Could the BOINC project talk with various computer manufacturers and try to get them to install the software (along with a fitting project for the computer's capabilities) on all the new machines they make? They could make it a selling point.

I am interested in alpha/beta testing new projects, but I have no clue where to find these until they have already become well known. Is there a place to find projects still in early stages of development?

It doesn't have to be processed by a BOINC project.

I know that BOINC is for distributed computing, but I had this great idea the other day: what if (as kind of a partner with computing projects) some universities could do a distributed science project. Say, an air sampling project. People could sign up and receive an air sampling kit that everyone was to use at a certain time. Either the kit or the results could be sent back to the university for study--maybe the results could be processed by a BOINC project! :-)

I know that this is off topic, but it seems the best place to post this.

I've heard that it's possible to do most of these things (compiler wise) on Windows using Cygwin. It's free and open-source. As for the projects, I only intended to do it for those that were open-source. I also intended for the capability to be built into BOINC itself, so that it could guarantee that the users hadn't been messing with the code.

For the record, I'm in a hurry so that I can get more results done and help out the scientists more.

I heard that it is possible to get up to a 25% performance boost on CPU-intensive programs like many BOINC projects by simply compiling the programs on the computer that's using them. Would it be possible to put an option in BOINC that (when set) allows the user to download the source code for the project and compile it on their computer for faster running? I, for one, would definitely use it.

Can't the BOINC project kind of thumbscrew its most popular projects into doing this?

I know this has been brought up ad nauseam, but will the next version of BOINC have the ability to run the same task on multiple cores at once? I have a dual-core machine, and individual tasks (for, say, ClimatePrediction.net) would run a whole lot faster with this capability.
