One word ---> LOL! yeah, I know... funny, how there is no place on the net where we can put our collective mental disorders behind us, and just get along on some good topic =) EDIT: when I was contributing the most, my power bill was like 35$/month higher then usual... that is 420$/year just for crunching, and my rig was not even that elite... For a 3 year period that is 800$ (gear) + 1260$ power = 2060$ for upper medium gear... now, assume 500 crunchers: 500*2060=1.030.000$ in case of 24/7 contribution... 1 million dollars contributed by 500 crunchers over 3 years... SOME ADDITIONAL STATS :D (not atypical numbers) GPUGRID: Short runs (2-3 hours on fastest card) 572 users Long runs (8-12 hours on fastest card) 484 users POEM: POEM++ (cpu work units) 1,880 users POEM++ OpenCL 315 users so, assume 35$ more in power bill for 500 + 1800 users, and 3 years: 2300*35$*12*3=2.898.000$ power bill for medium hardware... |

I personally feel that my equipment is no longer wanted or needed in the Boinc projects YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT !!!!! Credit is meant to be in proportion to the DRYSTONE/WHETSTONE rate of a device... The actual indisputable truth is that the GPU:s are a LOT faster then CPU:s, and that is why they get more credit... THIS IS SCIENTIFICALLY INDISPUTABLE!!! TOOLS GET OBSOLETE!!!! The problem with Bitcoin Utopia is that ELECTRICITY AND GEAR cost me and others a lot more than those morons gather... And yet, they get the most RESPECT AND RECOGNITION in terms of credits. If any projects get the funds from them, I still do not think that THEY CAN AFFORD 1000 HIGH END GPU WORKSTATIONS EVERY THIRD YEAR AND THE ELECTRICITY BILL THAT COMES WITH IT!!! |

Shrug. It's not as if the credits are worth anything, so until they do, it doesn't really matter to the powers that be. Funny, how it went from "measuring" contributed flops to meaning nothing :D Anyways, as Retvari Zoltan says on gpugrid: http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=3796&nowrap=true#37766
and also http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=3796&nowrap=true#37782
I would like to propose myself for handling ur money, plz plz plz donate /With Luv, kind stranger (I keep 25%, have many cats to feed) |

A bit offtopic, but is this the same Martin who was connected to QuantumFire? As in your post http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6284&postid=37773#37773... hmm, any news on that? thanks |

Message 43095 Posted 17 Mar 2012 by hangya2 |
nonono, I use kingston ECC memory, also me and computer brush teeth together and such, so no dust :) (only the boinc gui froze for a time)
I run POEM and WCG. POEM did no seem to have many problems, but WCG did, alas, I do not know how to hardlink to my WU:s in the WCG account. Many WU:s for WCG ended with computation error, and some of the subprojects had so many download errors lately, that barely any WU:s finished. But, here is an unbelievable situation, I just found out about it. The realtek network driver used by default in Ubuntu 11.10 (and some other) linux distros is faulty; i had to downgrade to an older version... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1865436&page=3 some quotes from that thread:
Soooo, if the developers feel bored, and want to replicate my problems, just get hold of any board with realtek network adapter and driver r8169, and start crunching :D |

Message 43083 Posted 17 Mar 2012 by hangya2 |
I was running BOINC 7.xx, but this is true for any version. For some reason, the internet connectione in my area has disturbances from now and then; the connection times out often, and there are short outages. In these situations the boinc client starts the WU:s, runs them for some time, then ends with "computation error". If i try to click on any button under one of these "outages", a message window says something on the lines of "communicating with the boinc client", and everything just freezez for some time. And then there may or may not be computation error. These last weeks, many many hours of work has been wasted in computation error. Some time ago, more than 200 days, it was pointed out to me that this was a known bug, that may require redesign of the "heartbeat" of BOINC or whatnot... Are there plans to fix this? (ps. english is my third language out of five, so do not complain, I am not Shakespeare :) ) |

well, i apologize for the hurt feelings I seem to cause... let me explain: i have never lived in a country where i spoke my native language, thus i can "fluently" speak 3 and understand 2 more... i can not understand how the sentence "dude, i am educated, dont pull rethorics on me :D" can hurt anyone; it is just a phrase, intended as a pun; while true, it also holds a contradiction... it does not imply my superiority, nor does it imply that you are a "dude". i simply felt that, while i know, dimmly, of some usages of number theory, i still find your view of the field optimistic, in contrast to our more immediate needs - and that is the topic of this thread. i can not delete this account, so I ask the moderator AGELESS to ban me, but as long as i am cited, i will attempt to clarify... as a side note, the word "crap", that i used in a post below to describe the collatz project, does not hold such a derogatory meaning, as it seems to in english, in any other language i know of... |

"Science, technology and engineering rely heavily on math. Prime numbers are a part of math and we have no idea where research into primes will take us and what it might enable us to do." dude, i am educated, dont pull rethorics on me :D point is, the way i see it, that the ratio of resources for number_theory+astronomy vs more mundane sciences do indicate a waste... "If we allow population to grow to the point where all our forest are gone and all land dwelling species are gone and the land is covered from sea to sea with people standing shoulder to shoulder..." - endless breeding is not the probable way... the number of descendants do not increase as function of longevity and quality_of_life, or am i missing something? look at sweden, or some other developed european countries, where the immigrants make up the population increase... also russia, romania, hungary where the population is declining lalely... seems to me, tha people who breed the most are: religious: no condoms and such disaster areas: africa cultural problems: china, india... we need science and technology to more efficiently fix problems that we meet or cause... also, assume we are contacted and are asked for help by aliens: aliens: comrades, we have a pain in our venerable a**** we: well, let uss show u these prime numbers, now... |

the thoughts on humanity is a respons to Dagorath, below. "There's a lot of different ways to look at that. Some people think there's too damn many people on the planet already and that if we continue to mitigate natural population checks (by keeping people alive longer) we'll wipe out all the other species which will wipe us out too." we are, we consume, we pollute, wipe out species and so forth... only technology will get us out of this. prime numbers will probably help, but will not be a principal component of our solutions, i feel... or not? |

let me cite Hamming "The purpose of computing is insight, not numbers." (i am an EE dropout, with some math background) yes, resources are wasted, especially on projects connected to number theory... my own point is that if there will be a need for a large prime number, say, with 14839793256739 digits, the computers will be more efficient in that time, so it will take a fraction of the energy wasted today to get thet result... as an other exemple, take the collatz project... it may be that i have missunderstood the project, but having a large amount of positive results is not proof of the theorem, so why waste megawatts on this kind of crap? where is the insight? astronomical projects fail in my own eyes for several reasons... one is that I do not see that the insights, if any at all, we get by all the computations are deeper than what scientist say with help of telescopes... projects i personally consider worthy are those that study structural problems that may leed to new theory or usable applications, such as protein folding and solid state physics in general... as for humanity, i think like this: if a species comes over a certain intellectual treshold, so that it can explicitly model and eventually modify itself and its environment, it steps outside of evolution and, in some sense*, ouside nature... i also think that the only thing that will slow the negative effects is knowledge, science and technology... the faster we get out of the shit we stand in, the better... |
