Just wondering...Did they change the connection port after between 4.x and 5.x?

Short answer is yes, detailed answer is port was really changed between 5.2.15 and 5.3.something. What did change between 4 and 5 was the use of libcurl proxy authentification.

If you're a windows user, make sure boinc.scr is listed under "internet access" of your firewall. It needs comms to work. When I install a new version of boinc, i'm prompted twice by mcafee, once for boinc.mgr, and once for boinc.exe. Then I have to go to "start" "control panel", then "display", then click on the "screensaver" tab. Once I click screensaver, then mcafee prompts me for boinc.scr access.

The work cache setting is "total" work, not per project. The work scheduler decides what to run and when based upon a formula using your resource share and connect to setting.

Before you leave set it to 8 days and update.

It's pretty simple after you learn to relax and trust that the work scheduler will balance you project per your requested amounts, and you don't have to babysit it. right now you seem nervous about whether it will work and are watching it closely. we all did that. relax, kick back, grab a cold one. It works.

enjoy

I've created a thread called "Connecting from Italy" and posted this:

I have a user at the Boinc message board. His username is "darkpella" and here is a link to that thread. He can't attach to PPAH, or even get here with a browser. Can someone help him?

tony

over at ppah, There is a link to this thread.

{edit} this was the first post to their boards in 3 days, so I wouldn't expect an immediate response. LOL

I, too, have had this problem since the end of the previous month; however, no amount of rebooting allows boinc manager to connect to local host. No work has been done since. (I am away most of the week as a truck driver and that is the reason I signed up for this silly prject.)

Jay, if you're a windows user click here and try this version of boinc.

may the coops always be closed for you, driver.

% of time BOINC client is running 99.0415%
While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed 99.7311%
Average CPU efficiency 0.999976
Result duration correction factor 5.824106 <---- ???

Have fun, as they say.

Ah, but the problem is the processing speed. When you first connected the DCF was set to 1.000000 since it hadn't had any work to learn from. The duration correction factor is adjusted AFTER work has been done. Each time you turn a wu in it compares the cpu time to the "estimated cpu time". If the cpu time of a recently computed wu is less than estimated, it will take off something like 10% of the difference. When it's over, the estimate is immediately increased to that value. Evidently you returned a wu that took 90 hours. What processor is this? PII 400???, my P3-500 did them in 20 hours. I notice your 128 M ram and that makes a difference as well. You tell me the estimate is 90 hours and the DCF is 5.82406, if I divide 90 by 5.82410 I come up with 15.45 hours or so. This 15.45 hours is what it thought it should take originally when it issued work to you.

you say you got 11 wus (11 wu * 15.45hours= 169.95 hours (or 7 days worth of work). What is your "connect to" (cache) setting set for?

After it did a wu it sees it really takes 90 and yes it has too much work. I would abort the ones that can't be done in time. The newly corrected DCF will limit your downloaded work for the next time (depending on your requested cache setting).

Don't worry, be happy

morning, I might be able to. Uploads at Seti seems down at the moment. If you visit the Seti website, and go to the message boards (number crunching) you'll see many threads of users having difficulty with this. Right now you're posting to the "Boinc" message boards. Boinc is the multi project platform on which all other project run.

you can find the seti message boards here at http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_index.php.

56) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Not Enough Disk Space and Default ISP settings (Message 3706)
Posted 30 Mar 2006 by mmciastro
Post:
If you go to "your account" then "general preferences" you see these preferences(these are a copy of mine):

Disk and memory usage
Use no more than 400 GB disk space
Leave at least
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) .25 GB disk space free
Use no more than 85% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 600 seconds
Use no more than 100% of total virtual memory

Boinc will use no more than it needs. These setting are really relics of a distant past when disk space was limited (I.E 2 gig drives, or mp3 servers LOL). I don't own a 400 GB drive, so basically the above setting says "use all you want, but leave me .25 GB free)

you should check yours.

After changing preferences on the web you'll need to contact that site with your client for changes to take effect. Click "projects" tab, then highlight the project where you just changed the settings, and then click "update" button on left side.

hope this helps

If you go to the predictor website, log in, go to "your account", then "computers-view" then pick the particular computer your talking about. On that screen what values do you have under the following catagories (note the following is what is on my page and I've deleted things which can't help me figure out your issue):

CPU type AuthenticAMD
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+
Number of CPUs 1
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00)
Memory 1023.48 MB
Cache 976.56 KB
Swap space 2462.1 MB
Total disk space 19.53 GB
Free Disk Space 1.29 GB
Average turnaround time 3.15 days

% of time BOINC client is running 99.4013 %
While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed 99.9799 %
Average CPU efficiency 0.982674
Result duration correction factor 0.397798

I'm especially interested in the bold parts.

58) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Work Unit Download Problems with SETI and Einstien (Message 3702)
Posted 29 Mar 2006 by mmciastro
Post:
The work scheduler thinks it needs more seti to balance out your requested "resource share", so it's only requesting work from seti. Since seti isn't giving work, it just keeps requesting it, while finishing your existing cache of work. When you're actually out of work, it will get work from any attached project it can (so it'll keep busy). It always tries to balance the resource share, where that doesn't affect deadlines, of course.

What you're seeing is normal activity.

I believe the problem you are experiencing is that your port 1043 is in use by another program. ICANN has registered that port to Boinc, but MS has used it in a program they made. Boinc used 1043 as a "loopback" address so that the manager could communicate with the daemon across networks. Boinc has switched to port 31416 in the newer developmental clients.

computers this apply to will say "disconnected" on the very bottom bar (right hand side) of the Boinc manager. it should read (in most instances) "connected to localhost".

are you experiencing this issue?
