Boinc Issues connecting to host.... What a headache that gave me. This is what I found, I hope this helps you guys. Please note however that I am not a Tech in any sense of the word. Applies to Windows VISTA (all flavors), Windows 7 (all flavors). I don't know if it applies to any other flavors since I don't use them and haven't bothered to look them up. Cause of issues..... AntiVirus -> sometimes reports a false positive because of next item... The 1 time I got this, I excluded BOINC as a trusted App. Firewall -> Boinc will sometimes be blocked. I don't know why it is not consistent, but hey, I chalk it up to MISCROSOFT.... :) If I get this problem, I specify boinc as allowed in the settings. Permissions -> The way Windows is now set up is with UAC (User Account Controle) for security against users doing something by mistake or through plain stupidity. To get around this in the HOME flavors of Windows which have no real policy editors you do the following..... Log in as administrator. Make sure to exit boinc before going further if is loads automatically. Click START button and type CMD in search. Right click the CMD.exe that appears in the results to run as administrator (I know you are already logged in as admin. but do it anyways, otherwise you may get error 5 when you enter the commands in the window. in the following commands substitute USERNAME for the name of the account you wish to authorize to use and administer the BOINC software. Personal opinion is that theses 2 commands go against the idea of UAC, but who am I to question it... net localgroup boinc_users username /add net localgroup boinc_admins username /add Reboot the machine to make sure everything is good. This worked for me and I now have 2 computers crunching away. 1st computer is a WIN7 64 bit on AMD 8core, the 2nd is a VISTA 32 bit on intel DUO. All this info was looked up and in many if not all cases repeated in the different project forums and discussion boards because many people have the same problem. I suggest you look it up yourselves to make absolutely sure this solution applies to you. All projects have forums and discussion groups filled with people who are knowledgeable and willing to help. So good luck folks. Happy crunching. |
