I joined Universe@Home a few weeks ago and now have over 51,000 work done.

But Universe@Home does not appear in my Free DC account.

How can I get Free DC to include Universe@Home on my Free DC progress stats?
Edit: as for the suggestion that Putin can take over your computer via a project within BOINC, he probably could if he wanted to. But then he'd probably use a zero day exploit within your operating system of choice that is unknown by that operating system of choice, as that's easier to widespread use than via a BOINC project that only a handful of people use.
I didn't mean to imply that Putin himself would bother with my computer. But there's an army of Russian miscreants out there who are wreaking cyber havoc on governmental, commercial and private networks.

I don't know how to reinstall BOINC as a service. I am ignorant on the technical aspects of BOINC.

Si-Dock is based at a Russian academy. Russia just launched heavy cyber attacks on Ukraine. Say Russia invades Ukraine and the USA and allies impose strict sanctions against them.
Putin launches retaliatory cyber attacks on the US and allies, maybe using non-governmental networks. Do we have to worry about our computers being vulnerable to Russian cyber adventures?

Am I being paranoid?

Thanks again.

On top of those I’m running Climate Prediction, Si-Dock and TN-Grid. Climate Prediction only has Linux work in the medium term so you’d have to run WSL and the other two both have small servers so occasionally have glitches but all three are worthy of consideration.
Can't do Linux, so I will check out Si-Dock and TN-Grid.
TN-Grid is not accepting new accounts.

So I added Si-Dock and it is running now.

Thanks again.

Rosetta is not sending me any new tasks that work on my computer because I deleted Virtual Box. It is not a good match for this old machine. It has run 24/7/365 for almost five years very reliably (knocking on wood). Some have suggested a new machine, but at this time, I don't have spousal permission for new acquisitions (having bought three guitars and a new telescope mount). She correctly says this is a perfectly good computer and can't agree on the need for a new one.

Right now, it's running only Milky Way and World Community Grid. It had been running four projects, but SETI is gone, POGS is gone, Asteroids is in limbo and Rosetta is being difficult.

I need a new project that is stable, does worthwhile work and won't bog down or take over the computer. Here is the configuration:

ID: 3551508 7.16.20 Authentic AMDAMD A6-6400K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 21 Model 19 Stepping 1]
(2 processors) AMD AMD Radeon HD 7400/7500/8300/8400 series (Scrapper) (768MB) driver: 1.4.1848 OpenCL: 1.2
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 15 Jan 2022, 17:14:58 UTC
8 G of memory and a 1 Tb hard drive.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your consideration.

28) Message boards : Projects : Milkyway is down and unreachable (Message 106421)

Post:
Milkyway is back up and all is green on server status page.

Event log says the project is temporarily down for maintenance.

The message from Milky Way administrators said, "Older clients may still be using old versions of SSL that need TLS 1.0 or 1.1. Once we stop supporting these services, these older clients may encounter issues when trying to communicate and/or get work from the MilkyWay@home server. In order to prevent this, you should update to at least the 7.210 7.2.10 BOINC client."

That message was a little vague. And being the Whiz Kid that I am, I didn't grasp what the message meant. Maybe the people for whom the message was intended understood it. I did not.

How old is "old?"

I am old. My computer, not so old.

Here's the BOINC Manager description of my computer:
AuthenticAMD
AMD A6-6400K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 21 Model 19 Stepping 1]
(2 processors) AMD AMD Radeon HD 7400/7500/8300/8400 series (Scrapper) (768MB) driver: 1.4.1848 OpenCL: 1.2 Microsoft Windows 7
Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00)

I runs BOINC Version 7.16.20, which I just downloaded a few days ago.

Does this computer fit into the category of "old clients" per the message above?

Do I need to do something?

Any help?

Have you tried the Milky way boards

I can't connect with any aspect of MilkyWay.- not my account, new work, message boards or home page. Even the link on the BOINC science project list doesn't work.

Well I looked here

https://asteroidsathome.net/project.html

And saw this dated 02/12/21

Project Asteroids@home
Server status - offline
Update - 02-12-2021

Project servers are currently offline for longer period than expected. The main reason is that waiting for a new server took longer than expected. We finally have a new server but it will still take some time to start the project again. The new server will be at a different location than old servers are, all the project data have to be transferred there and BOINC server must be upgraded to the latest version before running up again. The project was running on three servers which two of them crashed. BOINC project data was using those two bad servers, non-BOINC project data was on the third server. New server will be running BOINC project data from both bad servers.

I am sorry I didn't post any news earlier. If needed I will post additional information here. I suppose that the project will be ready to continue by the end of month. This website is now running temporary on a Raspberry Pi and will switch to a new server when ready.

Before getting Real excited.... that Server Status update was dated.... 02/21/2021 which was 10 months ago. Obviously the "end of the month" came and went 10 times.

Bill F

Plus, Asteroids@Home no longer shows up in the list of BOINC projects.

In the absence of any Rosetta tasks in several weeks, I decided to try Folding@Home, which is not a BOINC project.

