Thank you Keith.

There are only two files in my HOME---> BOINC folder, and they're both text files.

stderrgui.txt and stdoutgui.txt

One of which is appears to be an error log mostly full of this message:
Gtk-CRITICAL **: 09:30:07.968: gtk_box_gadget_distribute: assertion 'size >= 0' failed in GtkScrollbar

Just in case there was a hidden file or something, I tried running the client from the terminal by opening the terminal from that directory.
bash: ./run_client: No such file or directory

I assume the package installer put my copy of BOINC somewhere else? Like I posted, I'm using default package installers or installing from the Terminal, and have not manually installed the program somewhere weird.

Thank you for the link; unfortunately one is eleven years out of date (for Ubuntu '09) and the other is for Mac. But yes, I've been to the BOINC wiki.
This is not a problem with installing on Linux, in that the program was successfully installed and contributing 32 threads to World Community Grid.
Then I updated the machine. BOINC should not self destruct just by updating the machine.

Thanks to everybody for their help so far.

Here's what I get for Sudo lsof -i:

sudo lsof -i:31416
[sudo] password for ******:
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
boinc 1912 boinc 7u IPv4 73991 0t0 TCP *:31416 (LISTEN)

Removing the password and replacing it with a blank document crated a freakout in the Terminal, with the following message posted about one a second for fifteen seconds:
gui_rpc_auth.cfg is empty - no GUI RPC password protection.
I'll see if that helps after a restart.

I have no idea how to start BOINC in another terminal session from the boinc directory, or what it means. I appreciate the step by step instructions earlier but I got totally lost here.
My BOINC folder is only displaying two items, both text files. As I said before, deleting every file named BOINC wasn't enough to stop the old process or properly let me start anew.

When I run the BOINC manager from my desktop, and everything is disconnected, the "show log" button is greyed out entirely.

Hi everybody, I'm currently running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, BOINC client and manager version 7.16.6.

Immediately after updating Ubuntu in 2018, my Manager started showing a "disconnected" message.
Tasks would still complete, but only the System Monitor 'CPU resources used' showed any evidence that I was running tasks at all.
They don't appear in any folder I see or in the "Running Processes" list.

I've tried just about everything I could think of to get it running again, and nothing's worked.
Worse still, whenever I try to manually make any changes in the Terminal, I get "Authorization failure: -155" instead.

At this point I really, REALLY want to change my BOINC settings.
I'm having problems that could easily be solved with a working Manager, and the longer they continue, the more irritating it gets.
In particular I can't play as much as Youtube video because GPU tasks can't be paused (or run at a lower priority), and I can't throttle my GPU tasks to stay within my electrical budget. My electrical utility has tiers and has very harsh punishments users for surpassing them (~$150 USD fine).

Here's what I've tried so far:
Waiting for each Ubuntu release in hopes it reverts back to normal.
Keeping the computer offline long enough for all tasks to be late, then deleting every file I could find affiliated with BOINC.
(That didn't stop late tasks from crunching.)
Uninstalling client/manager from the command line. Then reinstalling them from the command line.
Then when that didn't work I uninstalled it and reinstalled from the GUI package manager.
Opening all ports and turning off the firewall.
Leaving the firewall on and opening just the BOINC ports to all network traffic.
Telling the manager to connect to a computer, and then putting my computer's name and password into the prompt.

If it helps, when type "boinc" into the terminal, the text ends with the following error,
[---] GUI RPC bind to port 31416 failed: 98
gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180

Any help you can provide is highly appreciated.
I am a novice with Ubuntu and only run it because some BOINC tasks run faster on it.
So step by step instructions would be highly appreciated.

I prefer biomedical work units, and have switched my phones over to the 'Dreamlab' app.
They're doing cancer and drug discovery work units.

It's not even letting me register for tasks - the CAPCHA doesn't load during registration.

Maybe they're not ready for anybody's help yet?

Yes, desktop shortcut has been boincmgr all along.
The 'Ubuntu Software' store DOES come with a desktop launcher, which is why it was working fine prior to a reboot.

