Tasks do not begin at boot unless boincmgr starts up
(Message 54378)
Posted 7 Jun 2014 by ![]() Post: For some reason, I thought I already made this thread, so forgive me if my memory is just bad. Anyway: I've noticed that on two of the computers I have that run BOINC, if I disable starting boincmgr at login, tasks do not continue from the previous time the computer was on. I have to manually start boincmgr to get the tasks working again, after which, I can completely exit the manager. I'm pretty sure that there was a time when BOINC could start the work units and then them all, without having the manager present. Hell, it makes sense that the units would all work, despite exiting the manager later on. What gives? Both computers are Windows. One is 8, and I Think the other is 7. |

No PrimeGrid work units received

Posted 6 Jun 2014 by ![]() Post: This computer was only just installed a few days ago, so I'll assume both Catalyst and BOINC are still the latest versions. No other GPU projects are present, but I'll give them a shot. I still haven't found time to access the computer, so it might take another day or two. I'll probably try the older Catalyst drivers at some point as well. The computer has an A6-6400K, so it has its own GPU built in. Before I popped the video card in, it was working with GPU units just fine. The only reason I put this old card in was because the APU was running hot, and I didn't want it getting throttled. |

Posted 5 Jun 2014 by ![]() Post: Ahh, sorry, I meant both of those pages. As for OpenCL support, I'll have to take a look at that tomorrow when I'm back on the computer in question. I assume I can use something like GPU-Z to check for this support, yes? Now, assuming it does support OpenCL, what would be the next step? Asking this now just to get it out of the way quicker, if I find the card does support it. |

No PrimeGrid work units received
(Message 54342)
Posted 5 Jun 2014 by ![]() Post: Not sure why. GPU is reported as CAL ATI Radeon HD 4350/4550 (R710) (512MB) driver: 1.4.1734, and the event log recognises the GPU, so it's not saying 'no usable GPUs found' or anything. The PrimeGrid entries just say that 0 work units were received. Causes? I've already checked PrimeGrid's computing preferences, so no issues there. EDIT: Oops, forgot the OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Core N x64 Edition, (06.03.9600.00) |

Posted 3 May 2014 by ![]() Post: After downgrading to Ubuntu 13.04, I find that I receive no work units at all now, even though the GPU is being detected (still need to restart it via init.d to get that to work). However, I don't know if this lack of GPU units is a problem with myself only, since someone on my team is experiencing similar issues. I've checked his event log via teamviewer, and his GPU is also being detected, but receiving no work, despite the project preferences allowing GPU work. Is there a larger problem here that's BOINC related, or is it just a coincidence? |

Posted 1 May 2014 by ![]() Post: I've tried a method that has been posted several times on different BOINC-related forums, where I would open /etc/init.d/boinc-client with a text editor, and add sleep 5 to the line after 'else' under the start() function. I tried it with a 15 second delay, and still nothing. |

Posted 1 May 2014 by ![]() Post: I was wondering why neither GPUGRID, nor PrimeGrid were downloading any work units, until I opened up the event log to find this in one of my first few lines. This computer is using an AMD A6-6400K, so it should be compatible. I'm also using the proprietary drivers, and there is no dedicated video card, so this isn't some issue with needing a dummy plug or anything. What should I do? EDIT: If I restart boinc, but not the computer, the GPU is found, and everything works normally after that. Looks like something during bootup is causing this issue. |

Posted 11 Apr 2014 by ![]() Post: OS: Lubuntu 32bit boinccmd commands return "Can't connect to local host", and the GUI BOINC Manager tries connecting for a bit, then gives up and shows Disconnected in the bottom right corner. Cause? Solution? No gui_rpc_auth.cfg exists anywhere except in my trash. apt-get removing boinc, client, and manager, then reinstalling BOINC made no difference. |

