Many thanks for the helpful answers.

Certainly the there projects seem to be set to 33.3% each.

But cannot edit that setting, at least anywhere I have looked.

Will try again later.

I cannot find a setting anywhere that would allow me to even out the work load across all three projects!

This is running on a Mac mini, hexacore i7.

Hi

This is an issue I have seen for a while!

I am a member of Seti, climate change and Rosetta projects.

In Boinc manager I can see 10 separate running projects at any one time, 1 is Seti, 1 is climate change and 8 are Rosetta!

This seems grossly unfair, how do I change this?

Any idea when it will be fixed?

By the way, this is the Mac link that is broken.

Hi Alan

This is an option I had considered but the built in graphics will not drive an external display, so I cannot permanently set to built in graphics when on battery.

:-(

Hi

If there is anything I can do to help, like testing a beta release to fix this issue.

Please let me know, I am happy to help.

Hi

I do not know how to set the no_gpus thing, I would really like to make use my of GPU's when plugged in, just not when on battery!

Really hope you can come up with a fix!

Regards.

Hi

1. No this is not checked.
2. It was already off.
3. Umm, really do not know what this is, how would I find out?
4. My projects are Seti and Rosetta, I am not sure about the GPU bit.
5. Nothing really helped!

Just to be clear, I have no issue with BOINC using my GPU when my computer is plugged in and BOINC is processing.

The only issue is that, I have unchecked the box that would allow BPOINC to process when on battery, I would then expect BOINC to release the discrete GPU until it starts processing again but gfxCardStatus is clearly indicating it is BOINC and only BOINC that is stopping my computer switching to integrated graphics when I am on battery power.

Indeed quitting BOINC immediately causes the switch to integrated graphics.

I hope some of the above can help.

If there is anything you want me to try, please just ask.

Regards.

Robin

Hi

Thanks for the reply but it does not really answer my question!

I have set the preferences for BOINC to NO COMPUTING WHEN ON BATTERY

But even with this setting in place, BOINC is forcing the discrete GPU to be active, surely if it is not processing it should not be holding the GPU active and thereby draining my battery faster?

Hi

I have a MacBook Retina, which is a lovely machine but battery life is not what I expected.

I run BOINC but this is set to do nothing when on battery, so should not affect battery life.

What I am noticing however, is that if BOINC is active but not running, it is still forcing my GPU to switch to the discrete GPU.

If I exit BOINC my machine immediately switches to integrated GPU and projected battery life gets another hour or two.

Again, this is on battery and BOINC set to not crunch data when on battery.

Any ideas or thoughts, I don't want to have to remember to close BOINC whenever I unplug my laptop!!!!!

Cheers.

Hmmmm

Very interesting to have helped identify a bug HOWEVER, this has not got to the bottom of the problem I had with climatepredition where it was taking a CONSTANT 80% CPU utilisation, not intermittent, not up and down but constant.

Interestingly and confusingly since the problem arose BOINC has not downloaded a single climatepredition task!

The only tasks I now have running are Seti and rosetta although climatepredition is still in the list of projects!

Hmm

Interesting.

It is a Core 2 Duo, the setting I gave are correct, so you are saying nothing should be happening, yet, BOINC is clearly working and taking a chunk of both cores!

Now I understand how BOINC throttles it makes sense why I see peeks and troughs on CPU usage.

EXCEPT under weatherprediction that was constantly taking 80% CPU!

Okay, so maybe I misread.

So to be clear, or should I say, clearer!

As far as Resource Share is concerned it is split evenly between all three projects and rotates every 60 minutes.

This works fine.

CPU however, is set to 'use at most 25% of multiprocessors'

and 'use at most 30% of CPU time'

By the may, this is on a Mac Mini with a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU.

Hi

Thanks for the idea but I don't want to run the fans high, I want to keep BOINC CPU utilisation at a level that contributes to the effort but without generating excess heat and noise from my systems.

Make sense?

Hi

Yes, you are spot on.

If I have told BOINC only to allow 30% CPU utilisation I do not expect any project to take 80%.

Having said that I noticed climateprediction errored with a checksum error I think and has never downloaded a unit since, so the problem has not replicated itself.

Hi

I am currently running 3 projects on BOINC.

On one of my machines the climateprediction project takes 80% CPU and heats up my server significantly (80c plus).

Seti and rosetta when they are running all seem to operate on or around the 30% I have set up and the machine runs at 51c much more reasonable.

This is on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8.

ANY help would be appreciated!

Robin