I was running WCG and Milky Way. Then last night I got a Rosetta Project.

But Folding made my Milky Way and Rosetta tasks run for 14 hours. Stopped Folding and they completed in less than an hour.

So I my discontinue Folding@Home. Seemed like a good project, but it slowed my old computer to a crawl.

Yep!
According to a new post on Asteroid@home's homepage, the project is down and will remain down until September / October, dependent upon when their new server arrives.

So do you think Asteoids@Home will really be back in September/October or will it just whither away from neglect and lack of support from the host university?

Last month WCG got unstuck for a while:
21 June 2021:
"Somehow, most of the problems with extra-long completion times and logging me off have resolved themselves, either by divine intervention, possibly the ministrations of support entities or maybe even something unknown that I did.
Now all four of my projects are running: WCG, Asteroids, Milky Way and Rosetta."

SInce then, Asteroids have been incommunicado and WCG is still sending me tasks that take three of more days to complete.

Natasha at WCG tech help has responded to several of my complaints wiith suggestions. I sent them event logs, lines from BOINC with some temporary effect see post from 21 June above). She said it's normal for some tasks to take that long, but it's not possible to pre-screen those tasks. On some, the elapsed time increases past 9 hpours, while the progress tab shows 0.500% wiith no progress and the time remaining INCREASES.

When that happens I just abort them. I've aborted five or six this past week and suspended three more.

Which is a shame, because WCG does important work and I would like to contribute. But not if it ties up my computer for three or more days at a time.

Somehow, most of the problems with extra-long completion times and logging me off have resolved themselves, either by divine intervention, possibly the ministrations of support entities or maybe even something unknown that I did.

Now all four of my projects are running: WCG, Asteroids, Milky Way and Rosetta.

Most of the problem was with World Community Grid, or so I thought. Lately I've been getting mostly normal W.U.s that take 2-3 hours to complete. Now and then I get some that show 2% completion after 5 hours of running. I abort those.

And WCG may have been wrongly accused of bumping me off BOINC, deleting all my projects and tasks and not being able to connect.

Turns out, I think it was Rosetta doing all of that when I update the project or report finished tasks. And when it does happen, sometimes it resolves itself, with my projects and tasks bl.inking on and off the monitor before stabilizing. When it does not stabilize, I restart the compute and that fixes it till the next time.

Sorry, WCG, if I bore false witness. It was not intentional. So all is mostly right with the world.

Unless you listen to the news or pay attention to social media.

Back to BOINC, In the Activities tab of the BOINC Manager I selected Suspend GPU.
Which only suspends work in progress, it doesn't stop you from getting work for the GPU.

I did selected the four boxes in the WCG page Advanced

And saved that device profile.
Ah, but did you also tell to use that device profile? In https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do you can see you have 4 different profiles. If you saved the changes in the default profile, but chose to use the Home profile here, it won't use the changes you saved.
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewDevices.do, click on your device's name, make sure the profile selected here matches the profile you made the changes in.

And crucially, what is the status of "If there is no work available for the project(s) I have selected above, please send me work from another project." ?? If it's checked, this will probably send you GPU work when you don't want it.

I don't know where to find an earlier version of WCG that doesn't feature GPUs.
So now I have suspended the WCG project until I can find a solution.
I appreciate all the suggestions offered on this message board.
I tried to do all th e things you suggested. Then I resumed (un-suspended) WCG.

Now, WCG isn't sending me anything at all, despite several attempts to update.

This is beginning to be more trouble than anything.

Can you suggest any other projects that feature consistency, stability, doing important science and will actually work on my computer?? I'm already running Rosetta and Asteroids.

Bryn Mawr (a prestigious college near Philadelphia where I'm from):

Named after a mining village in South Wales where the original settlers (and myself) came from.

The fact it’s a ladies’ Colledge has caused me grief in the past leading people to assume I’m of the feminine persuasion.

Actually, although the Bryn Mawr undergraduates are all women, the graduate school does admit men.

Back to BOINC, In the Activities tab of the BOINC Manager I selected Suspend GPU. I did selected the four boxes in the WCG page Advanced
options tab as below:

Graphics Card Usage
Do work on my graphics card while computer is in use?
No
Use my AMD/ATI graphics card if possible:
No
Use my Intel graphics card if possible:
No
Use my NVIDIA graphics card if possible:
No

And saved that device profile. I searched the entire BOINC Manager and WCG site for a anything else that mentioned GPUs for anything else I could de-select. But those efforts produced no change in processing of the latest WCG tasks (25-hour completion times, preventing the computer from working on other projects, etc.). Today, the computer ran a Rosetta task and an Asteroids task simultaneously, Now it's running two Asteroids tasks. Those things haven't happened for a long time.

I don't know where to find an earlier version of WCG that doesn't feature GPUs.

So now I have suspended the WCG project until I can find a solution.

I appreciate all the suggestions offered on this message board.

Thank you.
Cheers.
