. . . Everybody should get a nice credit bump today from all their pendings finally clearing back to normalcy.

to me it looks like rather everybody got a credit-average cut

could download tasks again, but still got a lot of pendings

besides that; universe is all "norminal" again . . .

CAMK is online again

universe@home website displays "shutdown for maintenance"

could upload but all stuck in "ready to report"

updates pushed back 1 hour so no new tasks

for the middle of a Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend that's some progress

I decided to step out on a limb and email the university and Radim Vanco in an attempt to see if he will post an update.

Thanks

I blame it all on Team L'Alliance Francophone who dropped all their bunkered tasks today. The upload server always had issues with too many uploads in progress. Those bunkered results probably overwhelmed the server.

why would they bunker tasks?

the whole CAMK network http://www.camk.edu.pl/en is down not just universeathome
(Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center, Polish: Centrum Astronomiczne im. Mikołaja Kopernika)

when scheduled maintenance
the project always gave notice in the manager and message board,
so this seems to be unscheduled

PAN https://institution.pan.pl/ is ok but has no news why CAMK is down

in (anti)social media accounts of CAMK I couldn't find any explanations either

it's a black friday weekend, if anyone is really in the hurry to find out why

one could try call numbers listed here: https://camkpan.bip.gov.pl/

OK, I understand the idea:

"Encourage new projects . . . The hope is that SU will lead to the creation of many more projects."

The BOINC and SU project lists look about the same.

So, are there any projects that started because of SU that weren't there before already as BOINC-projects?

apparently they have time to check their server about once a week . . . and so they did:

The project is temporarily down.

I am very sorry to inform you that the project is temporarily down. The database system was still running on a temporary hardware solution which failed a few days ago and the hardware is dead. We still don't have the planned new server and due to holidays and other circumstances we can't hurry anything up. New server should be available on Septemember or October so project will propably be down until then. We don't have any sufficient hardware for other temporary solution and I also think that the best solution is to get the project online when it is finally on a new stable hardware because I know that the project outages every few weeks are very frustrating.

I will post here later any new information when available.

well then lets see how the Harvest moon shines on this project . . .

1.) Why is this not there?

There is apparently a portable apps boincversion;

https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/boinc-portable

but I can’t see it in the list of recommended boincversions on the boinc page:

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Is this “official”, vetted, tested or recommended?

2.) Why is this still there?

On the boinc wiki page " Installing boinc"under point 3.7 “Using a bootable image”:

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC

Instead of some PADOLF@home-nonsense and then “404 not found” it links now directly to “404”

I don’t know why this would be helpful, or why it was ever there in the first place . . .

their update:

Dear friends, as many of you already noticed, the Asteroids@home project has been down for several days now. The reason is an unexpected hardware failure of one of our servers. This machine has served us devotedly non-stop for many years, but its life came to the end. Now we need to replace it and it will take some time. Covid-19 situation makes things even more difficult as there are so many ongoing restrictions and administrative obstacles that we cannot be sure of any plans or schedules for the next few months to come. We will still try to do our best to find some temporary solution but we cannot guarantee any date. And we will still need to find a final and stable solution after that. Thank you for your patience.

We hope to be back soon! The Asteroids@home team.

"plural"?

OK then, one more example from another project:

http://www.cosmologyathome.org/forum_thread.php?id=7710&postid=22475

I actually wanted to add that project around that time, actually saw all that spam
screaming at me back then and was discouraged like many others.

And who asked all those volunteers if they wanted their contribution next to spam?

first of all: thanks to Steven for the email-effort and lets hope Radim Vanco is ok!

So just because one project doesn't do what is considered normal, you generalize and throw all projects under the bus. Because I'm sure you can put some evidence down on your claim that "projects" (plural) are spamming and spreading Trojans? (And it's still only Malwarebytes that gives this problem, none of the myriad of other AV/AM options does, which makes it in my opinion still a false positive from Malwarebytes)

Btw, the easiest thing to do is just leave a project that does these things this way. An admin will notice a lack of hungry computers earlier than posts on his own forums.

OK then, let's try to clarify

my words: “appear to”

your words: "evidence", that’s in your head

Many don't need evidence but flashy headlines like "boinc spreading trojan".(that makes the mo)

I don’t like unfit generalization either, neither do you or Dave.
Great, how smart we are, good for us. We’re not alone and I wasn’t talking about me.

