If you hold down the "shift" key and select a link, it will open a whole new browser window. Then from the task bar you can switch between windows to reference either page. OR you can press "Cntrl and N" key at the same time and it will open a new browser window that you can use to search and still have the original window open.

Seti has been down at certain times over the last few days. If you give us which error message you're getting, we might know what to say.

Which projects work is taking much longer than expected?

The "connect to" interval is really asking "how many days worth of work would you like to have on hand until you plan to dial back up again?". It isn't really what it might appear. It's not "please dial up every so often".

does this help?

63) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Communication Deferred 24hours (Message 3674)
Posted 28 Mar 2006 by mmciastro
Post:

Yeah, actually the Rosetta job finished on the first computer and says "Ready to report", but for some weird reason it's gone into a 3-hour "Communication Deferred" thing and won't attempt to communicate until then.

Uploading and Reporting are two different things, and require different actions on the projects side of things. When a WU/result finishes it's uploaded immediately. Work is reported based upon a calculation you can find in the wiki. Basically, it allows several wus to be reported at once, rather than one at a time. Uploads to seti go directly to the UL fileserver, while reporting requires communication with several servers and is for that reason, hard on the already overstressed servers. This delay in reporting was intentional.
This all seems highly inefficient, and if I have to sit around managing it I'll just remove the damned thing. The old SETI@home interface seemed to work really well compared to this. The second computer is still in the midst of its whopping 24-hour "Communication Deferred" wait.

Boinc V4.49 huh? Hmmmm, that was a "developmental release" as was 4.46, 4.47, 4.48, 4.70 used by Rom Walton, myself, and Heffed to test out dial up problems. I'm not sure where you got that one, but the lastest is 5.2.13. Maybe you could install 5.2.13 over the top of that one and see if it changes. I don't remember what you described happening when I ran it, but then Rom was spitting them out fast, and we sometimes didn't even get to complete a test before he came out with a new one. You probably won't be able to control the dial up through the lan (atleast I don't know how).

If you want to try 5.2.13 click here and it should open a prompt allowing you to run/save it.

hope this helps

Aarne, go to the projects website, create a password, then use the "use existing account" option instead of "create account", then use the URL and password (not key) when attaching.

Hi Norman, did you download a version of Boinc and install it? If so, at the should be a menu item that let's you pick the "attach to projects" option. Click on this and follow the screens. If you're a returning user from seti classic did you activate the account they made for you, or create a new one. If you activated the one they made then you will see your classic credits in your account.

The Wiki has much help in this.

Remove boinc from the laptop, or service it to remove the dust bunnies and replace thermal compound. I've had 5 different laptops attached over the years and if yours is that close to "failure", then save it by reducing the load or clean it. My new or clean laptops have no issues running boinc. The 100% load placed upon them will hasten it's demise unless properly maintained.

you could google "threadmaster" and reduce the cpu useage.

When installing boinc, you're prompted with three options; "single user", "shared user", and "service". Sounds like you picked "single user". It only works when the one user is logged on, Shared user may be more to your liking. Also, "Run as service" will mean Boinc runs even if NOONE is logged on.

does this help?

Point your cursor over the B in the systray, right click, do you have "run based upon preferences" selected? To be honest I've never configured it to run the way you want, but it's supposed to be possible. I'm just guessing now. Seems like you'll just have to play with it. Remember to do a Project Update, each time you make a change to the website preferences so the client can talk to the server and see the changes.

Boinc consist of 3 parts: the manager, the daemon, and the science application. You really don't need the manager except to make changes and keep an eye on it. The daemon does the management of the projects, and the project is where the actual crunching is done.

When boinc loads you can click the Red X in the upper right and the manager will close leaving the daemon running. To exit boinc entirely you need to do a "file" "exit".

I'm NOT familiar with Linux, but it sounds like a port problem. check to see if ports 80, 1043 and 31416 are useable by boinc. That's about as much help as I can offer.

Thanks. I didn't think that there was, but you don't know if you don't ask.

