21) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Something got borked during update (Message 49811)

Very difficult without knowing things such as your operating system, or the BOINC version(s) involved.

OS is XP SP3. Boinc version 7.0.64

If Windows, check what it says in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup what the DATADIR entry is, and if that one's the same as where you put the data directory on your system. If not, change the path here to where your data directory is, then (exit and) restart BOINC.

I used the default directory. Registry has the correct default location. I have the OS set to show hidden files and folders.

The event log says 7/7/2013 5:41:55 PM | | Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

There is no folder named BOINC there for some reason. There's a bunch of stuff there that should be in the BOINC folder but it is scattered around in the App Data folder.

I updated my Boinc client like I always do. Make a backup of the boinc data directory, uninstall old version, install new. When I started the new version there were no projects listed or tasks running. When I checked the Boinc data directory was gone. It's hidden by default and is not removed during an uninstall but for some reason it was gone. I dropped my backup into the folder but the client will not see it. I uninstalled everything again and did another reinstall. I let the install go as I always do using the default locations. When I look the the BOINC data directory folder is not there after a clean install. I've tried everything I can think of but the client will not recognize the copy of the data directory I have. Anyone have any ideas as to what happened and how to fix it?

No close tag in scheduler reply is a server error. Most probably caused by a lack of an end CRLF after the last tag in the sched_reply*.xml file. I had that at DrugDiscovery@Home. report it at the project, it's not something you can fix.

I downgraded from 7.0.54 to 7.0.52 and MW s now working. Same problem on 2 machines. I did make a post on the MW forum.

I upgraded to client 7.0.54 but there seems to be a problem. When I tried to run Milkyway@Home I received the following error message.
3/8/2013 5:00:51 PM | Milkyway@Home | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
3/8/2013 5:00:51 PM | Milkyway@Home | Requesting new tasks for ATI
3/8/2013 5:00:52 PM | Milkyway@Home | [error] Can't parse workunit in scheduler reply: unexpected XML tag or syntax
3/8/2013 5:00:52 PM | Milkyway@Home | [error] No close tag in scheduler reply

Tried detaching and reattaching the project. Same issue. Reverted back to 7.0.52 and Milkyway is now working again.

Jord-

I did some more searching about Milky Way and GTX670's, and saw comments that the nVidia cards lacked good "double precision", required by Milky Way but not SETI, EINSTEIN or GPUGrid.

That is correct. Nvidia has so crippled DP capabilities on even their high end consumer cards as to make them useless for MW@Home or any other future project that may require DP. They've done that to protect the integrity (aka bottom line)of their Tesla cards.

I was forming a judgement from comments made on many forums about the latest versions of BOINC not being so friendly as earlier incarnations.
There's nothing wrong with my hardware, I've checked and double checked.
I could of course avoid work that involves GPU use, but then that work seems to be becoming rather scarce.

There's all the CPU work you could want at WCG. You could also look at Docking, SIMAP and SkynetPOGS. I would also question as to whether you have hardware/software issues. I run multiple computers with the newest version of BOINC and I find it very user friendly if you take the time to learn how to use it or ask people who are already using it for help. Pretty much set and forget.

It was the drivers. There is no APP SDK runtime support for XP in any driver above 11.8 and that is needed to run the tasks. I can only guess that my version 12.3 drivers are working because I just installed them over the previous one. That may also explain why I got BSODs when I tried to update to 12.4.
Thanks for the help.

I'm trying to help a friend get his 5830 running on the new WCG HCC GPU app but Boinc keeps displaying the error message No usable GPU found. Right above that message it says Couldn't get device IDs for platform#0 error-1.

We've updated the drivers, updated boinc, reseated video card, nothing works. The card shows in the device manager, his display works fine and he can play videos. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Is your video card built into the motherboard or is it a separate OEM card? Either way you need to get the model number and go to the Nvidia website and get the correct driver for your model. To find your model in Win7 right click on My Computer, click properties, click device manager, double click display adapters. That should show you what model of video display you have.

That will use the name from my computer and not the log in name I use for every other project. Can that name be changed once I've attached to the project?

There seems to be about an 8% inconclusive results returned on the tasks I've run so far. Is that normal and will they remain that way or be declared invalid?

Hi nanoprobe,

At the moment there are only CPU tasks, but we are developing the application over GPU.

ATI Nvidia or both?

CPU only, at this point. Also, they only take about 1 minute each.

I saw that on the server status page that's why I asked. Never seen CPU tasks run that quickly. Thanks for the heads up.

Any word from the developer you talked with about this issue? I still have heard nothing from him since I sent him the other file he asked for 3 weeks ago. Any news would be appreciated.