Where would I find files for parsing stats?
(Message 53558)
Posted 9 Apr 2014 by ![]() Post: I'm not particularly worried about limiting it to WUProp users. Since its a non intensive project that can help others, I feel like it's a good incentive for people in my relatively small community to run it, if they want to display stats with an appearance that suits them. You mention accuracy as being a potential issue. What's the specific issue with going down this road? I'm motivated partly due to its simplicity, given that even the methods that dedicated third-party stat sites use have flaws, and that the difference may not be worth the added effort and complexity needed to get my stats working the way their stats do. As for the calculations, i could either use cron to solve that, or just go ahead and save every single user that has used the images at some point or another, since there's always going to be at least one person per day loading one of those images via a page load on my site. I've already got a similar system set up for my team's stats across the distributed computing world, so I could just adapt that for usage with multiple users. I've also got stats for Folding@Home in exactly the same way I do for what I want to do with BOINC, so I could combine elements from both (ie, the multiple project stat gathering from the former, with the multiple user functionality of the latter). |

Where would I find files for parsing stats?
(Message 53553)
Posted 8 Apr 2014 by ![]() Post: Back again! I abandoned this idea due to its complexity, but I was looking through some of my account information on a few of my projects and had another idea. Instead of going through the stat files (as well as downloading them, which I'm sure are large), I could parse a project page based on a user's id number which is used as an input for my parser through a GET variable in the image URL. So for instance, if I have a bunch of users doing this: site.com/image.png?id=1 site.com/image.png?id=2 site.com/image.png?id=3 site.com/image.png?id=4 I could then code it so that when the image is requested, it searches the user account page for a user on a project common to all, which would contain all the information I would need, from the name of the user, to how many points they have in total, plus many more things. If I were to use WUProp, it would be easy to set up for users, and it's not intensive, so there's not really a downside to adding it for those who want some stats. Using myself as an example: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/show_user.php?userid=6076 My ID would be 6076, so I would have a stat banner looking like: site.com/image.png?id=6076 I can then get all the data required for this particular ID and save it to a file on my server, so that data per user is requested no more than once a day (assuming that image is requested in a page load on that day), since obviously I wouldn't want to flood WUProp with requests. Then I can keep an old file as well to perform calculations like how many points were obtained over the past day, and I've got myself all the important stats I need. This should work, right? Any problems you folks see in this that I don't? |

Using HD4000 alongside dedicated GPU: Possible to use it exclusively for a project?
(Message 53046)
Posted 7 Mar 2014 by ![]() Post: Only Ivy Bridge type CPUs and upwards from there have OpenCL support on the built-in GPU, yours is a Sandy Bridge which does not have OpenCL support. Only HD Graphics 2500 and 4xx0 do so far. The 2000 and 3000 are both earlier and do not do OpenCL, only video. Damn. Guess I'll remove the project, then. I assume there's absolutely nothing I can do with this GPU, then? |

Using HD4000 alongside dedicated GPU: Possible to use it exclusively for a project?
(Message 53041)
Posted 7 Mar 2014 by ![]() Post: The solution is to extend the desktop onto the HD4000 (you can try a monitor or a dummy plug, but some have said that is not always 100% reliable), Nothing happens when I click the detect button. I have three monitors all connected to my video card, but my motherboard does not have a display port of any kind on it. To stop Boinc asking for work for the Nvidia GPU at Collatz go into the Collatz project preferences and Deselect 'Use Nvidia GPU', do a project update (with NNT already set), after that Boinc won't ask for Nvidia work. Done. I'm guessing since I have an issue with the first part of this, it explains why I'm not receiving any work units at the moment. If I remember correctly, you need to modify something in the config files to actually get it to work. |

Using HD4000 alongside dedicated GPU: Possible to use it exclusively for a project?
(Message 53033)
Posted 7 Mar 2014 by ![]() Post: Couple of questions. First off, how do you enable the usage of the integrated Intel GPU when you already have a dedicated GPU, and secondly, is it possible to assign the iGPU to only one project? For example, my GTX 770 is currently working on GPUGRID, and Collatz is one of three projects that support the Intel GPU. I don't want Collatz to use my 770, since the iGPU can't run on GPUGRID. Hopefully that makes sense. |
