They dang well better not make this go on for long or an awful lot of people won't have jobs to go back to.

3-6 months was one estimate I saw, Of course that would need the food distribution network to not succumb, if it does all bets are off !!

When Seti@Home goes away at the end of the month, can we continue to use it as a screen saver?

As the screensaver is a visual representation of the work being processed, I am afraid not. With no work the screensaver will not start.

I was going to ask this in Amicable numbers, but they have a spam filter on their forum, I can't post before I have average credit, catch 22. I can't get credit until I can complete tasks. Doh!

Amicable Numbers have a "getting started" forums where you do not need credit to post.

Main may be up but Beta is down.

Yes and may be for a while
Eric posted

"It's the Friday before a holiday week and the servers know it.

The file system containing the beta project uploads directory is having problems, so beta is down until further notice.

This problem may be affecting the rate at which the main project can handle results, so the validation and assimilation queues are getting large, which may affect the rate of work generation."

Hopefully a new driver comes out soon that fixes this or BOINC updates their software to accommodate the changes from NVIDIA.

It is not BOINC that needs to update, it is SETI@Home apps that have the problem with the Nvidia drivers. Specifically the OpenCL app

If you look here you will see it is a well know problem

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84694

Personally I have dropped OpenCL and am using the CUDA app, no problems so far, except they take much longer to run.

If Nvidia do not feel it is worth updating then SETI@Home will need to update their app.

Boinc does not process the work units that is done by each projects applications.

The problem is the latest Nividia drivers

If you look on the SETI@Home forums you will see the problem is well known

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84694

The quickest fix is to re-install the 431.60 drivers

Risers and cables is a symptom of adding more GPUs on a motherboard than it was designed to use or the OS to manage or the drivers to handle.

The computer I was describing has 2 PCIe 16 slots,on a new motherboard, however there is not really enough space to mount the two cards also it would cause airflow problems, so I use a riser to move it outside.

This machine has had several of these failures.

I have 3 machines with much older motherboards that do not have 2 PCIE16 slots so I am using risers in other PCie slots and they have no problems.

I don't think running two GTX 1060's GPU's on Ubuntu 18.04 on a 4 month old MB with a new Corsiar 650 watt PSU is the problem.

I'd be prepared to place a small bet that this is a hardware problem, not related to the software version (of either BOINC or SETI) in use.

I agree 100% as this has never happened to me on a machine without GPU risers card and cables.

I have one machine running 2 GTX1060's one on a riser and I get this same error about once a week. It always seems to be the card on the riser. First time it was cured by swapping to a "better" riser. It has failed 3 time since and each time it is cleared by shutting down the machine and unplugging/re-plugging the Pcie "USB" type cable.

I have also seen it once one another machine. On that one a new riser and cables seems to have cleared the problem.

I am using Boinc 7.14.2

What user name have you used at SETI,as a quick check shows no users with the name you used here.

Also the Questions and Answers forum at SETI does not require credit to post. This is so new user can ask questions there

Edit, OK I think I have found your SETI@Home account. You have one computer which downloaded 9 tasks about 5 hours ago but has not yet returned any results. Until it does, and those results are validated you will not receive credit.

Grumble - the Amtrak trackside experience. This was truck about 80, of about 145 (didn't count exactly), and it sat there blocking the view up to and above the station roof for a good 10 minutes.

As I said "Remember in the USA, freight goes first(no matter what they say)" That also means it blocks stations and at times level crossings (grade crossings to our colonial friends)

There are several rail cams at crossings and it is often a 100+ car train will totally cut a town in half for hours sometimes, if there is a mechanical problem.

Grumble - I needed to use a KVM so I could control 2 PC's from one keyboard and mouse. Had an old USB one spare, plugged it into both machines, then plugged in a mouse, worked fine, switched between two machines . So then plugged in my keyboard, keys light up for a second then go dark, unplug USB and make sure it is connecting, no joy. OK box doesn't work, put everything back to where it was, then notice keyboard still not lit up, and doesn't work. Tried it on both machines, nothing, so either my expensive gaming keyboard chose that minute to give up or the KVM box is bugged and killed it. Sigh

Glory - Well I needed a new keyboard anyway and this Corsair K55 is nice without being too expensive, not sure about the lighting though, it has 12 pre-programmed lighting set ups across 3 "zones" or you can create your own!!
I have settled for FN-8, and nice white glow across all 3 zones, ;-)
