21) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Work Unit Download Problems with SETI and Einstien (Message 4105)

Post:
go to projects page, suspend seti, this should cause other projects to fill the queue. Then unsuspend seti after the new work has been downloaded. Warning, this may give you more work than you can finish on time.

When the problems occur does it say "connected to localhost", or "disconnected" on the very bottom bar of the boinc manager???
23) Message boards : BOINC Manager : An option to run only open source project ? (Message 4045)
Posted 23 Apr 2006 by mmciastro
Post:
Opening the source can be detrimental. It would allow others to change the application files. This can be a good or bad thing. For example, A project may need control over the manner the answer is returned. It may require accuracy to a specific digit past the decimal, but optimizers might alter it, thereby ruining the science. This is but one example. Maybe a project has the need to change the application quickly, on the fly, as the questions change.

Some projects' goals just aren't suited to being open source.

Dr. Anderson submitted this to the mail list:

David Anderson to Jorden, BOINC
More options 2:23 am (4 hours ago)

The reply to a "get projects" GUI RPC
(which the BOINC Manager uses to get info about projects) looks like:

<project>
...
<gui_urls>
<gui_url>
...
</gui_url>
...
</gui_urls>
</project>
<project>
...

When the Manager is parsing a <gui_url> element,
it keeps parsing until it finds the matching </gui_url>.
If this isn't there (as in the Predictor case)
it parses all the way until the end, skipping the
remaining projects, so the Manager doesn't know their names.

I checked in a slightly kludgy fix: if, while parsing a <gui_url>
element, we see </gui_urls>, we break out of the parsing of
both <gui_url> and <gui_urls>.

I am having the same problem. I initially had problems with SETI that several others are having not showing up as an attached project. I saw how to fix that, but in the process I upgraded from 5.2.12 to 5.2.13 and now I can't connect to a BOINC client.

I am currently running 5.2.13 on a Win XP machine. Help?

It's a port conflict that's been fixed in the newer developmental versions. You can download boinc_5.4.4_windows_intelx86.exe by selecting this link. This is for Windows only.

Warning, this is develpmental software, and may contain bugs. Don't blame anyone if bad things happen.

OK now that I've thrown in the standard warning, I haven't had any problems with it and I haven't seen any reports from other alpha members (who test the new releases) that would condemn this version.

So you think we (the users) should use the power/numbers in boinc to launch a DOS (denial of service) attack on someone? Would two wrongs make a right?

This is solely my thoughts and do not represent anyone or any organization.

you could download a decent cache of wus, uninstall norton, disconnect from the web, and find out. Mcafee works for my various vintages of hardware.

Boinczilla is the "official" bug database for reporting bugs. You'll even get a response as to it's dispostion when it's addressed. The people who man this board are volunteers, who like myself, think we can help.

Vincent are you using a standard boinc client? If so, you might try this one out, It's currently the latest developmental release. It seems to run well for everyone (for the most part, small knit picky things excluded), and it uses a different port for comms than older versions. It can't really hurt to try it.

tony

you can always "uninstall" and go back to your present version

I just used windows explorer to find and open a 1762 page book I've been tinkering with. It's an MSWord document. It's on a network drive and took 6 seconds to open.

I'm an Boinc alpha tester and have tried most official and developmental builds, all the while using MS office products. I've never seen what you describe.

[edit]Sata2 drive, AMD64 3700, 1Gig mem

can you describe the problem in more detail?

cpu useage should be at 100 percent, boinc is designed to use ALL unused cpu cycles. I run a celeron 500 with 256 Mram, win98se and it runs OK. I think your problem lies elsewhere.

Congratulations, I've never heard of this before. It's a very unique issue, so I have nothing with which to base any recommendations on.

You should have "Boincmgr.exe" and "Boinc.exe" (and boinc.scr if screensaver is used) listed in your firewall as "internet exceptions". They don't have each project listed seperately, so it shouldn't be a firewall issue.

I've tried to look you up in boincstats so I could learn more about your use of boinc. Is this you? and are did you attach to predictor back on March 11th crunch for 4 days (return results on four days, not consecutive days) as this Jody seems to have done. I could find out a little more if this post were on the seti board (number crunching) instead of here.

Are you a Windows user?
