21) Message boards : Questions and problems : Is there any way to restrict a certain project to run on GPU, but not CPU? (Message 47303)

The answer is rather simple
Go to your account page for the project you want to restrict and find and press the link next to "preferences for this project"
Find and press the "edit preferences" button / link (it's at the bottom)
Find and uncheck the "Use CPU" option, find and press the "update preferences" button / link (it's at the bottom)
That should do it... I think?

... on balance I think I've given more information here than at cpdn.net but I'll try to reduplicate everything next time...

But actually looking at the logs, the CPDN WU last "exited with zero" at ~11:36 and I think I was actually at the computer that time. So the "extra info" given at CPDN may not even be correct.

1. Make sure you exclude the BOINC directory and all subdirectories (or the BOINC Data directory and all subdirectories in BOINC 6 and 7) from being actively scanned by anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Only scan when you have exited BOINC.

4. Disable Drive Indexing.

Done. (drive indexing disabled for the drive on which BOINC program and data files reside)

3. Don't run Scandisk with BOINC on.

5. Update your motherboard chipset drivers, specifically those for your IDE or SATA controllers.

7. When you use use BOINC's CPU throttling function, you can run into the too many exit(0)s error. The advice here is to disable the BOINC throttling (set it to 100%) and reduce the amount of CPUs/cores for BOINC to use.
** Use at most 100.0 percent of CPU time.
* In BOINC 7.0, this is done through the option On multiprocessors, use at most xxx% of the processors.

3. I only run chkdsk after a system crash. That never happened within this time frame.
5. I'd done that before installing BOINC
7. I'd discovered for myself before that limiting number of cores used (I have 6 available) improved performance much better than throttling did.

2. Don't defrag your disk with BOINC on.

6. Disable the Time synchronization in Windows XP/Vista. Normally found under the clock (double click it in the system tray), third tab (Internet in English), uncheck the sync option.

I'd run into a problem before (stuttering audio when using ASIO) for which the solutions proposed ranged from the pedestrian to the ludicrous, like disabling almost every windows service. Eventually I solved the problem but I don't even know what I did that solved it. I'd disabled almost every startup item and now MSN Messenger wouldn't run.

... these last 2 suggestions sound like extreme measures to me. Defrag is scheduled to run once a week; how do I tell BOINC to stop running while this is happening? And are you telling me that I can't even have the luxury of knowing that my computer clock is accurate if I want to run BOINC reliably? Care to explain how time synchronization relates to this problem?

Anyway, it's been over 24 hours and I haven't had an exit with zero error since the CPDN WU died. I don't know what I changed that solved the problem; I didn't act on (1) and (4) until a few hours ago, and BOINC had been running flawlessly for several hours by then; perhaps CPDN was the cause of the errors, and its WU crashing out "solved" the problem; or perhaps it was this discovery that fixed things: before, when I set the GPU to "run always", the computer would be very unresponsive when I'm at the keyboard, to the extent that sometimes I couldn't even open BOINC manager to stop the GPU for want of the GUI responding for whole minutes at a time. The last error occurred about the time when I applied the TThrottle "fix". I can't be sure whether it was before or after the fix though.

Ageless, I'd upgraded back up to .42 when this happened.

Speaking of heartbeat, here's the stderr from the crashed CPDN WU:

I think climateprediction fell victim to the "100x Task exited with zero status but no 'finished' file" bug :(

I ran through the log (which has the alpha testing debug flags set) and found that I was getting several of these "all tasks exit with zero status but no finished file" bugs today. I think I've found something in common between them. Let me demonstrate--I've captured the events leading up to three instances of all the tasks exiting with zero status but no finished file:

I think what's in common between them is that the scheduler starts and rr_sim runs through time estimations for a crapton of candidate WUs for download, then half a minute later all the tasks error out. I suspect what is happening here is that BOINC is too busy with itself running time estimations to notice the WUs prodding it for attention.

25) Message boards : GPUs : TThrottle as transparent GPU computing solution! (Message 47265)
Posted 15 Jan 2013 by Joe Bloggs
Post:
You can choose to suspend GPU tasks while you're at the computer using BOINC manager but doing so will cause you to lose all work after the last checkpoint.

