Use of BOINC and WSL: some confusion
(Message 104113)
Posted 25 Apr 2021 by boboviz Post: I am wondering how I might check, if WSL version 2 is running? Where and with which command, it might get the version of WSL? The command is wsl -l -v I'll add this command to the next version of guide Under Titel: BOINC Client installation in WSL and link to a project, there is a Note: “WSL, by default uses all available cores and memory of you PC”and a commandnotepad "$ env: USERPROFILE / .wslconfig"When I execute this command, I get the following error (Spanish): “Bloc de Notas, El nombre de archive, el nombre de directorio o la sintaxis de la etiqueta del volume no son correctos.” Seems a problem of your Windows...If you search for your error you will find a lot of articles. I would like to ask: where, with which name and with which extension the file shall be saved? This is an old guide for wsl.conf file, but maybe useful |

Use of BOINC and WSL: some confusion
(Message 104112)
Posted 25 Apr 2021 by boboviz Post: That will be revised shortly, and should have said I'm the writer of this guide. And, in the latest version i've added this line: "For the most recent version of Boinc, the command is: boinc.exe -daemon -gui_rpc_port 2536" Maybe this part is not translated in the english version of the guide.... |

Posted 3 Feb 2021 by boboviz Post: I was just wondering if the BOINC add-on webpage was going to be updated This is not the only page to update/change (or remove, if is not longer supported). My message about very old pages is still without answer... |

News on Project Outages

Posted 25 Jan 2021 by boboviz Post: Projects which have closed down usually - eventually - make that visible publicly. Either they post a polite notice of thanks on their website, or their domain registration lapses and gets taken over by a spammer. A lot of times, admins of closed project forget to make that visible and server remain on-line.....for nothing!! For example, the last message from Citizen Science Grid admin is March 2019 and the last wus are 3 years ago. And the project is still in the list. If you come across one of those, it's worth posting the information to the mailing list Jord mentioned. But a message board thread is an inefficient tool in those circumstances - the people you most want to be aware of and act on the information, are the least likely to read it here. Mailing list? Where?? If the message board is inefficient, i think also mailing list is not so good. |

News on Project Outages
(Message 102693)
Posted 25 Jan 2021 by boboviz Post: I'm not sure when the projects list is updated, but its accuracy depends on input from the science projects. BOINC itself has no control over them rather providing an advertising hoarding for projects that are using the BOINC environment. I know that Boinc's admins has no control over the projects. But, if i'm a "fresh" volunteer (without any experience) and i see the list of projects and connect to one, i'm happy if this project is not closed... Otherwise i connect to Science United. |

Posted 25 Jan 2021 by boboviz Post: If the closed projects don't tell that they have closed (there is a projects email list they can email that to), nor the new projects say that they are new and in production, it's no wonder the developers don't know about these things. New projects that are still in alpha/beta stage will generally not be added to the projects list. So, create a thread in which volunteers (that are more "ready" to projects than developers) can report the closed projects is a bad idea? |

Posted 25 Jan 2021 by boboviz Post: That notwithstanding, the following projects listed in the BOINC projects-listing are essentially defunct: It's an old problem. Closed projects remain for years in the list, new projects take a lot of time to enter in the list... If i'm not wrong it's an xml file that is released with every new version of client. But, sometimes, between new version there are months. Is it possible to update only this xml file?? |

But the point is: "follow the money" and money is for SU and not for Boinc. But please, reintroduce the button for download boinc client. |

Posted 10 Oct 2020 by boboviz Post: I would expect to find a big download BOINC button on the BOINC front page, just as it used to be. Go to any other website which is for its own (named, brand) product, will you find when you get there that it advertises a completely different thing with a small link to the actual product? No. So why that need here? I agree. The link to boinc client is too small. But, if i'm not wrong, i remember that SU receives funds from NSA.... |
