I remember the day after Roe V Wade was overturned, a far right you tuber (who has visited Mar-A -Lago), posted a video in which he celebrated the decision, ranted gleefully about freedoms and ended with the words "Remember our goal is the Handmaidens Tale and nothing less." |

Bit of a milestone today my existing "POTS"(Plain old Telephone Service) phone line has gone totally digital. When(and mostly if) I finally get fibre to my flat the old copper cables and a whole way of communicating will be gone forever. My job on leaving school was as TTA (Trainee technician apprentice) for Post Office Telephones, later BT, now EE. I can vividly remember the first time I entered my local ATE (automatic telephone exchange) central office I believe across the pond, This was in 1968, while there was some new equipment, two whole floors had Strowger step by step equipment that was installed in 1938. In my life time I have seen the old "step by step" system, replace by electronic, then digital and now VOIP the difference being that all the previous systems required a pair of copper wires all the way from the exchange, central office, to the phone, a physical connection, full VOIP does not, just some form of connection to the internet, be it a fibre cable or even 5G broadband. End of an era. |

Before getting Real excited.... that Server Status update was dated.... 02/21/2021 which was 10 months ago. Obviously the "end of the month" came and went 10 times. Actually the date is 02/12/2021 not 02/21/2021. I assumed that as the project is based in Prague which uses dd/mm/yyyy then it is dated the 2nd December 2021. If however it is using the American system of mm/dd/yyyy then yes it is 10 months old Another good reason that scientific projects should use the full date so there is no misunderstanding. |

Seems BT no longer cares about older people who do not have or want an internet connection or mobile phone or live in and area (like my late father did) that had no reliable mobile signal or it seems care about what Ofcom states. "Under guidelines laid down by industry regulator Ofcom, BT must ensure customers can contact emergency services in a power cut that lasts more than an hour. But how this can be achieved if you lose access from an internet phone line or do not have a mobile phone – or signal – is not clear. " https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-10198081/BT-warned-phone-shake-puts-vulnerable-risk.html Also it would appear that I will have to bin my expensive gaming router, as the "Digital Voice" only works with the new BT hub. I have not used a BT hub in well over 2 years and have no intention of starting now. Seems it might finally be time to drop the landline and look for a new ISP.[/url] |

The point being, moderators at Seti have so little to do that they must target outspoken individuals such as myself, laying in wait for one wrong word to be posted so they may pounce. It's the only joy they can find in this world. Trust me, far fewer people are offended on the boards by my words, other than the mods themselves. You were banned for discussion moderator actions which is against the rules, and more importantly describing moderators using the "C" word. I care nothing about your politics, but I will not sit by and take that sort of language from anyone. So you believe only a few are offended by your language, which I do not believe and is totally beside the point, there are rules. You broke several in quick succession. You know better than anyone what the rules are so please don't play the persecuted here. Make your points using facts and without using obscenities or calling out the moderators and your post will not be hidden and you will not end up getting banned. |

Winning while banished by the left wing liberals at Seti You were banned for using an obscenity to describe moderators, and even as a moderators I do not believe I have to put up with that. This was after you had made several post discussing moderators and their decisions which you know is against the rules. |

Project is currently down. This is the messageDear friends, as many of you already noticed, the Asteroids@home project has been down for several days now. The reason is an unexpected hardware failure of one of our servers. This machine has served us devotedly non-stop for many years, but its life came to the end. Now we need to replace it and it will take some time. Covid-19 situation makes things even more difficult as there are so many ongoing restrictions and administrative obstacles that we cannot be sure of any plans or schedules for the next few months to come. We will still try to do our best to find some temporary solution but we cannot guarantee any date. And we will still need to find a final and stable solution after that. Thank you for your patience. |

I have had McAfee block a 176.10.99.200 telling me that boinc is using this address? This has been happening now for a few days when I start up. Is this a valid address? Gary I went here https://www.ultratools.com/tools/ipWhoisLookup and entered the ip address and this is the result inetnum: 176.10.99.192 - 176.10.99.223 netname: ACCESSNOW descr: Access Now Tor Exit Relay remarks: --------------------------------- remarks: This network is used for research remarks: in anonymization services and remarks: provides Tor exit nodes to end remarks: users. remarks: Sent abuse to: servers@accessnow.org So if you use TOR then it is valid. |

The problem is the source, the wet meat markets in China Well that is one possibility, but until there is scientific proof, which as yet there is not, you cannot hold any one responsible. If there was not unrestricted air travel then whatever happend anywhere would not spread with the speed this has. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of air travel and was planning to visit the US next year and realised at my age that opportunity has now gone. No country will be able to hold a county like China "Responsible" and if any legal or otherwise measures were tried how long to the think the arguing would go on. No, what I am concerned with is preventing anything like this happening again, and to me one of the first things that need to be done is to restrict all air travel, rich and famous or someone like me. I would like to live out the rest of my days without having the threat of premature termination hanging over me. |

The interesting question from all of this is "How do we prevent it happening again" Looking at the way the virus was originally transmitted it would appear unrestricted air travel was the main cause. Governments were not prepared. Personally I suspect we have seen the end of free movement around the world. Unless we can come up with a way to predict this sort of pandemic, and quickly come up with a cure, unrestricted air travel is likely to cause it to happen again and again. It will also take a long time for the "social distancing" mindset to pass from the collective consciousness. I am 69 this month, and have a strong feeling the world has changed and it will never return to the way it was in my lifetime. |
