21) Message boards : Projects : Rosetta@home needs help (Message 107603)

Post:
Does anybody here have contacts to a person at Rosetta who can be asked to take over responsibility?

I have no contacts, and neither does anyone else (though sometimes they try emailing various people there).
However, I do have long years of experience. Things changed drastically last year, due to the advent of the AI/machine learning techniques.
They do most of their stuff in-house, and send only the 4.20 Rosettas that they receive from outside sources (Robetta I think) out to the crunchers.

The other work is the Pythons, which are from a single researcher. They are the ones that really need the support, and aren't getting it.
I think we can assume that it is not a widely-supported project within Rosetta now, and probably won't be.

You have made the best suggestions, if they will listen. But I don't think they have their skilled programmers on it anymore. They have other things to do no doubt.

Thanks. It always looked like a worthwhile project in an important area.

MilkyWay is having problems again. I can't get to the website.
I can get CPU work (N-Body), but the GPU work (Separations) is very limited; a few come in, but not enough.

It seems that MilkyWay has been down for about an hour. I can't contact the website, or get new work.

TN-Grid is down.

It is getting hard to keep computers busy.
But I do a lot of Folding too, both CPU and GPU, which can usually be counted on.

SiDock is gone again. But I was able to upload my last set of work units.
Now I am zero-zero.

MilkyWay works well on Windows, both CPU and GPU (with the right card, usually AMD).

If anyone is still looking for a new project, Gaia@home looks interesting. It is an astrophysics project using very precise data from the Gaia spacecraft.
https://sci.esa.int/web/gaia

It is not listed on the BOINC projects list, so you have to join from their website.
http://150.254.66.104/gaiaathome/

There is not much info on what they actually send you, but maybe someone with a knowledge of the subject can jog them.
I just attached an Ubuntu 20.04.3 machine and downloaded a bunch of work units, but they have not started yet.

QuChemPedIA server are migrating to new data center and will receive some required updates. Benoit is expecting return to production sometimes next week. Fingers crossed all goes well.
Thanks. That is useful. Their communications with their users is not the best.

34) Message boards : Questions and problems : Can not get Rosetta Python (Vbox) tasks (Message 106033)
Posted 8 Nov 2021 by Jim1348
Post:
When Python first came out, I got about 10 tasks.
Then all of sudden they no longer came to my system,
Nothing has changed in the setup. I have current Vbox since I run LHC ATLAS and never had any problems with Vbox in the past.

Re-posting the same issue on every forum you can find probably won't fix it.
More likely, freeing up memory and trying the other suggestions will. The BOINC scheduler is also rather particular, and won't download some work if you tie it up on other projects.
I would think you should have found that out already though.

You have too many machines. I have two Ryzen 3600's on WCG, one on MCM and the other on ARP. They never have that problem.

I am beginning to wonder though if it is like GPUGrid. They always have an unofficial block on too many connections at once. No one knows what it is, but it is speculated that it is a DDoS protection measure, probably instituted at the university network level that the project can't do anything about. I am not sure what the equivalent is here. But you are overloading something.

I go back and forth on this one. I had it set to 256 and just changed it to 16. Is there a safe 'n sane setting???
<max_file_xfers>16</max_file_xfers>
<max_file_xfers_per_project>16</max_file_xfers_per_project>

I use this:
<max_file_xfers>8</max_file_xfers>
<max_file_xfers_per_project>4</max_file_xfers_per_project>

The problem with setting it too large is that they seem to interfere with each other. Also, when first attaching, I want at least one work unit to start up early. If you set the transfers too large, you have to wait longer for the first one to finish downloading. But my maximum machine has 32 virtual cores. I don't know about more than that.

Yes, I misstated that. Aurum said that he wanted the other CPU projects, so he would have to set CPU to "yes".
But then he would get the CPU version of OPN also.

If you don't want any CPU projects, then you don't have to set CPU to yes.

One one of my NVidia systems, I set the venue "no cpu" and "allow nvidia" but have not received any tasks from WCG.
On a linux ATI system that is open for CPU and GPU I get a boatload of CPU tasks and a dinghy load of GPU.

I was guessing there are no NVIdia tasks available but a few ATI. Maybe the problem is linux ATI but no windows NVidia ???

Or is the problem getting the NVidia because I specified no CPU?

I poked around WCG but cannot find a list of applications. Their site is so different from other projects it is difficult to even find my own account. Is there a list of apps or even a server status page?

(1) You need to specify CPU in order to get GPU. And they have the same pile of GPU work that they send either to Nvidia or ATI (they are both OpenCl), so when they have work for one, they have work for the other. And when they are out (more likely), they are out for both.

(2) I am sure that they don't have a server status page; that is a known shortcoming, and I have never seen an app page either. I believe they were doing their own thing before BOINC, and never entirely adapted.

We had a long discussion on that right at the beginning of OPNG. You can't separate the CPU and GPU work units, so if you want 50, you will get 50.
I think that is total, though they probably won't send you enough GPU work anyway, so you will end up doing the CPU stuff.

It is a waste of everyone's time and resources, but that is the way they do it.
(I do Folding.)

I have been caught twice now, once with a stuck download that I ended up aborting.
And now I have two N144 running, but they will complete tomorrow with no immediate prospects of upload.

But not all is lost. The ARP machine is running fine.
