I wonder if projects should be retired automatically after a given period of inactivity (six months perhaps?) unless the project manager or the server itself sends some sort of keep-alive message.

Volunteers shouldn't need to hound projects asking when new work is coming or if indeed a project is still alive at all... I wish there was better communication in this regard.

If you have no time to talk to us than you do not deserve our support.

I agree with this completely. Volunteers are spending significant amounts of money on electricity and hardware, as well as their time configuring projects and making sure their crunching farms are operating smoothly. I've always found it disrespectful that many project managers can't seem to be bothered to take even a few minutes here and there to keep their volunteers posted.

I don't have a huge crunching farm like you do, Cruncher Pete, and my total output is a drop in the bucket in comparison, so my voice might not count for much in this regard, but I'm hoping they'll listen to you given how much work you're doing...

Orbit@Home Revival Imminent?

If by "imminent" you mean the opposite of imminent, then yes...

Any bets that the website text will change to "late 2014" rather than the project actual resuming?

The ETA has changed from "October/November 2013" to "early 2014"...

*twiddles thumbs*

If you check the project's website you will often see that it is hosted on a university domain and is run by a professor or other university staff member or graduate student. I think that's a decent (perhaps not perfect) assurance that the project is not malware.

If you are concerned about BOINC (or any other software, really) looking through your files and sending data to someone without your knowledge or permission, you might consider using an encryption scheme of some sort. You could use TrueCrypt or AxCrypt or similar to keep your personal documents private.

As mentioned, BOINC is open source, and so are some of the project applications, so you could limit yourself to running only the open source apps that you or someone you trust have examined.

Running BOINC in a virtual machine sandbox is also a good idea. Your processors and RAM will take a small performance hit, but it will give you peace of mind.

This project has no Linux or Mac applications yet, but it's working fine on my Windows machine. Things seem to be running smoothly so far, and I'm getting continuous work. :)

(I'm eagerly awaiting the Parallella to see if its able to be used as a crunching device, but in the meantime I'd kind of like to try something else.)

Count on some sort of Crunching being available, a number of the Devs, Mods and Alpha Testers (myself included) have ordered Parallellas

Excellent news, Claggy. I'm really glad to hear this.

Note that the forum is now up and running at http://forums.parallella.org and I've requested they add a Projects > BOINC subforum.

NativeBOINC looks great! The new ODROID-U2 has caught my eye, and I may give this a try. (I'm eagerly awaiting the Parallella to see if its able to be used as a crunching device, but in the meantime I'd kind of like to try something else.)

I think crunching on ARM devices will be ubiquitous before too long. Thanks for keeping us posted.

[Edit] Oh, I just noticed that Enigma@Home has an app for Raspbian.

I don't want to give up on Rioja Science just yet, but I would definitely agree that FightMalaria@Home has responsive administrators who care about the crunchers. It's one of my favorite projects. :)

Ray_GTI-R, I saw your post at the SubsetSum forum. Were you able to get that application running on your ODROID-X? That is sure a powerful little board, and seemingly much better suited to crunching than the weaker Raspberry Pi is.

I would consider buying the ODROID-X if crunching on it wasn't too much of a pain...

I believe that article is showing an expected lifespan of eight point two years, not eight thousand two hundred years, etc. If these drives were designed to last several thousand years, we wouldn't ever be having a discussion about their appropriateness as a data drive. ;)

I don't know if the Raspberry Pi will be popular enough to justify it, but I sure would like to see BOINC apps developed for it. The recent WIRED article about the LEGO-and-Pi "toy supercomputer" has sparked some interest.

Just as a FYI, QCN and Radioactive@home require additional gadgets besides a crunching rig.

[Edit] Subset Sum's application code is available on GitHub https://github.com/travisdesell/Subset-Sum/ for those who know how to compile their own apps. Work units for this project don't require much RAM, so it might be a good fit for the Pi.

Hopefully there isn't any overlap in work with this project and WCG's Go Fight Against Malaria.