I just got TThrottle working properly this morning and found a wonderful feature:

Under the Preference tab:
"If the computer is not used for " " seconds<-enter a sensible number here like 180 seconds for 3 minutes
Use these temperatures:
Core " "
Gpu " "

You type your desired maximum temperature for the GPU here, then under the main "Programs" tab, for "Set Gpu" enter a ridiculously low number like "1". TThrottle will now suspend GPU usage whenever you're at the computer--without losing your work like BOINC manager does!

I wonder if Fred can talk to the BOINC team and show them how he does this GPU throttling trick so they can implement this transparent GPU computing that's been on their wishlist...

I've solved my problem with the GPU. Turns out TThrottle wasn't connected to the BOINC client properly. Under the BOINC column when I unchecked and checked "Connect to BOINC client" the "Connected with BOINC client" message shows up and GPU tasks are detected and throttled as advertised in the Programs tab. I don't suppose it'd work to throttle non-BOINC GPU programs in the current config but I'm not fussed about that.... :)

And have you tried suspending the cpu as well as the gpu, or at least setting boinc to use less than the full number of cores?

Post:
If all is running as it should be, the BOINC client itself will place a vanishingly small demand on your GPU - certainly undetectable at your desktop. All the BOINC client does is to start and - crucially for your question - stop a science application supplied by one or other of the projects you are attached to.

If your general preference is "Don't use GPU when computer is in use", then BOINC should detect your usage, and send a message to the science application to

1) stop GPU processing
2) unload itself from GPU memory

There are occasional reports from the Windows world of science applications which fail to notice the 'stop' message, and continue processing when BOINC thinks they are inactive. From what you say about temperatures, it sounds as if your science app has stopped, but maybe it hasn't released the card's video memory? It might be worth discussing your problems with other users of that application on the project's message board.

There's an option in the computing preferences for leaving app data in or out of memory while suspended I wonder what he set it to...

Also he speaks of watching video. If you watch a video and dont touch the keyboard and mouse BOINC will start running again after the preset idle detection time, which is 3 minutes by default but can be set arbitrarily short...

OK, so what do you then mean by 'nothing'?
Else, what science applications do this explicitly?
You have taken into account, etc.?

Have you asked at the projects whose applications do this if this is something they know of, or that others see this as well?

I mean, in Boinc Manager\Statisics they both are flat lined at zero on host total. User total figures are correct on the i7-840. BUt in the i7-920, the only project which shows anything in User total is LHC@home. So, this is definitely whacky.

I have not gone to the projects because all of the projects are running not only on these two machines but two others, and they are both fine. Also, the Statistics show up correctly for both User total and Host total. So, I believe that the problem(s) are mine and not the projects'. Boohoo.

Are you using the advanced view? If you go the the Tasks view what do you see? Maybe all the tasks are having computation errors because of your heat problems?

14/1/2013 9:55:26 | SETI@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

This appears to include ALL the running WUs EXCEPT the GPU WU, a WCG help conquer cancer WU.

The tasks appeared to continue running normally, picking up where they left off, but it sure sounded scary :S

I should note that I had set an ultra-short idle to re-run time of 0.01minute so BOINC may have attempted to restart the GPU task in the short time that it hung. I had wanted to let GPU tasks continue running while the computer is in use but many scary incidents involving near-complete hangups of the computer had dissuaded me. Perhaps a race condition involving the GPU project restarting before it had finished suspending had occurred? I'd set the timer back up to 0.5 minute for now.

May I ask what is the point of making these exclusions? Does one app run better on one gpu model and another app run better on the other model? Is the difference big enough to warrant micromanagement on this scale?

Also version 7.0.4x introduces the new app_config.xml mechanism, by which you can set stuff like number of a particular app to run on one gpu without a full app_info. Perhaps you can try setting the exclusions in that file and see if the results are any different?

Clean driver installs didn't solve it.

How clean? Did you just uninstall the previous drivers and install the next, thinking that's clean? Or did you use something like Driver Sweeper, or Driver Fusion to thoroughly get rid of all old drivers and then install the new ones?

Just copying an OpenCL.dll in other places isn't going to work. It isn't just OpenCL.dll that makes OpenCL work. You'll need to install it with the drivers.

