21) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Problem: Windows XP taskbar visible while screensaver running (Message 2857)
Posted 29 Jan 2006 by Michael Roycraft
Post:
I have BOINC version 5.2.13 running in Windows XP. The only project attached is Seti@Home. The screensaver is set to start after 5 minutes of inactivity, to run the Seti@Home screensaver graphic for one minute and then go to a blank screen. When the screensaver is running with a blank screen the Windows (XP) taskbar is visible at the bottom of the screen. The monitor screen is all blank (black) except for the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the display. If I move the mouse to close the screensaver, minimize all programs and click on a desktop item to select (but not open) it, when the screensaver starts again the taskbar is no longer visible. But eventually the taskbar reappears at the bottom of the otherwise blank monitor screen. Anyone else had this happen? Any suggestions about how to fix it?

twobears,

An easy workaround, especially as you don't seem too wrapped up in viewing the graphics (1 minute before blanking) is to forgo the screensaver entirely. Right-click empty desktop, "Properties", "Screensaver" tab, select "none", apply, and OK. If at some point afterward you want to see the graphics, just open the BoincManager interface, highlight the running WU on the "Work" tab, and click "Show Graphics".

My pc does not go out of "screen saver" hitting any key too
However when I move the mouse , its black screen disapears almost immediately
board kt7vt2 video card geforce2 mx400

How about using the default screen saver instead ?
*this one does not use graphics and should not end on graphics card compatibility issues

Carlos,

The best performance and stability can be yours, if you set the screensaver option to "none".

ATI Radeon 9550 video card
This system has always had video stability issues. This is the second video card as the original one had a BIOS conflict with the system board. My best guess is that there is a 3D rendering issue.
The screensaver comes on and runs with no issues. But once the video goes to power off after any period of time, I cannot bring the video back up. If I hit a key to revive the machine it is just stuck on a black screen. The monitor powers back up as I have a constant green power light on the monitor (it flashes green in power save mode), but it just shows a black screen. If I hit space bar a few times more the machine reboots after about three miniutes. All open apps are lost.
Boinc has no issues if I allow it to run without the screensaver.

Jeff,

You might try checking to determine if your ATI drivers are up-to-date. Start by reading this thread. If you find that your drivers are seriously out-of-date, use the Catalyst driver removal tool found at the ATI site, and download and install a newer driver. Unless you have installed MS .NET framewoark, I'd suggest you settle for drivers from no later than November 2005. Hope you get your joy here. :-)

Help!
BOINC just locks up on startup - It was working fine then the machine crashed. It appaears that BOINC did not shut down properly and it is just hanging on start. If I am quick enough I can change tabs but there is nothing in the messages output to tell me what is happening (or not as the case my be). I have tried a repair and a remove/reinstall to no avail

Any other suggestions??

TIA

Scoot

Scooter, You might try, in order,
1 ) Completely shutdown, then coldstart your computer, retry Boinc.
2 ) If no success, then use the "repair" option on an install, then retry step 1.
3 ) Still no joy? Properly uninstall Boinc, without deleting anything else in the folder, reinstall, retry step 1.

When the 2nd project starts a WU this WU do have a dead-time
I believe that with this setup u will *not* meet deadlines
of the secondary project (resource share 1)
U waste u CPU time crunching that WUs that does not meet deadline.

Carlos,

No, a resource share of 1 will not waste the WU or CPU time. As the deadline nears for the secondary project WU, BOINC will temporarily go into Earliest Deadline First mode, ensuring that even the smallest share meets it's deadline. Just thought I'd clear that up for all.

Henry, John, Paul, Bill,

Please, excuse the jump-in of someone completely unqualified to address networking, but one of my neurons mis-fired and I had a thought - perhaps the best person to convince a network admin would be another network admin? Henry, you might try contacting the administrator of one of the large computer farms contributing to one of the projects. For instance, at Einstein, some of these might include University of Toronto at Mississauga University of Toronto at Scarborough, University of North British Columbia, or Ohio State University School of Engineering. I don't have contact info for any of these network admins, but I'd bet that you're resourceful enough to dig into it and track it down, and I think it would be very likely that they'd be helpful.

If my idea is entirely off-the-wall, I'll just blame it on inadequate coffee intake, as I'm only halfway into my first cup. :-)

Somebody will probably say bad things about me for aborting a number of results, but by the time the system decided to go into EDF most of them wouldn't have completed before the deadline anyway.

Thanks again for the help!

DarkStar,

What's bad to say about someone who's considerate enough to abort work??? If it's aborted, it goes back to be re-assigned almost immediately, whereas if it were ignored instead, you co-crunchers would have to wait until it timed-out, got re-assigned and crunched.

i attempted to again connect with localhost and was told repeatedly that it could not connect.

I removed the boinc software and attemtped to reinstall the latest version and it still could not connect to local host

i then removed that software again and attempted to download the older version with the same results.

does anyone hav any ideas wher eon my computer i might be having a problem connecting to local host again

You might try taking Boinc out of your Startup folder if it's there, and start Boinc manually.

