I mass created teams on many BOINC projects, as a preemptive action for when my group expands. Over time, my group did expand, and I find myself needing to change the placeholder description which told users to go focus on one specific project first. However, when I changed the description, I found that the next day, it had reverted back to the placeholder description. I've tried this on multiple projects, and they all have the same issue, so this must be some global BOINC issue, as I'm not sure how badly I would have to be screwing up writing a single sentence description.

Anyone have any idea what's up?

I'm using ubuntu-server as my VM, and it runs several instances of MJ12. If you don't know what that is, doesn't matter. However, every few minutes (sometimes much more. It's random) it will archive, and cause a spike in CPU usage. If there isn't enough CPU power, there is a slight chance that the VM locks up completely and irreversibly, until it is reset.

But at this point, I'm really just complaining for the sake of complaining, so I'll end it here.

No, F@H was just a comparison. I'm afraid my VM must run at all times.

The problem is that even though my VM is at normal priority, those BOINC processes (it's easier to call them that) at low priority still take away CPU power from the VM. I don't think it works by taking whatever CPU power is left over from normal priority processes, otherwise this wouldn't be an issue.

Oh well, if there's no option to make it idle priority, I've got my answer then. Thanks.

As much as I love to help in the name of science and stuff, ever since I installed BOINC, the processes tied to it have been sucking away too much CPU power from my virtual machine, causing it to crash, and forcing me to go through the lengthy restart process. Now surely BOINC can be configured to run at idle priority, much like Folding@Home, no?
