Does anyone out there in BOINC land have any experience using Charity Engine concurrently with BOINC? I'm not interested in their prizes but they seem to be connected to some interesting projects.

For example:

Hmmmmm. Well, that's annoying.

Okay. Then is there a way to limit the number of tries a projects gets to contact it's host before it stops trying?

For example, a projects attempts to contact it's host once every 24 hours, apparently forever.

Is there a way to limit the attempts to some number?

I sort of vaguely remember an option to terminate a specific project's communication request. I think it was on the Options tab, but I can't find it.

Is there a way to terminate a communication request, or am I crazy?

BOINC 7.14.2
Windows 7
any project
BOINC was installed however it wanted to. Don't think it is a service.

Is there a way to limit the number of downloads from a given project using the BOINC command line? Some projects now have an option to limit the number of tasks downloaded but many don't. As a result, the better-behaved projects send a limited number of tasks while others - generally the older projects - download up to some limit.

Is there a way - or is it even possible - to change the Resource Share for a single project on a specific computer?

Perhaps through the appl_config file?

I updated BOINC to 7.6.33 on all 3 of my machines. Absolutely no problems on two of them - one Win 7 Home and one Win 10 Pro.

The third - Win 10 Pro - has had issues. I've figured out solutions to most of them except the Statistics scale. It isn't resetting as more credits are earned and I can't figure out what to look for. I've reinstalled 7.6.33 twice and even upgraded to VB 5.1.12.

Any suggestions on where to look?
10) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC 7.6.22 doesn't start from Win7 taskbar (Message 68558)

Post:
Hello, Ageless... long time, no problems.

First, a little background. As a general rule, I never modify an installation process. However a program - including BOINC - wants to install itself is okay by me.

Yes, BOINC is running in the background just as it installed itself. I prefer to put an icon on the taskbar to make the manager easier to open - as opposed to start - to do whatever needs doing.

In previous iterations, clicking on the taskbar icon would re-open the manager. Now, after installing 7.6.22, the icon I've placed on the taskbar doesn't open the manager. It gets brighter for a second or two while the little circle spins, then nothing. I suspect it is trying to start BOINC as opposed to simply opening the manager but when it finds BOINC already running, it just goes back to sleep.

The icon works fine on my third machine, by the way, just as it did on the other two pre-7.6.22 installs.

This whole thing simply screams "PERMISSIONS" to me, but I just don't know for sure.

I get that in the wide sweep of geopolitical events this isn't a big deal, but I do have a concern. if this version has an issue taking input from an icon on the taskbar, does it perhaps have other, more critical issues?

As always, thanks for your help. You do good work.

didn't have the problem with the previous versions, nor do I have the problem on my win7 home machine running boinc 7.2.42.

"why move your projects from one pc to another?... easier to let the xp one finish what it has and then hit no new task for all projects..."

Yeah, this is how I'm leaning. My XP stuff is almost finished - best to let it all finish up in peace.

"is the new hp 32 bit or 64 bit?"

64-bit.

thanks for the thoughts.

My lovely wife, bless her heart, bought me a new HP desktop "just because"! It has Vista, of course, and I am contemplating moving my project stuff from my XP machine to this one. Right now, I have a completely fresh OS with nothing set up except Outlook. Does anyone have any words of wisdom about how I would best go about putting my projects back on this machine? Obviously, I would prefer to avoid the problems so many others seem to have had, and would be completely happy simply starting from scratch on my new machine and leaving my previous stuff on my other box.

Has the DNS behaviour that seems to be the cause of this been fixed in 6.2? (It's in the database as http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/113 -- the item has been "modified" a couple of times in the last couple of months, but I haven't seen any changes in the item.)

No. I very recently upgraded to 6.2.16 and the error still exists.

Funny thing is, I wasn't receiving this error at all UNTIL version 6.2.16. I had never even seen this situation, either on my old dial-up connection OR with my current broadband connection.

I posted a message to the CPDN board and received the "mostly benign" answer.

19) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Why two IE sessions? (Message 17256)

Which BOINC version?

I thought this bug was stamped out a long time ago, so if you're not using at least a 5.10 version, then consider to upgrade.

Ah and which Internet Explorer version on which Windows?

BOINC - 5.10.45, which I am given to understand is the latest version for Windows. I have, by the way, faithfully updated to every production release of BOINC since at least 4.05... 17 update versions by my count.

IE = 6.0.2900.5512, which is to say version 6 with SP3 (yes, "3").

Windows/XP with SP3. I installed the official Microsoft version of SP3 yesterday (5/7/08), but this business of two IE sessions has been going on for quite some time... prior to updating to 5.10.45, if memory serves.
