1) Message boards : GPUs : no usable GPUs?
Message 38183 Posted 5 Jun 2011 by Helmholdt |
Added boinc user to video group. Still no usable GPUs message. Tried to create symbolic link to modules directory in /var/lib/boinc directory to give boinc access to modules. Still no usable GPUs message. After several other attempts, I gave up and used yum remove boinc-client boinc-manager. Then I downloaded boinc from boinc.berkeley.edu download page and installed from Downloads directory as non-root user. It now finds my GPU and connects to GPUGrid. However, I do not like where the program is located within /home/{username}/Downloads/BOINC. Seems strange to me, but it works now. Strange it will not work the other way. |

Interesting... I actually installed Boinc with "yum install boinc-client boinc-manager" per Boinc website (as user root) since I was working in command line mode to install NVidia driver. I had to change boot mode to command line since NVidia driver install did not like the Xserver running. I did this by using "ln -s /lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target" [analogous to runlevel 3]. I already had included both the "rdblacklist=nouveau noveau.modeset=0" in the kernel boot line of grub.conf pursuant to other comments I found about loading NVida drivers for Fedora 14. I even added lines to xorg.conf file as suggested: " Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/user/lib64/xorg/modules" EndSection " The modules and extensions are all owned by root. I did use "/sbin/chkconfig boinc-client on" to have boinc auto-start as daemon at boot time. Using "/usr/sbin/usermod -G boinc -a {username}", I added my user account (not root) into the boinc group. I changed "remote_hosts.cfg" and "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" files for use with BoincTasks in my network. Using "lspci | grep VGA" in terminal in Gnome results in message "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF100 [GeForce GTX 480] (rev a3)" Now I am thinking that I may need to give user boinc (or group boinc) persmission to access the modules directory. I will check that out before using yum to remove boinc and reinstalling the Boinc program from within Gnome. I will let you know the status later. How did you finally control fan speed in Fedora? I used TThrottle in Windows to control temperature, but I don't think it has a linux version (I need to check on that). Thank you again for the help. Tom |

System includes NVIDIA GTX480 graphics card which works in Windows Vista 32 bit configuration with Boinc 6.10.60, Now setting up to run Fedora 15 (to test if processing performance is better for GPUGRID) where Xserver recognizes and is using GTX480 graphics card with driver version 270.41.19 installed from NVIDIA website, but Boinc indicates it is not present. Any ideas why Boinc can not find my GPU in this configuration? Thank you in advance. |
4) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinc "retrieving system state" error - program start failure
Message 35945 Posted 2 Dec 2010 by Helmholdt |
On Boinc startup, message indicates "Retreiving system state" and then does not load. Program manager and tray program appear to be running in Task Manager. Boinc Screen Saver reports error. Attempted to remove program and reload. Worked temporarily and then same problem arose.