Different accounts for everything? SIMPLE! I was just thinking the other day that I just don't have enough passwords and account numbers to remember. Rosetta account email, rosetta account key, rosetta account screen name, seti account email (no longer active, but I'm not about to try and change it using this interface), seti account password - er, no, wait, that must be my account key. Uh...or is that the account key I got from Rosetta? Password doesn't work, but maybe that's because it demanded a format different than the one I used on seti...

Scott,

Yes, there is more of a "learning curve" to climb, but take my word, it's a short and easy grade. The account #s and passwords need only be entered once (or twice, if you're posting to the messageboards) for each project, and your browser will do all the remembering for you. It may help if you create a folder on your email client and save the the various account emails, but again, not a difficult step. I would not suggest that your mind is inflexible enough to absorb the differences, and I don't think you should sell yourself short in that regard; we all retain the capacity to learn and advance our knowledge. :-)

Buck up, chap, the dinosaur is now extinct, but the new world awaits you, and it's a rewarding experience.

31) Message boards : BOINC Manager : I miss the old SETI@Home (Message 2522)

Post:
Sigh.

"You may use this software on a computer system only if you own the system or have the permission of the owner."

I did have permission of the owner to run SETI classic, I do not have permission to run BOINC (because it requires opening of ports violating our security policies). Therefore SETI classic worked, BOINC doesn't. Ergo in my opinion and for me personally BOINC = backwards step because I and colleagues can no longer participate. Therefore (original post subject) I miss SETI classic.

"I don't think that the sort of illegal and unethical parasitic purposes..."

I'm sure that SETI is grateful for all the worktime donated to it by organisations allowing their computers to be used for their work.

iochta,

Thank you for the explanation of permissions, and I withdraw my "scold", in your case.
I suppose it is likely that the old Seti used ports that were commonly on the "approved" map, though I never looked into that during the time I did SetiClassic. I t is understandable that your employer has tight restrictions on port use, and unfortunate that policy doesn't allow for them to make exceptions for BOINCing. Perhaps your IT Manager could be persuaded by a well-organized proposal, including a look at some of the larger "farms" that run BOINC-based projects? To the best of my knowledge (limited to the BOINC and Einstein boards), there has never been a situation where these ports have been exploited for a security compromise.

Do you know how to get BOINC working through a strict firewall in Windows. I cannot open any ports (not up to me), the proxy settings are greyed out.

If the owner of the PC will not allow you to run BOINC (which means opening ports), you are violating the terms and conditions by running it. So - don't run it on that PC.

Which is basically my point. Old SETI worked fine, BOINC doesn't. Therefore BOINC = backwards step IMO.

Hmm,

So SetiClassic was better because...it allowed you to hijack someone else's computer so that you could gain credit at their expense - computer cost+power+maintenance? I don't think that the sort of illegal and unethical parasitic purposes you have in mind will find much sympathy here, we don't really want to become your co-conspirators.

What you describe is exactly what it should be doing, given your preference settings. The resource share is time share, but both projects do not run simultaneously on a single non-hyperthreaded processor, they run alternately.

I have the same problem, but I believe it relates to the startup sequence and I don't know how to change it.

Typically on startup BOINC starts before my network connection has established. It then says it can't connect and no project or work shows in the manager and Retry Communications does nothing.
If I manually start BOINC in those cases it immediately starts up OK.
Sometimes it does start OK, but I don't know why.
(I'm running Seti@Home)

Lindroth,
I am almost certain that you are correct about sequence. All you have to do to seehow things bet mixed up there is open task manager and mote the order of processes listed, then reboot and repeat the procedure. Rarely is the sequence the same. There are just too many processes, AV, Network, drivers, peripheral device software loading simultaneously.
I suggest you do as I've suggested to Derek, the gui_rpc_auth trick works for many. If that fails to solve, then either re-install Boinc without the "Start at logon" option enabled, or do the startup folder or msconfig trick I detailed to Derek.

What Operating System is running?

Windows XP Home Edition

OK, navigate to your Boinc folder, click on the "View" button at the top, and click on "Details". In the "Size" column, look for any files that are larger than 5000 KB, and type them out, (don't try to copy-and-paste} and list them for me, including size, please.

Derek,

First, try this:
Close Boinc Manager.
Navigate to your BOINC folder.
Find and open the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg with Notepad.
Delete everything in it (it should be a 32 character hexadecimal key in there).
Press return once, so it shows an empty line in the file.
Save the file and exit it.

Start Boinc Manager.
What happens?

If this doesn't work, another method is to remove Boinc from the startup folder, or use msconfig to remove it from the startup sequence. Using either of these last two options will mean that you will have to start Boinc Manager manually, from the Start/All Programs menu.

A _new_ project? I think you would be better served by sticking to whatever projects you are already running, until you get your problems solved. Please read at least the "getting started" guide in the Wiki, and search for information on hosts and accounts, and get a good understanding of the way this all works. I'm not sure that I'm understanding what you are doing, but I think you have a basic misunderstanding somewhere, and this is making things very complicated for you that should be quite simple.

FiascoBro,

What you are starting is a new work unit, not a new project. Projects are Einstein, CPDN, Seti, Rosetta, etc. Workunits are individual pieces of work within one of the projects.

Though if it takes 19+ hours to process, it may seem like a whole project, I guess. LOL
