Hello,
I am about to attempt to set up an HTTP proxy, Squid, for the LHC@home project's VM tasks.
LHC is already set to receive no new tasks and I'm letting all current tasks complete.
I've searched the forums but I'm still a little uncertain about what happens to a project when I subject it to a "Reset project" command. I understand that it cleans out my local files for the project, which are all subsequently reacquired afresh. But what about my hard earned statistics? Are they stored safely by the project servers? And after a "Reset project" command; will my BOINC client's "Statistics" tab also reacquire and display the history of my cherished recent endeavours?
Thank you very much.

OK. That worked. Thanks!
I did a "repair" install over the existing and the new client is registering OK.
The reason I upgraded was to try and clear an LHC@home problem with "CMS Simulation 70.20" workunits. VirtualBox was not working and reporting an error when I tried to investigate... (I'm not an expert, by the way!)
The problem has now gone and the LHC workunits are processing correctly!
I can now access VirtualBox and see the running LHC tasks running. Done and dusted.
Thanks Richard!

P.S.
I'm curious: Please; if I had chosen to "remove" and reinstall, would that have deleted the existing workunits?
Thanks again.

Hello,
I want to install the latest BOINC - (boinc_7.20.2_windows_x86_64_vbox.exe).
I have an existing install - (boinc_7.16.20_windows_x86_64_vbox.exe) with a few days of workunits (Einstein) cached locally.
Will the work units all be discarded?
Thanks.

OK. That all seems good!

3 tasks were running on the i3-4130.
And all re-started with the new i7-4790K fitted -
Elapsed~
03:27:00 Gamma-ray pulsar binary search #1 on GPUs 1.22 (FGRPopencl1K-nvidia)
10:14:00 Multi-Directional Gravitational Wave search on O3 (CPU) 1.02 (GW-SSE2)
03:06:00 Gamma-ray pulsar binary search #1 on GPUs 1.22 (FGRPopencl-intel_gpu)
I suppose it remains to be seen if they validate...

A point of note is that the i7-4790K CPU running flat out (but not Turbo), including the IGPU, oscillates over ~10s between 80-90 °C with the old i3 stock heat sink and fan. I guess that'll change on a hot day though. It draws about 77-88 W. The old i3-4130 was steady at around 55 °C and drew around 40 W.

When I'm not gaming or surfing I give the PC over to BOINC at about a 40/60 split during a 24hr period. The i3 , including the iGPU and nVidia GTX 650 turned over about 28,000 (Einstein) a day. We'll see about that... ;-)

It's odd that when I first booted with the i7, leaving both the Turbo and Hyperthreading off in BIOS (careful now), it ran hotter than with Hyperthreading later on. And the i7-4790K seems to use less RAM than the i3-4130 under general use. Weird. But nice. It might be the enormous 8MB L3 cache...

Thanks for the support and encouragement during this potentially terrifying ordeal. Needed it.

Thanks Richard.
Only one of my two active projects has workunits at the mo - Einstein. I set both projects to "Won't get new tasks" early yesterday.
It's rotten luck but it just so happens there's a huge 24 hour Einstein WU in progress with 15 hours left! LOL Of course I should have suspended the cached tasks.
I wonder if they'd mind too much if I aborted all 3 running processes? Oh dear :-(
Thanks for the broad coverage of your advice.
And in light of further replies -
In the spirit of curiosity I think I'll put a theory to the test by changing the CPU from an i3 to an i7 without aborting anything and seeing what happens just for the sake of it...
Thanks all. I may be some time - but I hope not! ;-)

PS. Cooling? I'll keep an eye on it...

Will a different CPU accept the existing tasks?
Everything else in the box is the same, I'm just upgrading the CPU.
Existing:
i3-4130 (Gen 4)
New:
i7-4790K (Gen 4)
I've tried to let the WU's run out gracefully but everything arrived from eBay much quicker than anticipated and I've still got about 5 days worth of workunits to process... I don't want to abort any tasks if I can possibly avoid it. Can I keep them while I upgrade the CPU?
Thanks.

I thought Use Clusters!

Holy Grail?

So you have two machines each one a dual booter.

If you have a cluster master node (third machine) set up to BOINC in a way that it serves the SciApp to a machine over the LAN where it boots as if it were another processor in a multicore system.

Transparent would be the OS on the client box.

When the process shuts down the partial result is already on the master node physical volume and available for reassignment and the SciApp just evaporates.

Huh? Why not?

While you're there - what's the problem with root? Just a security issue?

Yes. It's standard in *nix to run as a regular user and only go to the root account when needed.

It's a good idea to adopt these security habits. But it's all very well su'ing in an xterm and then finding the GUI doesn't (by default?) permit you too.

Is 'Adminstrator' login for windows a similarly risky way?

Yes. But there are programs that tend to not play nice with unprivileged accounts, and the default in version before Vista is an administrator account. So most people use one. That's why it tends to be so easy for malware to wreck so much havoc in Windows.

Mark one positive point for Vista.

On both my Linux boxes, I changed the root desktop to bright red so I don't forget that's how I logged in. And I changed the styling of the shell as well so I don't forget I opened a root shell.

I'm with Fedora 8 at the moment. It's very usr friendly but I think suse is more so.

That's all very illuminating. Thanks KSMP

You aren't running BOINC as root, are you??

Hey, no. That's UnxUtils.zip with some command line exe's for MSDOS.

OK. So its working again...
Kind of...
I followed the instructions as described in Message 16293 (thanks Greg) and presto - no crash. The message came through that lhchome was serving so back goes the /lhcathome.cern.ch_lhcathome folder into /projects. Now lhc is phoning home but the work units are not listed in the Tasks tab of the manager and not crunching. Do I need to delete something in here? Or where?
There are three unzipped files, only the last one has a non zero length.

[quote]To get past the crashing, edit the client_state.xml file, scroll all the way down and edit the network option to show <user_network_request>3</user_network_request>

That means you suspended network activity.

Do know that this means none of your projects will upload, download or report work.

Jord,
So will this edit wipe out completed tasks? Or just stop communication?

Oh no it doesn't! Wow. I'm not going anywhere near it. I'm just going to wait.

I can not connect to 'localhost' when boinc manager starts either... Also, there seems to be a long, blanked out password in the Connect to Computer dialogue too.

My CPID is the same for the three projects I am involved with. Is there an error on My Account page at BOINC? It has a different CPID. They used to be the same - I made a note.

What is wrong at LHC??
