Dunno. Try it.

I'm here just helping you help yourselves.

Juha - if it doesn't work, how do I undo it?
Usually when I try new things that don't work, I end up having to reinstall LM.

nvidia-modprobe is in trusty-backports. Either enable backports in Software sources or download the package from here or here. (Mint 17 = Ubuntu 14.04)

This bug report suggest it would (have) fix(ed) 331 drivers too.

Juha - would this fix work for my problem?

Update:

I found ...
http://askubuntu.com/questions/149206/how-to-install-nvidia-run

Implemented ...
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Driver Manager identifies nvidia-304

I rebooted, but still no GPU recognition at einstein.phys.uwm.edu

Thanks Jord, but I think your data in your posting needs to be updated.
I tried to follow it, but some tabs are not there as identified.
I don't know enough to make jumps in logic to determine the appropriate course to follow. Your posting is four years old.

I am trying to download WUs into LinuxMint 17.1 Cinnamon 64-bit with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU.
None of the Projects recognize the NVIDIA GPU.

Everything I have tried resulted in reinstalling LM. Since I am not a Linux Guru, I can use any help that is available.

I tried:
sudo service boinc-client restart

but this code has not helped initiating a WU download.

The Driver Manager reports xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed.

Thanks for the assist.

My BOINC Manager reports ...

Collatz Conjecture: Notice from BOINC
missing in app_config.xml
2/17/2015 2:57:25 AM

but it doesn't say what is missing.

Here is the file...

<app_config>
<app>
<name>solo_collatz</name>
<max_concurrent>99</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.25</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.10</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

Please advise how the file should read.

Thank you

I wonder when Boinc will update their Manager in the distro packages?
I can't use the app_config file in the current package.

OK, guys. I got fed up and put two NV GPUs in the Linux PC.
At least it's working now.

Thanks for the support.

I'll look into this "Backports" idea. Thanks

http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/hosts_user.php
Installed the Backports package. Collatz still doesn't see my GPUs.
The AMD package under BOINC still gives me a RED square. Not good.

it is doing the same as putting a delay in the boinc client start up.

Yea. I don't like it, but it works. It still doesn't get my ATI GPUs to work with LinuxMint.

would this be a case of having to delay the start up of the boinc client for x amount of time to let all the drivers get loaded.

I have found the Linux reboots require...
sudo service boinc-client restart

at startup to get the GPUs working. This is not ATI specific. NV GPUs require it also.

Edit: No good with LinuxMint.

Tried this Win7 AMD driver via WINE. No joy.

Anyone have a better idea?

Which Distro? There are dozens of them, Ubuntu, Debian, etc,
Where did you get Boinc from? Berkeley? or from that Distro's repository?
Does that distro have an AMD package for Boinc?
Claggy

I have LinuxMint 64bit Cinnamon, if that is what you need.
I installed BOINC via Synaptic Package Manager.
When I select boinc-amd-opencl for install, I get a RED square.

Hope that helps you help me.

Edit: All my ATI GPU are 7770.
Should I install an ATI driver using WINE?

Do you have any specific host and project in mind?

They all have the same issue. They recognize the Linux OS (Linux 3.5.0-17-generic), but not the ATI GPU. ATI website cannot/doesnot scan Linux for the best driver. However, Linux and NVIDIA do work together.

I will look into that idea and post what I find. Thanks for the suggestion.

Why can Win7 and ATI GPU WUs work, but Linux and ATI GPU WUs not?
Projects reportedly can not see ATI GPUs, if the OS is Linux.

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration#Application_configuration

According to this link referring to the app_config.xml file,
This mechanism allows you to specify scheduling parameters associated with specific applications or app versions. It is available with 7.0.40+ client versions.

I have a LinuxMint 14 DE: Cinnamon with AMD GPUs. I downloaded the BOINC Manager 7.0.27 (x86) via the Package Manager. Why isn't version 7.0.40 available via the Package Manager?

I think this is the reason Collatz Conjecture project can not see my GPUs. Can Boinc get the 7.0.40 version available via apt-get or the Package Manager, please?
40) Message boards : Questions and problems : "Results returned" and "Total Run Time"
Message 48860
Posted 29 Apr 2013 by ProfileGandalf_the_Grey
Well, I do have some questions on that:
1. What do you want done with the results already previously run?

2. You do know that BOINC did away with those things and came up with the credit system, due to the 'tasks run' being incompatible between projects? (You can't compare a Seti task with a CPDN model, for instance)

3. You do also know that this isn't just a decision the BOINC developers can make, but that projects have to be in it as well, as they do not count any such statistics at the moment, and therefore should make changes to their database(s) (something some projects will not like doing, as adding a column for several hundreds of thousands of computers adds to overhead) to be able to do so?

I have forwarded your question to David Anderson.

1. I think my last post showed a link that shows how the Total Credits are presented. The Results Received will be presented in following columns along with their Total Run Time data.

2. Since my intent is not to compare one Project's data with another, Apples are Apples and Oranges or Oranges.

3. Since WCG is presenting this data for it's Team members, I can assume that this idea is technically doable. As for the acceptance of Projects to agree with collecting and Exporting the data, I can only push this idea up hill so far. Eventually, one has to reach the top of any hill, then gravity and the foresight of good men must take over.

I trust I have answered your questions.

Gandalf

P.S. - A truism comes to mind. "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." I am not attempting to present this idea for personal gain other than knowing that it might deliver some satisfaction to my fellow crunchers. The knowledge that my 22,000 Results Returned this week might just provide a cure. Come to think of it, yes, I do have a personal gain.
