Thanx! It seems to be running right at the moment, but if it goes bad, I'll nuke it, install the old version and turn off the automatic updates. I didn't realize that I could do that. Live and learn!

Alas, Android "upgraded" BOINC to the non-working version last night. There doesn't seem to be a way to avoid this.

OK, I found out what to do from a post in the World Community Grid forum. First, select a project, any project, and connect to it. Next, go to the Projects screen, tap the three dots in the top right corner and select Connect to a url. Enter the url of the project you want to connect to (including http:// or https:// as appropriate) and let it connect. Sign in or register. Lather, rinse, repeat as often as needed, then remove the dummy project if you're not interested in it. Not exactly obvious or intuitive, but so it goes.

I tried uninstalling the current version, and that let me install the older one. Alas, it only includes two projects, neither of them being the two I want, and there's no way to specify anything else. Updating to a newer version through the Play Store gets me two different projects, but again, not the ones I want. I'm uninstalling it from my phone, as it's a waste of space right now, but am keeping it on my desktop, running Fedora 25. If I can get the program to accept the two projects I want, the World Community Grid and Einstein@home, I'll put it back on and let it do it's thing while I'm charging it.

For a lot of people however, going back to 7.4.43 fixes most problems: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.43.apk
(Can be installed by temporarily allowing Install from Unknown Sources from Settings ->Security)

I've downloaded the file and made the change to my Security Settings, but when I tap the file in Downloads, I'm simply told that the file can't be opened. Now what?

Aha! That's what's wrong! For quite some time, now, I've been noticing that if I leave my phone unattended on the charger, BOINC will be suspended when I next check, but tapping the plug on the USB cable fixes it. Now, it's stopped responding to the point where the program doesn't even open from the main menu. I even tried force-quitting, and when that didn't work, restarted my phone with no change.

I have an LG Tribute 5 phone with Android 5.5.1 if that helps. I'll try downgrading to that version mentioned in another post and report back later. Thanx!

Group changes take effect after the next login. Did you restart after making the changes?

This is Linux we're talking about, ChristianB, not Windows. You don't need to restart to make changes like this take effect, just log out and back in again. Just thought I'd mention it.

I'm not saying that this is a bug, or that BOINC should do anything about it. It is, however, a workaround, and the only one I could find that works. I think that I even tried running boincmgr in the same directory as the key and it failed. If you have a safer method, please tell me and I'll post it at the fedoraforum as an addition to that thread.

And, btw, I didn't mention Fedora in the thread's title because I didn't think (and still don't) that either the issue or the workaround was distro-specific. I'll not change it back, but I did want to comment.

Edit:

On further thought, it's trivially easy to remove even read access for all but you and members of your group after you've got BOINC running and that would make sure that other users of that box, if any, wouldn't be able to access it.

Really? How? It's not like it's disabling SELinux, or running the program as root. If there's a security issue, please explain.

I got it! As I use Fedora, I did a search on the Fedora Forum and found this: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=313161&highlight=BOINC As I ran boincmgr from ~/.boinc I didn't need to enter the password, it just came right up! Hope this helps others trying to get reconnected.

Something else that may be significant is that when I have boincmgr open, I keep getting notices that the client has restarted 3 times in the last two minutes. As I'm only using 845MB out of 8GB, memory isn't an issue.

I just had to do a clean installation of Fedora 25, and I've installed BOINC, version 7.6.22 (X64). I'm trying to connect to my machine so that I can add projects, but can't. This isn't unusual for me, either, because every time I have to install BOINC I go through the same problem. Alas, I haven't had to do it for several years, so I don't remember the magic incantation. Please help, as I've been a member for years and want to keep contributing.

No matter what I do, Boincmgr can't connect to localhost. However, checking at Einstein@home shows recent results, and if I use top, I can see that boinc-client is not only active, but one of my two projects (The other is the WCG.) is running. And, it shows current activities and claims down at the bottom that it's connected. Weird.

I'm running Fedora 17 with Xfce, in case that matters. Recently, I had to re-install Linux after something mangled my OS. I've reinstalled both boinc-client and the manager, and the client starts at boot. However, even after adding myself to the boinc group logging out and back in again, I can't connect to localhost with the manager. Not only that, I have to reconnect to the projects and download new work every time I boot. (Normally, I only reboot for kernel updates, but things aren't exactly normal for me right now.) I have a link to /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg in my home directory, and I've tried using the appropriate password, but it never connects. What's the next step?
