21) Message boards : BOINC client : Boinc v7.2.11 for over a month... (Message 50602)

That there were no other test clients out for so long, was because of the need to mature the BOINC for Android client a lot more, while on the other hand the main build system of the build developer had broken down, so he couldn't build a new BOINC even if he had wanted to.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that.
I'll give that build a try.

Any I want to use this opportunity to give my thanks to all developers + the whole BOINC team incl. the web-admins like you for their efforts, too! Needs to be said sometimes.

I was just wondering, the version 7.2.11 has been out there for over a month. As far as I am concerned, it works pretty fine - what you think guys, how about making this version the new recommended version?

Any major flaws known yet?

Ah yes, my specs:
Athlon Phenom II 945 @ 3,0 GHz
2 GB RAM
WinXP SP3

Greetings

Still working good so far. No probs of any kind. :)

A question: Why isn't the actual version in the alpha testing? It is not listed under http://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha . Just thought I should mention that.

As far as I can say, this version works fine so far.

Tested with WCG, POEM@Home and MalariaControl; with CPU and GPU WUs; on a WinXP System (SP4) at an AthlonII X2 260 (yes I upgraded) @ 2 GB RAM.

Nice work guys :)

7.0.28 is out. I'm waiting @ 7.0.27 until I see some posts on if it is better. I will probably wait until the first week of June as I will be out of town later in the week. I'm also going to cutting back to summertime crunching levels; one half of my CPU cores and only at night.

I am crunching on 7.0.28 for weeks now, everything is OK. No problems at all.

@ BOINC Team: How about making 7.0.28 the new default version?

7.0.27 compiles fine on gentoo (stable 64bit) and no noticable hiccups running it so far.

Same here with 7.0.27 on WinXP SP4 (32 bit). Looks really good :)

So why wait now?

I asked for 7.0.26 to be promoted several days ago, but will probably not get an answer on that until after the weekend. It seems the developers are taking their weekends off this year. ;-)

Thanks Ageless

Since there is nowhere feedback to be found for this build, I give some here.

BOINC 7.0.26 works all fine for me; well, with its small and useful changes (from 7.0.25) it should do so ;)

IMHO you should set this build as the "Recommended version". Even more, since it does solve some problems as can be seen here.

The minimum work buffer setting sets the minimum amount of work you're going to request.
The maximum additional work buffer sets the additional days worth of work you want to have.

Not quite. The meaning of the prefs is:

- The client requests work for a given resource when the amount of buffered work falls below min.
- It requests (from the highest-priority project) enough work to bring the amount up to min + additional.

Thank you David for clearing things up.

BTW, is there a resource which explains all of the BOINC options as well as you did with these two? That would be very helpful.

Thanks!

If Boinc 6.12.43 isn't listed on the Download page, very few will use it

Most of the fixes in that version (and the ones before) are for Test4Theory. But since Test4Theory hasn't upgraded their vboxwrapper app yet to work with the bug-fixes in this version, there's no real use for testing it at this time.

OK thanks.

I was wondering if the newer 6.12.xx versions still get tested at all, because at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/test_summary.php the count stops at v6.12.35 and then only the brand-new 6.13.xx versions get tested, and that only by few people it seems....

Mabye somebody could give a short overview about this issue?
Thanks :)

I think you are on the safe side - AFAIK most projects do not take their deathlines strictly but give a bit time to it for exactly those cases.

Sory, I forgot to mention that in my earlier post.

Uploading is just moving data from your hard drive to a hard drive on the server.
Reporting accesses the database, whereby it must be noted that when you report one task that it takes as much overhead on the database server as when you report ten tasks or one hundred tasks. So projects and BOINC prefer it if you report tasks in bunches, to keep things nice and tidy.

The RRI option is there to allow reports to be done immediately on projects like WCG which make daily backups of their data. That way you have a good chance that your reported tasks were in before the backup.

Other projects don't like RRI that much. Einstein and CPDN have been reported as disliking RRI, whereby you can lose data.

So use at your own discretion.

Thanks Ageless, that really cleared things up.

That sucks. Use the report_tasks_immediately option in a cc_config.xml file.

That is a good issue to speak of - I never understood what the reporting feature does. Maybe someone can explain this to me, because I always took it that when results are uploaded the project is notified (shouldn't that be always in this way?) automatically....

So what's the difference anyway? Why need to report separately? Who goes this report to?

And moreover, why is there even a report_tasks_immediately option for this anyway, this should be done always and immediately by default (aka hardcoded), right?

Thanks guys.....

My problem is that in this case it isn't completing all the work units.

My machine was shut off for several days. As a result in Cosmology (long work units all about the same length) ordered by deadline I have 7 work units, then a several day gap, then more work units. It appears that the early wus will not finish by deadline.

At this point, I have Boinc running 4 high priority wus from Cosmology, but these are NOT 4 units from the early group. BOINC has run and completed units from the late group and even downloaded additional units. But seemingly will not run any of the early units.

I've finally shut off downloading, more units have finished, but not from the early group.

That would be weird indeed. Please let it run and complete and tell us how it finished. I would be really interested, maybe it offers some insight into the schedulers' work.

But with 13 tasks from 1 project started and the scheduler then gives the CPU to a task that hasn't been started then it's clear the scheduler is not following the FIFO rule. If 13 tasks are already started then, according to John, they must have started because they were in first. If they were in first then why doesn't the scheduler give the CPU back to one of them? Instead it starts a task that hasn't started because, according to John, it came in later.

I am not deep into this issue but have recognized some seemingly weird behavior of the scheduler myself. As far as I have come it is not just the FIFO rule, but instead the scheduler takes the (estimated) time needed to complete a task and compares it to other tasks (of the same projekt of course). Therefore if a partially completed task does only need "little" time to complete and a new task would get close to its deadline or even over it the new task gets CPU time so all tasks can complete within their deadlines.

Well, that is my theory, at last..... but I think it is reasonable and would be practicable, too.

And anyway, it seems to work so far.

The XML code used with BOINC is developed specifically for BOINC. It cannot at this time be compared to real XML, perhaps in the future.

You should make that clear in the Boinc Wiki, too. Guess most plp think this is normal XML, though.

Thank you for sympathy. I didn't mean to whimper. I'm just a little saddened, that the original idea of spare time crunching was effectively put away.

You are welcome. And I didn't take it as whimpering - in fact I think it is a point well worth debating over. And moreover, I totally agree that restrictive deadlines are against the original idea.

@ Ageless: Interesting - both your systems and the info about CPDN and Astropulse. I know that a few other projects don't adhere strictly to their deadlines too, so even if you get over it they will accept the results. But nevertheless, deadlines have of course their eligibility.

Have a nice Sunday, both of you :)
40) Message boards : GPUs : GPU activate/deactivate in BOINC's options (Message 40180)

Post:
I was wondering why it is still not possible to activate or deactivate the GPU use from within BOINC's options. I mean globally - use it or leave it. Or even better, to select it for every single project.

Instead you have to edit the cc_config.xml file (which is quite easy to do for a pro like me, but not everyone is a pro), but I think if you choose to offer that possiibility with BOINC you should put the on/off button inside the options.

And yes, I know it is possible to select that on each project's webpage, but why not include it into BOINC directly? And make it more obviously and easily?
