Posted 15 May 2020 by Jim1348 Post: Rosetta Covid 700 Mb The Rosetta work units can take a lot more when they are under development; up to around 3 GB. I currently have one running under Win7 64-bit at 2.5 GB. And about half of the ones running on my Ubuntu machines (around 70 cores) are between 1 and 2 GB. In a few days, they will settle down to less than 500 MB. But memory problems tend to surprise new users (and even some old ones) on Rosetta. |

Posted 15 May 2020 by Jim1348 Post: Folding@Home Covid - maybe someone else can advise Running the Folding CPU client on my Ryzen 3950X (all 32 cores, Ubuntu 18.04.4), the FahCore_a7 is using 1.6% of 16 GB memory, or 256 MB. Running the GPU client on an RTX 2060 (Ubuntu 18.04.4), the FahCore_22 is using 1.1% of 32 GB memory, or 352 MB. In all my years on Folding, no one has ever complained about high memory usage. |

If you remember, the HCC (Help Conquer Cancer) project, a predecessor to MCM, had a GPU app. https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=210&post=-21035002_210&language=en_US |

Folding@Home on BOINC
(Message 96966)
Posted 21 Mar 2020 by Jim1348 Post: Another advantage is that it would earn BOINC credits. I never look at credits myself (more or less), but it seems to be a drawback for some people who would otherwise migrate a GPU over to Folding. And I am sure Jacob Klein would be delighted to help (he did Zero Resource Share anyway). http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=5078&nowrap=true#53905 |

Folding@Home on BOINC
(Message 96962)
Posted 21 Mar 2020 by Jim1348 Post: Yes. One tweak is that they would need to make the solution specific to Folding, and not the other BOINC projects you are attached to. For example, Zero Resource share might still be used in that case, in which case any other project coming back to life would not affect it. And the "surplus tasks" problem (very annoying) would also not be present. Even "<fetch_minimal_work>0|1</fetch_minimal_work>" would need to be changed, since I think that is for cc_config.xml, and affects all projects. I don't know which of these is most feasible; you are the expert. But my long (for what it is worth) experience with Folding suggests that yes, their servers would need to be changed. They seem to be very particular. But why not? If they are installing a bunch of new servers anyway, why not just do BOINC? And remember, they have a bunch of different locations now. I get a lot of work from Temple University rather than Stanford, which seems to have receded if not disappeared. They could upgrade one at a time I would think. |

Folding@Home on BOINC
(Message 96960)
Posted 21 Mar 2020 by Jim1348 Post: The main problem was always that Folding needed the lowest possible latency. So they developed their own client to allow downloading a new work unit just as the old one was ending (at 99%). However, BOINC more or less has that capability now too, with the addition of "zero resource share". Then, you download a new work unit when you run out of the old ones. With a little tweaking, it should work. And I think BOINC is better developed overall in how it handles server outages, etc., though there is still room for improvement. For example, at Rosetta at the moment stalled downloads prevent others from downloading too, until the que is cleared and all the old work finishes. |

Posted 14 Mar 2020 by Jim1348 Post: They are notoriously tight-lipped. That is probably because they really don't know what is going on with the crunchers. I expect that they just throw the stuff out, and if enough of it gets returned, they think they are OK. I think they need to be a little more pro-active, or they could come up short someday. |

Stalled downloads
(Message 96242)
Posted 1 Mar 2020 by Jim1348 Post: 1) if you see it happening, set <http_debug> in Event Log options, and retry the transfer - find out what's happening behind that 'transient HTTP error'. Well I tried it too without much success. Here is the BOINC log when it is stalled: 189 Rosetta@home 3/1/2020 12:03:45 PM Started download of PKY1232uM_9mer_gly_0918_1056_0001_5_SSC_matched_9_FD_C_GP_B_0001_notail.zip I then cancelled the download (in the Transfers tab of BOINCTasks) and rebooted the Ubuntu 18.04.4 machine (BOINC 7.16.3). But the file by that name did not show up in the "client_state.xml". I think we are stuck, so to speak. |
