1) Message boards : GPUs : GPU BOINC Bang for my Buck (Message 37286)

Ran some GPU Grid and Seti with my cuda. Slightly more points. ATI is definitely more bang for your buck, but of course ATI only runs three projects. This cuda I have is a fermi but I think I'll have to look at an even higher end one for the next purchase. Thanks.

I have a couple ati's running. 320 stream processors. Just bought a cuda, 192 cuda cores, and it's running less points than the ati's, which were half the cost. I'm running collatz and milkyway, which I just read don't work well with cuda. How accurate is that statement, that they don't work well with these two projects?

Thanks. This is the best card I could find that did not need external power, as I cannot upgrade the power supplies in these small form factors (not enough room). 400 gflops single precision, 104 double precision. 400 stream processors. 350 watt psu (my dell 305 watt psu's are running 350 watt cards now with no problem). Probably run about 40,000 boinc points a day.
thanks again.

I didn't pose my question clearly.
The ATI 100-505607 FirePro V3800 Workstation Video Card - 512MB DDR3
is a card I am considering purchasing. This card was released in 2010, it is cal capable, and also double precision capable. I just would like to know it will run boinc before I purchase it, as I will be purchasing three of them.
thanks again

I have three computers that need low profile cards without external power sources, because I cannot upgrade the power supplies in these, as they are small form factors. I have not ordered these cards yet. Which is why I am asking.
Thanks again.

Sorry to bother you again. I have two cards running now, but I am having difficulty upgrading my psu on my sff computers.
This card is cal capable, so will it work for boinc?

I have eight computers I intend to build to run boinc and the HD 4650 is good, inexpensive, easy to install card (have one running already). Just wanted to check this 'Double Precision' thing before I buy more.
Thanks.

I installed the drivers from amd and now it's working. I had installed the drivers previously with the disk that came with it but apparently that was wrong. Anyway,it is downloading both gpu and cpu work, presumably because now it can do both. I assume it will download more gpu work when the project it is running finishes.
In any case, thank you very much.

Installed boinc for ati radeon. 6.10.17
Card is showing in device manager as functioning.
When I attached to collatz and dnetc neither say gpu. Dnetc actually says cpu normal.
Not sure of my next step. It's supposed to automatically recognize it.

Yes I saw the thing about their finances.
I guess you mean that 'wrapper' means dnetc (dnetz) points do get credited in boinc?

Ok thank you.
Are there any boinc projects in which I could use these cards (I got them free and that is why I did not get better ones-I will be getting better ones now that I know)? In fact, I have been trying to determine why some computers are able to do so many more computations than others and now know that this is one of the largest factors.
Are there any other major factors of which I should be aware?
thanks again

It's windows 7 and windows xp pro (one card each in two separate computers). ATI radeon 1500's. Supposed to be supported. I updated all drivers and checked to be sure I was running newest boinc version. I believe they are functioning, because the first Milkyway project to download after installation was a 23 hour project and the xp computer did it in 3 hours flat, but I cannot find anywhere where it 'says' that these are gpu tasks.

I installed ati radeon graphics cards and installed all the drivers but I cannot tell if milkyway is using the gpu or not and cannot find a discussion of that topic anywhere.
I do not see anything anywhere that says gpu tasks are being processed.
