I was a volunteer since the first incarnation, before the website layout was switched to a boinc project design. This latest shutdown and re-organization means I will have to sign up yet again. That will be the third time I'll be required to join again. I wish it wasn't necessary and liked the single and double digit user id numbers I had previous times I joined. Even so, I am looking forward to this project finally becoming an active project and plan to run it as soon as I see it has re-launched.

I start boinc manually, and even waiting an extended time after reboot to start boinc the GPUs are not detected.Shutting boinc down and re-starting it doesn't help.

7) Message boards : Projects : Wayland - does it mean the end of GPU processing on linux? (Message 52235)
Posted 31 Jan 2014 by tekwyzrd
Post:
Every day I see Wayland mentioned. It is touted as a superior, simpler alternative to the xorg display server. Many linux distributions and major desktop environments are currently working to move from xorg to wayland. Unfortunately no matter how long I search I can't find any discussion of the potential impact on the distributed computing community. Wayland works with open source drivers like nouveau and the ati and intel mesa drivers but is incompatible with the proprietary drivers required for boinc gpu processing.

As it stands now, when the change-over begins members of the boinc community processing gpu tasks on computers running linux will have to make a tough choice - switch to a profit-driven closed source operating system like windows, continue processing on a frozen distribution with no updates or support, or abandon gpu computing.

I hope my comments here spark discussion and lead to information that may provide another choice that won't adversely impact the continued popularity of linux or distributed gpu computing.
