1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : My wish list (Message 4860)

i have some very noisy computers i would like to have run boinc. i also want to be able to have a conversation or sleep as an example.

"Do work only between the hours of" is a very nice option but i would like this option moved to the preferences for home/school/work.

then, i think, i can have different boinc-worktimes for every computer i have even if they are all on the same location.

this way i can run boinc allways on silent systems and run boinc on noisy systems when it does not disturb anyone.

lucky for boinc i am not the only donator.

not so lucky for all the donators, boinc 5.2.2 is still not respecting our preferences.

i set my prefs to 5 days work. i have the disk space to support this.

all the projects i donate to have work. still my cache gets empty. and then after a while it gets work.

this means the prefs are useless anyway?
if i prefer a 5 day cache i expect work for something around 5 days.

Tom, the info you asked:

the system is an intel prescott 3.2 running win xp pro sp1.
at that moment it was crunching lhc@home, sixtrack 4.67
the prescott is seen by boinc as 2 cpu's, i was running 2 lhc wu's. (in another thread i am told this is very well possible.) and this is the first time i had this problem.
boinc version 4.45

i have this system give or take one year without any problems.

i have some more systems running windows or linux and boinc, but i never have seen this problem before.

on this system nothing was running (after a fresh start) but windows, boinc and of course a virusscanner and a firewall, both mcafee.

@gary, you seem to have the only crashfree computer on this planet, count your blessings.

friendly greetings,
bas

i can understand it is possible that boinc crashes my computer. every other program can, so why not boinc.

i can however not understand why all the wu's on this system are gone after this crash.

if
case=crash
then
send everything to digital heaven

seems to be a bizar option.

this system gets new wu's, it's crunching. but this still is a waste of resources.

bill and jim, thanks for your answers. it is more clear to me now.

i donate to boinc projects. one of my cpu's is an intel prescott 3.2Ghz. running xp. this is seen by boinc as 2 cpu's. i am sure this is a one processor system.

i tried, i can do 2 wu's at the time. donating to more projects and wu's having different crunch times it is very hard to find out what is the most efficient way to donate.

so my question is: do i donate more efficient by doing one wu at once or 2 wu's?

an explanation why 1 or 2 wu's would be much appreciated.

and lets be fair, message boards, are not helping at all.

or maybe you are more interested in a boinc donator union?

Post:
hello,

i think it might be useful to have an extra top level board.

something like: how to respect donators of cpu time.

most boinc projects take the cpu time they use for granted.

the people who donate this time, and therefore pay for it are forgotten.

just throw in a credit system and an almost allways useless message board and there you go.

boinc should be taken to a higher level than this.

never before were there so many people contributing to science. in this case through donating cpu time.

i think that should be respected, not taken for granted.

Well, aside from SETI@Home being off-line while they fix hardware and software problems, and LHC@Home during the last week was off-line with no work because we were in-between expiriments...

So, yes, this *IS* related to the problems currently being worked on at SETI@Home.

but this is not the complete answer. lhc has plenty of work now. i lowered my network connection time to 2 days. my linux machine now get more work from lhc then any other cpu. and this while my linux system is the slowest cpu by far. the rest of my systems run windows.

Please use these boards only for messages related to BOINC software: questions, bug reports, feature requests, etc.

it says so before you get in.
and yes, we are going to use it to test sigs and so on.

it proves my point, message boards are useless for serious donators.

I have been having this problem also, but i just tried something that allowed the others to continue crunching.
suspend seti and then update the other projects, it worked for me.

thank you for your answer, i will try this.

this is not the way boinc should work however.

client software should be able to see more work is needed from the participating projects.

and in the meantime i tried it. this does not work for me.

i think boinc is not respecting the choices of its donators of cpu time.

the boinc persons will tell us it is up to the projects. and the projects will tell us as less as possible.

boinc should keep our cpu's running.
boinc should do that according to our prefs.
there are allways problems in different projects.
that is why we went to boinc, problems in one project makes no difference.
there is allways work from an other project.
therefore, if seti has problems and lhc has lots of work i might expect work from lhc. but this does not happen in time.

since i have boinc 4.45 i often just am not getting work.

i run seti and lhc.
does this have to do with the seti problems? nothing uploads and stays on my software.

i have my systems set to a 7 day network access. which should not be that strange.

i was under the impression boinc was ment to keep our cpu's crunching. not keep waiting until the last moment before getting some work.

i monitor maybe once a day what boinc is doing. i want to see work for my cpu's or i am out.