I can't speak for the 'mate' desktop, as I'm running the default desktop that comes with 17.10 (gnome).
I installed and ran BOINCTUI under a terminal. I clicked enter with the default settings it suggested, and it said BOINC wasn't connected to any projects.
This would be a surprise to World Community Grid. Despite the missing GUI, the computer is averaging eight hundred VINA tasks a day.

Didn't work, the shortcut wouldn't open with or without a password attached to the command (needs two dashes, yes?), but out of curiosity I tried typing "boincmgr" into the Terminal instead of "boinccmd".
Up pops a NEW error message.

terreno@terreno:~$ boincmgr
/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/apps/mate-panel.rc:30: error: invalid string constant "murrine-scrollbar", expected valid string constant

It's a confirmed (sorta) bug affecting people running various apps in 17.10, and blocking them from opening various applications.
See this bug report, where the Murrine text appears alongside other errors and the same symptoms.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug/1724078

Am I on the right track? Because editing a non-BOINC, standard system file that I don't recognize (see reply #4 in the link) seems like it could have consequences down the road.

Thank you for your patience,

Dayle

I think we may be honing in on the problem here. I'm not allowed to view gui_rpc_auth.cfg when I try to open it in Text Editor.

Could not open the file “/var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg”.
You do not have the permissions necessary to open the file.

When I try to change permissions, it says "You are not the owner, so you cannot change these permissions".

It does say it was last modified several months before my computer was assembled, and that the size is 1 byte. Not sure how to tell who the owner is, or if/how I lost its contents via restarting my system. As you wrote, it doesn't work with an empty file.

Should I delete this file and hope BOINC creates a new one?

This morning after a reboot, I'd click on BOINC's manager application and it didn't open.
A few more clicks, a few restarts, no fix. It's still running CPU and GPU tasks in the background and is connecting with the network.

I search for the issue and the only post I see with similar symptoms is this guy:
https://www.reddit.com/r/BOINC/comments/5tmbu0/boinc_manager_wont_open_ubuntu_1604/

His system crashed, causing the problem. Whereas I'm manually clicking on the power controls in the upper right hand corner and selecting Power Off (presumably that's what we're all supposed to do).

Advise was either find "a lock file somewhere" or else wipe the machine and try again.

After purging BOINC and its config files, reinstalling, rebooting all failed to work, I wiped the machine. Reinstalled ONLY Graphics Drivers+Gnome tweaks, VLC Player, and BOINC. Nothing else custom.

Powered off the PC and moved it on a shelf to prepare for a headless setup.
And the problem comes right back.

Still can't open the manager.
I can't function for long in terminal-only mode - I've assembled this computer for my relatives, and they expect a GUI so they can see their contributions to science.

Thanks in advance,

Dayle

I'm running:
Ubuntu 17.10

World Community Grid is down!

Projects aren't uploading, and the main site displays the following message on every page:

At this point I can at least confirm that it is no longer associated with the University College of Dublin, and that the antimalarial drug discovery is finished and the work is already published. So the Project Description is highly misleading!

As the guy ranked 10th in the USA for this project, I recommend WAITING and using caution.
It looks like the original team for Fight Malaria at Home sold it to GridRepublic (which is for-profit and only allows subscribers to run charity work when all for-profit work is completed). In particular, that means that we could be giving free research to the pharmaceutical industry which they can use to overcharge people in the future.

Months ago we were told that GridRepublic would be providing server space, but at this point it looks like our contributions are their profit, and that they'll point to our contributions and say that they, GR, are charitable.

A few posters, including myself have asked direct questions on the forms, and we have not yet gotten a direct answer.

Not sure if this is a project specific issue, but my GPUGrid tasks vary in complexity, content, and run time. They're all clocking in at an estimated 5,000,000 GFLOPS.

Does BOINC calculate this locally, with a maximum for estimating project size, or does each project's administrator type it somewhere manually?

Find Neglected Diseases is down.
WU aren't uploading, accounts and forums are down, and there's error messages all over the website.
