1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Zero Share grabbed job before a One Share project

I am running Seti Beta (0 weight), PrimeGrid (100 weight), and CSG (10000 weight). When it came time to fetch new work, Boinc grabbed a Seti task rather than a PG task. This occurred when I pausing a CSG task (Seti and PG had no paused tasks) in order to grab a PG task for an empty thread. The client is Boinc 7.4.42.

This is the first time I ever saw Boinc grab a task for a 0 weighted project over a 1+ weighted project. I have always worked under the assumption that 0 weighted tasks are only fetched if there were any idle threads and after requesting tasks from any projects weighted 1 or above. Yes I had one thread free so getting a Seti task was not out of bounds.

And I checked the properties and the scheduling was -1000.00 for the Seti and -1069.58 for the PG. So yes the priority is seemingly for the Seti project. However, in other versions of Boinc (7.2.42 for example) even 1 weight projects with priorities as low as -30000.00 send get requests before the 0 weight/-10000.00 projects. Also I checked that there was no work fetch deferral for PG.

So I am confused as to why there was no request to get tasks from PG prior to the Seti request.

Saw it happen on one of my computers a few months ago. WCG, in fact. It was the first set of runs for (I believe) the Ebola project when the tasks were estimated around a day, with a 3 day deadline for resends, on my slow computer that took up to 5 or 6 days to run. Only one or two were canceled due to not starting in time. It is no longer an issue, but remains one of my pet peeves against the "3-day resend" deadlines.

There is also Volpex, which sometimes (rarely) delivers WUs after the deadline. But then again, they have a 5 minute deadline.

In any case it is most likely to happen when a project sends WUs with deadlines that are shorter than the length of the cache.

I am now getting messages saying "| PUCBi Desktop Grid | Invalid or missing account key. To fix, detach and reattach to this project."

Tried logging onto my account and it is now saying I have no account. Anyone know what is going on?

The Server Status page says that the upload/download server is disabled. I doubt anyone would be able to get any tasks or report completed ones anyway.

Actually I have never seen the upload/download server not disabled. In any case that hasn't stopped the flow of work in the past nor now.
Active users: http://boinc.fiit.stuba.sk/top_users.php There are a few who are still crunching.

Has anyone had any luck contacting the admins? The forums are still AWOL and flooded with spam accounts.

I also wonder about the rational for using distributed computing when well over 50% of the work is being done by a single user.

Apparently the new server starts everything from scratch, or is there a plan to transfer the previous credits over?

Well my four tasks died after a rare power outage...2900+ hours lost. WUProp also died so no end of file reported to WUProp and therefore no WUProp hours.

I am going to avoid this project for a while in hope that the deadline is changed from a mere two weeks to at least two months. Not going to cross my fingers...

Has anyone had better luck with this project than me?
24hr deadline, each WU requires almost 2Gigs of virtual memory, efficiency at around 75-80% (concurrent WUs from other projects do a lot better: 90-100%), and the kicker is the credits at 30-50% of what I get from SETI.

Not having a message board isn't doing it any favors either.

I have 4 tasks all overdue ranging from 279 to 426 hours. I am letting them run as I have not seen anything to suggest that these are errors. I have seen WUs running over 500 hours still get credits.

As for the message boards, I think it is due to the thousand or so spammers that have joined. It is possible to go directly to threads that you have posted in, just not any of the indexes.
10) Message boards : Projects : Collatz Conjecture Credit

Collatz
DistrRTgen
GPUGrid
POEM
PrimeGrid

all have high credit GPU apps...not just Collatz

The commonality is in their use of the GPU that people have attached to their computers. All of these projects have optimized apps for the GPU and are running at high utilization. Other projects, on the other hand, often have not optimized their apps for the GPU. Even within a project there can be optimized and unoptimized GPU apps. There are also cr/effort differences between OSes as well as between ATI and Nvidia. [TMI... the floating point precision makes a difference for some projects.]

Furthermore, GPUs have a far greater number of cores to work with than CPUs. So GPU WUs and CPU WUs are not really comparable. In my case my GPU (GTX 660Ti) has 1344 cores. So while my CPU WU is processing a single operation, my GPU WU can be processing up to 1344 operations.

But going back to the OP, you only stated the CPU time not run time which, usually, is more important for GPU WUs. This is because most GPU apps use very little CPU processing. [If only BOINC would also list GPU time.]

Mid credit GPU projects include:
Albert
Einstein
Milkyway
Moo! Wrapper

Low credit GPU projects...
SETI
Seti Beta
You might as well run the cpu apps as SETI is either so unoptimized or their credit system is so messed up that they value a GPU at a fraction of its potential.

