Thanks for the reply.

I've now got a reasonable idea how to do what I want. When (if ?) I get it programmed and running I'll report back here on the slight chance that others might be interested.

Many thanks.

I have 2 identical GPUs on my PC. GPU0 supports my screen and GPU1 runs BOINC project tasks.

At the monment I use the statement "<ignore_nvidia_dev>0</ignore_nvidia_dev>" in cc_config.xml to only allow GPU1 to run BOINC tasks. However I would like to utilise GPU0 to run BOINC tasks during those hours when I'm unlikely to be using the PC (typically overnight).

One way I can see to do this is to write a procedure (Windows 10) to add/delete the cc_config statement and issue the "boinccmd" command to reread the config file according to a schedule.

This raises a few questions though. What happens to a task running on GPU0 when the config file is changed to disallow GPU0 being scheduled to run a task.
1) Is the task just terminated.
2) Does the task then lie dormant until scheduling on GPU0 is enabled again.
3) Is the task put back in the queue and eventually rescheduled on GPU1 when possible.

Whilst looking at the above scheduler problem I noticed another peculiarity.

Collatz tasks have a stated CPU requirement of >0.5 of a CPU.
If I run 2 Collatz (GPU only) tasks then the PrimeGrid (CPU only) task is stopped.
So I forced the Collatz task to require 0.1 of a CPU using app_config and <cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>.
Now when 2 Collatz tasks run PrimeGrid continues quite happily.

I had always understood, possibly wrongly, that you had to leave 'spare' CPU cores for the GPU task to utilise. In my case there are 3 spare CPUs. So, what does the scheduler do about CPU requirements for CPU time for GPUs.

This raised another, minor, problem.
In app_config for Collatz I had

<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>

If the <gpu_usage> tag is omitted then the <cpu_usage> tag is silently ignored. No error message is issued.
The syntax shows that both tags are required so an error message should be issued. Or perhaps allow each tag to default to a value of 1.

Post:
BOINC Client 7.6.22 on Windows 7 frequently does not utilise all available resources for many hours at a time.

4 core CPU with 1 allocated to Boinc.
2 GPUs. GpuA is about 4 to 5 times 'faster' than GpuB
ProjectA - CPU only. Resource share 400.
ProjectB - GPU only. Resource share 50. Can run on either or both GPUs. No restrictions. Tasks take about 2 hours or 12 hours.
ProjectC - GPU only. Resource share 10. Can run on either GPU. Restricted to one task at a time. Each task takes about 10 minutes on GpuA.

PrjA runs without a problem all the time.

Often (I don't keep a close watch) I see that only PrjC is running on one of the GPUs, usually GpuA. The other GPU is not utilised at all. The last time I checked it was this situation for at least 4 hours.

At the beginning of this I get the message
"Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: job cache full; NVIDIA GPU: not highest priority project)"
for PrjB.

All the projects constantly have work available for them.

Why does Boinc waste resources like this and can it be avoided.

I have CPU tasks and GPU tasks running.

When a running CPU task is stopped because either I've moved the mouse or the end of the scheduled time for running occurs, the task is actually stopped (no cpu usage) but the Elapsed Time continues to count up.

If the task is Waiting to Run then the Elapsed Time doesn't count up.

This happens with any project that has CPU tasks. The GPU tasks are unaffected even if the same project is running CPU and GPU tasks.

Is this a known problem and does it have a solution.

Posted 23 Jul 2013 by BobmALCS
Post:
Although I do not expect times reported by the BOINC Manager to be completely accurate I do not expect them to be inaccurate and inconsistent.

In particular for Einstein@Home the BOINC manager displays the following figures.

Progress: 18.181%
Elapsed: 2:35:37
Remaining: 22:43:47

These cannot all be correct.

Taking Progress and Elapsed gives a Total time of about 14 hours.
Taking Elapsed plus Remaining gives about 25 hours.

So, which, if any, of these figures is (nearly) correct.

I have 3 projects running - Einstein, Mikyway, and Seti with resource shares set at 105/5/5. I have about 70 hours of cpu time available each day and Milkyway only runs GPU jobs. From that I assume that Seti should get on average about 3 hours or so cpu time each day over a few days. Its been running for months now so everything should have settled down.

So why does Seti get NO cpu time for the 3 weeks its been waiting, then runs 1 job only. There are another 29 (each 2.25 hours) jobs waiting to run and they also have been waiting for 3 weeks.

What's going on !!!

Looking at your tasks at Milkyway and Einstein shows only enough tasks for less than 4 hours, the amount of tasks you have for Seti is unknown with their task list disabled,
Where did you set your 1 + 2 days cache settings? was it at one of the Projects? or in Boinc Manager?, Note that the Boinc Manager local preferences over-ride the Web Preferences, and you could only be running a couple of hours cache,
Post your Boinc startup messages from the Event Log, then try clearing your local preferences, and see if Boinc 6.12.34 asks for more work.

---------------------

SETI often doesn't have any work available. Today SETI has provided just enough work to last until network access is enabled. No Einstein and very few Milkway tasks.

Local (for this computer) settings are:
Connect about every 0 days - Additional work buffer 2 days.
The web settings are:
Connect about every 1 days - Additional work buffer 2 days.

Hmmm. Is that the problem ?

Can we have links to the host at Einstein, Milkyway, and SETI please,

What are your cache settings?, it it CPU tasks that your out of?, or Nvidia GPU tasks? or ATI GPU tasks?, any special project preferences set at any of those projects?

Claggy

Sorry to be thick but I don't understand what you mean by 'links to the host'.

I only run CPU tasks. Any settings I have set are just the ones available on the standard web pages. I haven't touched any xml files. I only allow access to the internet from 00:00 to 08:00 as I don't get charged during those hours. The PC is up and running 24 hours.

I do have a lowly GTS430 but all the GPU tasks provoke a W7 bugcheck every few days because of W7's TDR checks so I don't run GPU tasks. Just FYI the GPU doesn't overheat, it isn't overclocked and it survives various stress tests quite happily.

For Example this is my main host at Seti and Einstein (I'm not attached to Milkyway):

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5427475

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2542754

at Einstein i can see what work you were last asking for, here i was only asking for CPU work (I've got Nvidia GPU work fetch disabled in my project preferences there):

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/host_sched_logs/2542/2542754

Because you're only allowing downloads for 8 hours a day, you should have a cache setting of at least 1 day, 2 days would be better, any less than 0.66 cache will mean you'll run out of work before you're next allowing downloads,

Cache request settings - these have been set for many weeks.

Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for (max 10 days). 1 days
Maintain additional tasks to keep busy for up to 2 days

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/show_user.php?userid=188728
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=9631630

The processor is an Intel Core i5 Quad 2500K overclocked to 4.3GHz. 4 Cores but BOINC usage set at 75% (so 3 cores used).

Its late now (23:25) so I'll see any reply tomorrow. Thanks for your interest and help.

Your computers are hidden at each project, i can't see what tasks you have on each host at each project.

Ooops. Fixed now.

Also each project has a resource share of 100.

I run 3 projects on BOINC - Einstein, Milkyway, and SETI. Yet my PC will be sitting here for over 9 hours with no WU to process. Looking at the Event Log a request to Einstein says I don't want any more tasks despite the fact I didn't have any, Milkyway said my PC was full up with tasks, and SETI doesn't have enough tasks to send anyway.

There is something wrong with the scheduling process.

I just find it mildly frustrating to be in a position to volunteer time and money yet have it apparently spurned as this sort of problem occurs not infrequently.

There must be a lot of wasted power out there because of this type of problem. Hopefully it may sometime perhaps be fixed in the near future.
