Not sure which rule I'm supposed to have broken now.

Posting large pictures. Please remember not everyone has large screens and some view these pages on a moblie.

This is a much better size and takes seconds to edit in Imgur

Project is currently down. This is the message

Dear friends, as many of you already noticed, the Asteroids@home project has been down for several days now. The reason is an unexpected hardware failure of one of our servers. This machine has served us devotedly non-stop for many years, but its life came to the end. Now we need to replace it and it will take some time. Covid-19 situation makes things even more difficult as there are so many ongoing restrictions and administrative obstacles that we cannot be sure of any plans or schedules for the next few months to come. We will still try to do our best to find some temporary solution but we cannot guarantee any date. And we will still need to find a final and stable solution after that. Thank you for your patience.

We hope to be back soon! The Asteroids@home team.

So... now that face masks are compulsory in all British stores

Will be from the 24th July, currently they are still optional, and in all the BBC reports they are called "face coverings"

I have had McAfee block a 176.10.99.200 telling me that boinc is using this address? This has been happening now for a few days when I start up. Is this a valid address? Gary

I went here https://www.ultratools.com/tools/ipWhoisLookup and entered the ip address and this is the result

inetnum: 176.10.99.192 - 176.10.99.223
netname: ACCESSNOW
descr: Access Now Tor Exit Relay
remarks: ---------------------------------
remarks: This network is used for research
remarks: in anonymization services and
remarks: provides Tor exit nodes to end
remarks: users.
remarks: Sent abuse to: servers@accessnow.org

So if you use TOR then it is valid.

The problem is the source, the wet meat markets in China

Well that is one possibility, but until there is scientific proof, which as yet there is not, you cannot hold any one responsible. If there was not unrestricted air travel then whatever happend anywhere would not spread with the speed this has. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of air travel and was planning to visit the US next year and realised at my age that opportunity has now gone.

No country will be able to hold a county like China "Responsible" and if any legal or otherwise measures were tried how long to the think the arguing would go on.

No, what I am concerned with is preventing anything like this happening again, and to me one of the first things that need to be done is to restrict all air travel, rich and famous or someone like me.

I would like to live out the rest of my days without having the threat of premature termination hanging over me.

The interesting question from all of this is "How do we prevent it happening again"

Looking at the way the virus was originally transmitted it would appear unrestricted air travel was the main cause.

Governments were not prepared.

Personally I suspect we have seen the end of free movement around the world. Unless we can come up with a way to predict this sort of pandemic, and quickly come up with a cure, unrestricted air travel is likely to cause it to happen again and again.

It will also take a long time for the "social distancing" mindset to pass from the collective consciousness.

I am 69 this month, and have a strong feeling the world has changed and it will never return to the way it was in my lifetime.

Seti back up to speed and all my machines have full caches. Might as well keep going to the end. I will then have 2 perfectly good Linux PC's that were built specifically for Seti and will have nothing to do.

If I crunch for another project the 2 Windows machines will be sufficient I think.

Also if the cafe/restaurant provides take away/delivery only then they can still open.
My small but very popular cafe across the road has set up a table in the doorway and are doing a "take away service" from there

They dang well better not make this go on for long or an awful lot of people won't have jobs to go back to.

3-6 months was one estimate I saw, Of course that would need the food distribution network to not succumb, if it does all bets are off !!

When Seti@Home goes away at the end of the month, can we continue to use it as a screen saver?

As the screensaver is a visual representation of the work being processed, I am afraid not. With no work the screensaver will not start.

Main may be up but Beta is down.

Yes and may be for a while
Eric posted

"It's the Friday before a holiday week and the servers know it.

The file system containing the beta project uploads directory is having problems, so beta is down until further notice.

This problem may be affecting the rate at which the main project can handle results, so the validation and assimilation queues are getting large, which may affect the rate of work generation."

Hopefully a new driver comes out soon that fixes this or BOINC updates their software to accommodate the changes from NVIDIA.

It is not BOINC that needs to update, it is SETI@Home apps that have the problem with the Nvidia drivers. Specifically the OpenCL app

If you look here you will see it is a well know problem

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84694

Personally I have dropped OpenCL and am using the CUDA app, no problems so far, except they take much longer to run.

If Nvidia do not feel it is worth updating then SETI@Home will need to update their app.

Boinc does not process the work units that is done by each projects applications.

The problem is the latest Nividia drivers

If you look on the SETI@Home forums you will see the problem is well known

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84694

The quickest fix is to re-install the 431.60 drivers