I've had good luck uninstalling as follows:
1. type "change device installation settings" in the windows program search bar
2. choose "no, let me choose what to do"->Never install driver software from Windows Update
3. uninstall graphics driver as usual
4. open device manager, action->scan for hardware changes
5. windows will start installing a driver for your gfx card again. If any old drivers are left over you will end up with your gfx card correctly recognized again under display adapters with its proper name.
6. right click the name display adapter and choose uninstall. In the dialog that pops up check "Delete the driver software for this device" and click ok.
7. Rinse and repeat steps 4-6 to flush out all old drivers for the display card until you get the adapter registered as "generic VGA adapter". (steps 1-2 are crucial for making this happen, otherwise windows will always install drivers from windows update)
8. Now reboot and install whatever driver you want to install.

With this method I've run catalyst 12.10 (latest version) and run BOINC flawlessly.

Thanks Ageless, but I only joined BOINC on 2012-12-30. That Joe Bloggs is not me. I registered as Joe Bloggs on all other BOINC projects but because that name's already taken on WCG I registered as Joe0Bloggs there. As of this moment "Joe0Bloggs" doesn't even show up in a BOINC user search?

lol@platinum records

If I just want records I'd just keep running Collatz Conjecture on my two GPUs. The amount of points I get for multiplying by 3 and dividing by 2 (rinse and repeat) is so high it's totally broken. It's only run for 1 day on the usual even split resource allocation and it's already taken over half of the total "work" I've done since joining.

Still I'd love to contribute to mankind and get some of those platinum records along the way ;) Which is why attaching my WCG account to my usual BOINC account is appealing; seems it should be easy enough. If it's not possible, well, it wouldn't stop me from running it.

edit: Thanks kdsjsdj, I'll ask there if the problem persists. WCG has started showing up under my account at free-dc.org so it's probably sorting itself out.

I wanted to volunteer for "World Community Grid" as "Joe Bloggs" (which is my name for all the other projects I joined) but it asked me to create an account separately and Joe Bloggs was already taken there. Even though WCG is listed as a BOINC project its account system seems to be separate from the others. I haven't got any WUs validated by WCG yet so I don't know if credits they generate would show up under my account, but if I eg go to www.allprojectstats.com I don't see WCG anywhere on the page.

Also what about projects not listed on BOINC at all? Like Folding@home?

3. the HD5670 supports OpenCL, and would download and run OpenCL apps which are generally much more useful. But when the 4250 is detected using the method in (2), none of the cards are detected as OpenCL capable. The apps that were downloaded by the 5670 would show errors like this:
7/1/2013 22:47:15 | | App version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it
7/1/2013 22:47:15 | Poem@Home | Application uses missing ATI GPU

What I meant by the unavoidable bug is the above--that having a non-openCL gpu detected drags down the other gpu to become non-openCL too.

As it is, I have to choose between having one GPU that can take part in stuff like SETI astropulse and POEM folding or two GPUs that can do nothing but this "Collatz conjecture" project. They gained me more credit in a day than I got with my hex core Phenom in a week but just what is it for really??

As for the other question, leaving both GPUs to run when I'm away seems my best bet. I'm not at my computer for that much time in a day and the idle GPU is the weak one anyway.[/quote]

I've got an ATI HD5670 which is a single precision OpenCL capable card, and also an ATI HD4250 (single-precision, that comes with my 880G motherboard. It took me a bit of fiddling about in the bios to enable the 4250, but now BOINC will detect both "cards" when catalyst 11.12 drivers are installed for them. (11.12 seems to be the last stable release that supported the 4250)

Now here's where the fun begins...
1. There's few apps that would run on the HD4250. Only one I've found so far is Collatz Conjecture. But when it runs, it runs almost as fast as the HD5670 even though the log says it only has 124 GFLOPS to the 5670's 1240 GFLOPS!
2. What's even more fun is what I must do to get it working properly. When drivers are installed for the 4250, all WUs sent to it would crash out (computation error). But if I uninstall the 4250 in device manager while BOINC is running, it would start churning out proper WUs even though it shouldn't exist in the eyes of windows anymore! Phantom GPU? Voodoo graphics? :D If I exit and restart BOINC after the uninstall of course the 4250 isn't detected anymore.
3. the HD5670 supports OpenCL, and would download and run OpenCL apps which are generally much more useful.

Is this an unavoidable bug with the current version of BOINC? Or is there something in the config file I can change? FWIW I didn't have to change config_cc.xml (or something like that) for both cards to be detected and run.

4. Finally, is there a setting I can make to have the 4250 running all the time but the 5670 to only run when the computer is "not in use"? If I run the GPUs while the computer is in use the display of course becomes jerky--but only the 5670 is responsible for the actual display!