Funding, support and volunteers for science depend on public opinion.
(Seti was once in the NASA budget, a 10year project, cut short within a year)
_______________________________________________________________________________

The "trojan-or-not" might be the smallest part or a none issue.
I was trying to put to put that into the the context of the trouble the project is in as we all can see now.

The project does not communicate and wasted lot's of crunching time,
steeling from other projects, where all that crunching could have been applied productively.

That evidently happened, does not look good and could be used as an example to cut funding anywhere,
discourage future volunteers etc.

I don't throw anyone under the bus.
I'm still crunching for other projects and if this one recovers I will come back.

And again I hope Radim Vanco is ok!

I see no evidence for such a generalisation.

that's fine, you don't have to

and apologies for the typo (now around 50 posts in that thread)

yet as of this timestamp the 3 essentials didn't change;

1.) upload still not working

2.) message board ignored and therefore useless

3.) crunching wasted

in my case 754 tasks which where completed more than a week ago

tried like all the others to upload since then and are now expired

I'm not trying to access downloaded data - I'm trying to access a website.

And now I've followed the rather convoluted procedure for raising a support ticket with Malwarebytes. I'll let you know what they say.

Well thank you and let's park the trojan-or-not for a minute.

1.) wasted volunteer computing:

Someone talked completely past the message board,
opened a "server outage resolved"-thread,
restarted the servers and achieved: mostly nothing.

Since then that thread alone counts 71 posts that boincers still can't upload the completed tasks!
And yet again the same as for many weeks before: they're all talking to an empty space!
That message board is ignored and therefore a useless fake!

And: all this tasks are mostly expired by now so: THE PROJECT WASTED ALL THAT CRUNCHING!

2.) unattended site/servers free to raid:

I admire the spirit of running a project alone with the little resources available.

Unfortunately; is that secure nowadays?

Displaying a site/server as unattended for weeks and therefore free to raid?

What does that lead to?

As we seen with another project:

Trolls started spamming the the message boards, and that looks like that University spamming.

The bigger picture:

Projects, volunteer computing, citizen science and such;

appear to be spamming, spreading trojans and wasting volunteer contribution.

How much of this IS accidental or intended assault on reputation doesn't even make a difference.

The result is the same shame. There goes the neighborhood.

I have malwarebytes running on my machines and it has just ( last 2 days) started blocking asteroids website because it thinks there is a trojan on the site. Cannot connect to the project directly. has anyone had the problem and/or how do i tell the project directly?

To get onto the site safely, my guess is the average Linux machine would do it.

and my guess is that linux is completly besides the point;

boincers have been asking all over their forum - no response at all

"we found/have some glitches - servers will be down for maintenance"

easily typed in seconds and not a Mars mission, other projects can do that all the time

then boincers could know if they're even still in charge of their site and

not someone else playing their project like a fiddle . . .

and that's the point,

they're like Yeltsin: nobody knows if they're still in charge

Linux is just an OS and was never designed to fix indecent behaviourhorror

1) "tell the project directly"?

how many tried, it's probably easier to contact General Nakasone "directly" . . .

There have been problems with the "purger down" and "server out of disc space" for weeks now

boincers opened multiple threads about this all over the forums there, but no response at all!

So if this would be a hardware problem, then "whoever" would communicate that and ask for specific donations.

. . . to me it looks like this project has been hacked . . .

{see weird stuff like USERoftheDay with a profile and first day of sign-up with no credit yet,

2 weeks ago there was one without any credit or even a computer registered yet but a profile already and UotD,

isn't there a minimum credit/time requirement for very good reasons? or does every project handle this differently?

It's like someone showing off they can do with this site whatever they want and nobody cares, another "padolf"-clown?}

As we know, telling over the website is useless (and probably unsafe)

So could someone from University-Circles contact the Charles-University of Prag and ask them

if their servers run for science or some mafia/hired internet trolls?

2) I don't know, I just run work units, are there any "minimum safety standards" for boincprojects?

more essentially;

IS the "underfunded-one-man-part-time~project"-thing turning into a security~problem?

Has this been a topic at all?
"Krebs on security"?
anyone?