So branch out and test the other projects and see what they are like. I feel sorry for all those that join SETI and never venture further into the Boincverse.

Thanks Claggy!

Extending the desktop onto the HD4000 did the trick. I can now sleep in on a Sunday...until the football starts, that is.

Sorry I didn't say which Boinc, but yes I am running 7.2.8.

Since this was a new build computer (just last month) I thought my HD 4000 drivers were up-to-date. Apparently not...Now it is up-to-date! Unfortunately, it didn't help.

I think my problem is lack of a dummy plug. Since it wasn't a dedicated GPU, the thought of a dummy plug slipped past unnoticed. My monitor is hooked to my 660ti, so chances are this is the problem. I am heading to Radio Shack in the morning for the parts to make a dummy plug.

I am having trouble getting the IntelGPU WUs.

I am trying to run this on my i7-3770K and have set my preferences to only accept the Intel app from the Seti Beta project. I am also running PrimeGrid/CPDN on my cpu cores and Collatz on my Nvidia 660Ti.

The IntelGPU shows up during the start up of Boinc:
11/9/2013 6:55:47 PM | | CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 660 Ti (driver version 327.23, CUDA version 5.5, compute capability 3.0, 2048MB, 1916MB available, 2810 GFLOPS peak)
11/9/2013 6:55:47 PM | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 660 Ti (driver version 327.23, device version OpenCL 1.1 CUDA, 2048MB, 1916MB available, 2810 GFLOPS peak)
11/9/2013 6:55:47 PM | | OpenCL CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (OpenCL driver vendor: Intel(R) Corporation, driver version 1.1, device version OpenCL 1.1 (Build 37149.37214))
11/9/2013 6:55:47 PM | | NVIDIA library reports 1 GPU

And I have set to use all coprocessors and to ues the debug:
11/9/2013 6:42:41 PM | | Re-reading cc_config.xml
11/9/2013 6:42:41 PM | | Not using a proxy
11/9/2013 6:42:41 PM | | Config: use all coprocessors
11/9/2013 6:42:41 PM | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task, coproc_debug

Is there something else I missed and/or need to check to get IntelGPU apps running.

And one more question...
Is there a way I can stop WCG from being my de facto global prefs. I detached WCG from my main computer and deleted my global prefs file. Yet it still pops back up.

They don't separate project prefs from global prefs. It seems I wanted to make a change to which apps of theirs I wanted to run now I am stuck with them always resetting my global prefs.

Thanks for the reply Jord.
Yes, 99999 is more than enough.

I agree that switching due to deadlines is good. And you are right priority switching needs to be done to avoid chaos.

I am not trying to change the scheduler per se. However, merely switching apps...in the middle of a run...just because the scheduler feels that things need to be balanced is something that, I believe, is not needed. Rather the scheduler could just as easily be "balance" switching at the end of runs.

Others, may want the switching, I do not. I am just trying to find out if there is a way to minimize switching in the middle of WUs.

. . .

Just an observation...
Yes, I can change the "override" for each individual computer (and have done so: 20000min), but the "global prefs" setup via the project websites won't accept large values (or 0) for the switch between applications field. Thus when I go to change other values, it won't accept them because the switch between applications field has an "invalid" value.

Is there a way to disable or set to infinity the "switch between Apps every X minutes"?

I prefer that WUs run to completion and then switch to another app/project.

I don't like the overhead of swapping data in and out of memory; having a long task swap out minutes from finishing only to be ignored because of the many other projects now having priority; the poor project based global settings that won't let me enter a large number (what is wrong with 20000 min between switching?) or zero, etc....

Many of the prefs use 0 to represent unlimited/100%, why not this field?
Is there a cc_config setting or something I could set?

Checkpointed at 16.5 hours (4%) and at 24 hours (6%)...

I might as well be running CPDN and get the trickle credit.

Edit: checking the list of users, so far not a single WU completed and validated and gave out credit (since restart of the project).

I am currently running the cleanmobility app. With an i5-2410M it seems like it will take forever... initial estimate of 75 hours, after 13.5 hours it has processed only 2%!!! And so far it has checkpointed only once, at 9 hours.

I am wondering if I should just abort this WU. The server status processing times: 5.20 [ave] (0.24 - 23.59) [min-max].

I don't like the fact that their forums are not up an running and that their main page is just a feeder for joining.

Edit: opening up the task manager the app shows up as using over 50% of my cpu then quickly goes down to 25%...hmmmm. I am running BOINC at 75% to give Bitcoin Utopia some breathing room. Why is this app trying to use it?
