MarkJ:
Thanks for the heads up. I'm new to linux, so my questions might be kind of dim. I googled up Jessie, and the install for the Pi (the 64 bit ARM) looks pretty straightforward. NEON was a little murkier. Is it part of Jessie?

If I'm reading this right, if I install Jessie and go to the repo, I will get a newer and better version of BOINC. And I should probably fiddle with my computing prefs so that it can handle the 4th simultaneous unit.

Am I close?

I just picked up a raspberry pi 2. It's a great little machine. I decided to see how much the various overclocking settings really mattered, so I set it to work on some Einstein@home computing.

With some mild overclocking, it was processing WUs in about 25 hours. I just set it to "turbo" and noticed that the speed is about the same as far as I can tell, but it is processing 3 work units at a time whereas last time (on milder overclock settings) it was running 2 .

Is the increased number of WUs the result of more cycles being available? Somehow I had gotten the idea in my head that one unit would be run per core. Have I been misled?

And FWIW, does anyone have any general wisdom as to BOINC on the PI?

It all seems to lead back to Carrion. Since this runs what looks like a modified version of BOINC, do WUs completed accrue to my account? It will make comparisons to the various PCs that I've had on the project over the years much simpler.

I'm doing a bit of stunt computing, and I'm going to run either seti@home or einstein@home on a RP that I have lying around using some solar power that I also have lying around.

I know that the RP comes with one of a few versions of unix, and that I can load different versions into it as needed. Which one should I use? I'm sure this has been done to death by now. Is there a standard instruction set that everyone uses?

I know this will sound dumb and superstitious, but I had been putting off upgrading to 7.2.33 until I hit 1,000,000 for fear that it would bugger up my count. Weirder things have happened.

I'm not using remote desktop.

I'll upgrade to the current version in the morning. Thanks for the help.

Got it. It's up and going.

It looks like einstein has blocked out my SETI. The SETI cpu units are showing "waiting to run" and the SETI GPU unit is saying "GPU missing". The work clock is running for none of them. The Einstein units are chugging along like champs, I think.

I set up this computer to run them 50/50. Is that divided up by time, so that in 12 hours or so the SETI stuff will be running and the Einstein stuff cooling its heels?

It's taken me darn near forever, but I have managed to complete 1 Million units. Now I want to sign on to a few projects other than SETI. I am trying to log onto Einstein, but when I try to use the BOINC manager to add a project, I don't see Einstein OR folding listed.

Is it a GPU thing? I'm using a Athelon II 4630, but I figure that that the big programs should be able to run on most GPUs. What am I missing?

Great. Will I have to un-suspend communication when I go online again and hit "update"?

Also, It looks like I submitted this thread twice. Can you delete the duplicate thread?

I have decided to try some offline computing with an old laptop that I have at work. I connected it to the internet and downloaded several days worth of work units to the work buffer. It is now happily sitting on my lab bench chewing away at them. In a few days I plan on hooking it up again, hitting update and uploading/downloading work units.

Is there anything that I am missing? Is there any reason that this would not work?

All I'm getting is "scheduler request pending, requested by user" for the last three hours. Is this a BOINC thing or a seti@home thing? When I look at my account, I also only see one PC. Will that sort out once it updates?

I just noticed that I am no longer seeing three simultaneous tasks. Up to this point, I had seen three: one for each CPU processor, and one for the graphics card (Radeon HD6570). Currently, I only see one, with the note "0.05 CPU +1 ATI GPU".

Under NOTICES on the BOINC manager, I see "file referenced in app_info does not exist:AK_v8b2_win_SSE3_AMD.exe.

I don't update very often. Do I have to reinstall BOINC? If so, is there a good how-to on the boards so that I don't lose my progress? I'm looking to break a million soon, and I don't want to mess it up.

R.

Got the install done, but I'm getting computation errors. It looks like there is some trouble with ati V12.4 and lunatics, so I installed V12.1, and I'm still getting the problem. As a matter of protocol, is there a better place to ask about how to get these things talking to each other?

OK. Got the new driver installed, no problems. I ran CPUID, which told me:
MMX(+), SDNow(+), SSE (1,2,3,4a), x86-64, AMDV. I figure that tells me that I'm SSE4. I went to KWSN.NET, and all I can find is the 0.4 installer. Is there a better place to look?

After this, it's mostly CPU busy, starts, stops, and that kind of thing. I figured out pretty quickly that I couldn't run milkyway. Fine with me. I can stick with SETI.

So, after I update the graphics card driver, I go to CPUZ, and run the file to find the best version of lunatics. After that, I download lunatics, unzip it, copy the "files to install" into the directory containing my seti@home, go to processes and note that 2 versions of seti are running and restart SETI. This should result in blazingly faster speeds.

1) am I missing anything?
2) will I have to download another version of lunatics when I get another card?

Thanks Jord! I'm still running a little behind.

When I said that the computer and the processor were showing, I meant the computer and the graphics "card". This is how it comes up:

Cross-project stats:
BOINCstats.com Free-DC 2 175.32 6,772 7.0.25 AuthenticAMD
AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 630 Processor [Family 16 Model 5 Stepping 2]
(4 processors)

AMD ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200 (RV610) (256MB) driver: 1.4.636 Microsoft Windows 7
Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 3 May 2012 | 23:57:50 UTC

So if I'm getting this right, I need to download the drivers for the Radeon 2XXX driver from AMD.Com. I'm on a win7, 64 bit machine, so it brings up the catalyst software, rev 12.4. No problem. I'll install it.

As to the Lunatics Third Party Apps. I found the installer, V 0.40 64bit. When I run this, what is it doing? Will it synch up with the standard BOINC manager that I am using?

Sorry to be a pain:

I'm brand new to the idea of GPU processing, and need some VERY basic help.

Right now I'm running a HP Pavillion P6654y. It has an N Alvorix RS880 UATX motherboard, at least two open PCI slot, and is currently using onboard ATI Radion 4200 processor.

1) When I check my computers in the BOINC manager, it shows the computer and the processor, does that mean that the processor is being used?

2) I am running seti@home. I understand that they do not have ATI suppot. Does that mean that BOINC sees the card, but it isn't being used? If this is the case, if I were to sign up for (for example) MilkyWay@home which does support ATI, would it use the power of the mighty Radion 4200 in addition to the CPU?

3) I'm looking to boost my numbers. What NVDIA cards should I be considering?

4) is there somewhere on this site with a good GPU processing for dummies area? I'm at a very basic level here.

Thanks. I'll try to have smarter questions next time.