Hint to the developers... Please add this feature!

I hear you

So, If I understand you properly, you just want a Boinc Screensaver and don't want boinc, or to run projects under boinc? I'm not sure if a stand alone boinc screensaver has been made. It might have, I'm just unaware of one. When boinc has no projects running or a project with no graphics, it displays the moving "Boinc". When a project that has graphics is running, it displays the graphics for that project. Each projects graphic prefs can be adjusted within "your account" "project preferences".

I guess, I'm guessing as to what you really want.

Well, you could Uncheck the "make boinc the default screensaver" when you installed boinc. You can use add/remove programs to uninstall then reinstall picking a different option. You should lose NO work. Or you could go to the display part of the control panel and remove it from the list. If you want the screen saver you can adjust the seti specific preferences under "your account", do a project update, then change the command menu from "run always" to "run based upon preferences"

Define Abend with more details so I can make a suggestion.

OK, I've seen 11 views of this post but noone has tackled it yet.

Inside the client side boinc there is a scheduler/daemon (boinc.exe). It's purpose it to figure out what to run, when to run it, for how long to run it, how much work to get, when to get work or not, to upload finished results and to report uploaded work. It counts resource share by run time and figures out what needs to run next. There is a "long term debt" (LTD), Short term debt (STD), and a "work fetch policy". If you click on the "Wiki" link over my signature you can do a search for those terms. My guess (without actually being in front of your puter) is that you've either run seti and PPAH alot and need to payback CPDN with run tiime, or the CPDN deadline is looming (based upon certain criterion) and it's running exclusively CPDN to ensure a deadline isn't missed. By examining the STD and LTD and other factors you can figure out why it's happening.

Boinc.exe must be running for the screensaver to work. Boinc controls which projects screensaver to run when. You can uninstall/reinstall boinc and select "do not load at start up" if you wish to stop it from doing so.

does this help?

There is an expotential back off to keep hosts from hammering the servers during and after a server outage. You can get around this by manually updating the project. Go to the projects tab, point the mouse at the project in question and highlight it by left clicking the mouse on it (right hand box), then click the "update" button on the left.

have you set up your "general preferences", and also set up your dial up connection under the "options" file menu on the manager?

these are the pertainent General Prefs:

Network usage
Confirm before connecting to Internet?
(matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no
Disconnect when done?
(matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no
Maximum download rate: 200 KB/s
Maximum upload rate: 200 KB/s

note: you'll have to update the project that you changed the preferences under for them to take affect.

note, read the wording of the preferences carefully. Also, when you do the update from the "projects" page, make sure you click on the "rosettta" words in the right hand box until it's highlighted, before clicking "update". Then look under your message tab to see if it took.

heres' what mine looks like:

Disk and memory usage
Use no more than 400 GB disk space
Leave at least
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) .25 GB disk space free
Use no more than 85% of total disk space

Following my previous post and query instead of opening a command window I tried executing boinc directly from the Start>run command with the redirectio parameter. This time when I closed out the command window that opened, boinc manager remained connected.

Again does anybody know the progress or timeline of a fix.

If you've read my previous posts, you'd know why it's doing what it's doing and how to fix it (as long as you accept the problems that come with developmental client). A new developmental version is on it's way. Noone knows when this developmental branch will be mature enough to release as official.

80) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC doesn't switch between projects (Message 3117)
Posted 16 Feb 2006 by mmciastro
Post:
There is two modes boinc runs in: RR (round robin), and EDF (earliest deadline first). As long as the scheduler doesn't suspect (via different criterion) that it's possible a deadline will be missed,it will run in RR. If it suspects a deadline might possibly be missed, it'll run in EDF. Some view EDF as a "fault" mode, but it's not. It's just another way to do the work.

In RR it'll switch between projects as defined by its programming. In EDF it'll do them by Deadline date. Either way it'll follow your requested resource share. It just takes longer to balance in EDF.

Please look up EDF, Round Robin, and Work Fetch in the wiki. See link above my signature.

hope this helps
