1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Feature request (Message 39982)

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible, or worthwhile, to add a feature that would show how much work is in the task list? I'm thinking of something that would show the number of tasks and total estimated hours remaining.

I'm not sure those settings can actually be used to control the crunching time as desired. 17:00 to 07:00 crosses midnight into a different day. It looks as if two separate settings would be needed, one from 00:00 to 07:00, and another from 17:00 to 00:00.

I believe that the problem may be due to the later time (17:00) appearing before the earlier time (07:00). Here's my theory... (anyone from the BOINC development team, feel free to slap my knuckles if I'm wrong! :-) )...

Where the later time is specified first, BOINC interprets that to mean 'run from midnight until 17:00'. Then the earlier time appears next, which BOINC interprets to mean 'run from 07:00 until midnight'. The end result being to run continuously with no restrictions.

It almost sounds like the developers might want to consider a checkbox next to the time, allowing users to select whether to run, or suspend, during the selected hours?? That way, a user could elect to suspend between 07:00 and 17:00.

Post:
For some tasks from some projects the completion time will count up when the task is running. Don't worry about it. I've never seen completion time change when a task is suspended. Are you sure about that? You should ask about that at the appropriate project as that's their "problem" not BOINC's problem.

I didn't think it was anything to lose sleep over, just had to ask - the devil made me do it! :-)

To clarify one point with the completion time changing while suspended, maybe I didn't state what I was seeing correctly. I didn't mean while the task is suspended, but when it is 'waiting to run'. And the time doesn't change while waiting, it's just... different?

For example, I receive a WU with a 30 hour estimated completion time. I have the default swap time between tasks set at 60 minutes. So, this WU starts running, but, the time to complete counts UP, not down. At the end of it's allotted 60 minute time slot it shows 31 hours remaining, with 1 hour elapsed, for a total of 32 hours for the 30 hour WU.

Now, it gets placed in the 'waiting' queue, where it shows 29 hours remaining with 1 hour elapsed, for a total of 30 hours for a 10 hour WU. That's what I would expect to see.

When it gets processor time again, it once again shows the remaining time counting up instead of down. At the end of the second processing run, it shows 30 hours remaining, 2 hours elapsed, for a total of 32 hours again. When it ends up in the waiting queue this time, it show 2 hours elapsed, 28 hours remaining, for a total of 30 hours again.

It continues counting the remaining time the wrong way until some threshold is reached, which, unfortunately, I haven't been able to see while it's happening. I beleive it's somewhere around 8 to 12 hours or thereabouts. I've noticed this behavior on long WU's from Docking, QMC, SETI Astropulse, Einstein, etc. It's happened on several WU's from several projects, on several platforms.

I have a couple of old computers (the dinosaurs) running BM 6.6.8, which don't show this behavior, while the newer computers, running BM 6.12.33 do. because of that, I thought it might be related to something in BOINC Manager.

i hope that cleared things up a little.

I have a general question concerning how BOINC manager (6.12.33) displays the time to completion for running tasks. I'm not sure if this is related to BOINC manager, or the specific WU's, so I thought I'd start here. :-)

I've noticed that the time to completion on longer tasks - 10 hours or more - increases as the task is running. This doesn't affect all tasks from all projects, it seems to be random. And, I haven't sat down and looked very closely too see which projects or task this occurs on. And before I forget, the estimated completion time does go down when the task is waiting to run, but then begins counting up again when processing.

I do understand one important word regarding the time to complete - estimated. Out of curiosity, is what I'm seeing something that needs to be corrected, or should I just sit back, go back to sleep, and enjoy crunching numbers for science?

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post! Being a hobby style programmer, not professional by any means, I understand the magnitude of a project the size of BOINC, and getting everything to run smoothly. I have a few ideas that hopefully may be helpful, but as you are aware, putting thoughts on paper can be a traumatic experience at times. :-) Anyways...

[quote]It would seem to me that if the team information was being used to create the account, then the team password would be used?

They can't do that as not only is the import done over unsecured channels, the actual file can even be read by people who merely go to BWT and download it, which is why the advice is to use an email address that isn't your main email address, in case of spammers. Plus this file is afterwards quite regularly imported again by the projects using it, to make sure newer additions are added and changes you may have made to your team advert through BWT are imported.

No passwords are hurt by sending them unprepared to the projects.

2 - Provide some authenticator to he team founder that can be used as a substitute for the email address for situations like this

One authenticator for all projects? Not very secure. Besides, you're probably dealing with a spam filter. Check in there first.

One authenticator for all accounts, the same thing as the CPID at BOINCStats that accesses user information on all of that users accounts. For the spam filter:

Nothing from AQUA or FreeHAL. I've been making two or three 'lost password' requests per day since July 16 with no response from them.

I'm still trying to properly digest the information you provided on the other issues. After I get to recover from a hard day at work, a headache, and grandkids being loud, I'll try to gather my thoughts and try to continue.

Thanks again!

I have the same problem with ALL accounts that were crested when my team was imported. It would seem to me that if the team information was being used to create the account, then the team password would be used? Two projects - AQUA and FreeHAL, aren't returning the email from the 'lost password' link, so I'm effectively locked out of those projects forever.

If I can make a few suggestions,

1 - Don't allow the project server to automatically create a user account,

2 - Provide some authenticator to he team founder that can be used as a substitute for the email address for situations like this,

3 - Provide an option on the BOINC-wide team website to NOT automatically create accounts,

4 - Provide an option on the BOINC-wide team website to 'Use this password for automatically created accounts',

5 - Provide the option to delete accounts where the team founder has not yet attached to the project.

It's a little less than encouraging to find that you can't log into an account on a project that you've never attached to because an account was created in your name with a mystery password.

What can be done about these automatically created accounts that I can't access?
9) Message boards : Questions and problems : No account XML file created (Message 39246)

Post:
I have an interesting problem that occurred when attaching to new projects... the project never sent (or BOINC manager never created) an account XML file for the project. This has happened on two computers running two different versions of BOINC. My older computer is running BOUNC 6.8.??, and the newer laptop is running BOINC 6.12.33. I have 5 computers running BOINC, 4 of them on the latest version. Each one has between 4 and 8 projects running, so attaching to a project isn't any problem. BTW, my oldest one started running SETI classic way back when, and is now running SETI under BOINC.

OK, here's what happened...

On my old computer (BOINC 6.8.??) I tried to attach to Enigma@home. This was a new account, so I entered my email, and my password twice. That's as far as I got. The projects list doesn't show Enigma@home, and there were no file transfers at all. I tried to log onto Enigma and see what was in my account, but it tells me that my password is incorrect. I tried several different spellings for the password, but no success.

I checked the forums here, and found the one explaining how to log onto a project account if you forgot your password. That sounded close to my problem, so I tried it. I discovered that no XML file wexists for Enigma, so I can't take the authenticator from it. I'm effectively locked out of my project account.

Today, I tried to attach to eOn on one of my laptops, and had the same thing happen. No download, no error message, no XML file. I'm locked out of that one also.

Any suggestions on how to log onto the projects and hopefully attach to them?
