Website still down. Apart from fixing their inability to tame the IBM WCG system, they really need to work
on their communication skills. Not a peep from them on their social media sites, regarding this latest kaboom.

No one in a large organization communicates bad results, only good ones.

I got suckered into trying ARP again 12 hours ago, and am still trying to complete the downloads.
It will be a more efficient use of my time to let them fix it, and then check again next year.

Well, regarding the situation at the moment of WCG at Krembil/Jurisica Lab, all I have to say is: "Luke 23:34" :-)

I thought maybe you were going to say "Physician, heal thyself".

Oh, for everyone except the one who sent the email encouraging everyone to start demanding tasks again.

They were afraid that they would lose crunchers if they didn't give us a pep talk.
It should have adhered more closely to the facts on the ground.

Error 500: javax.servlet.ServletException: net.myvietnam.mvncore.exception.DatabaseException: Error executing SQL in MVNForumPermissionWebHelper.getPermissionsForGroupGuest.
Edit - still can't get in, but they're still creating and issuing new work far faster than their download servers can handle it.

Oh, and I got a copy of that email too. Are we all going to get one?

I got it, and thought it was very nice. But then I tried to set up a profile for ARP, and got the error message.
It is sort of like annexing a region and then having to withdraw from it.

That is too much of an insider history; accurate no doubt, but not the main issue.

The two real problems are:

(1) BOINC is too complicated to use (for the developers mainly, not the users). That is mainly because of the scheduler, which tries to be all things to all people.
Just do what the Folding@home client does, and download a new work unit as the last one is finishing. You only need to add the ability to choose multiple projects, not just one.

(2) The other problem is that as the cost of computing has fallen, more research labs can do it in-house. That is especially true with the advent of AI. That is of course outside of the control of BOINC, except that BOINC could explore its use as a training resource for the in-house computing.

I agree that Dave is being too hard on himself. He has done an incredible job.

World Community Grid

We were unable to bring our production environment to the same state as the QA environment this week. As we also have yet to resolve an issue that prevents BOINC clients from downloading workunits, the effort to bring the Grid back online has stretched into next week. We will provide a further update on Monday, May 30th.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Thank you

I wonder if some of the sub-projects could be taken up by others in similar fields?

Yes, in particular I would think that Scripps could run OPN by themselves if they want to.
They have funding from several sources, and are probably a lot bigger than Krembil.

Would be devastating to lose one of the largest projects from ineptitude!

That is more of a cheap shot than an analysis. What is surprising is that IBM was willing to undertake such a large and complicated project for many years.
They devoted a lot of resources and good people to it. Try to find another as good anywhere.

I had four machines on Rosetta doing mainly Pythons, which not everyone is set up to do. They have been working for months.
A few days ago I stopped getting work on the Windows machine, and then the Linux machines.

So I bailed out. There is no one there to answer questions, or even have any idea of what is going on.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. They added security measures to 7.18.1 that break some applications.
We have been discussing it on QuChemPedIA.

But I am not the Linux expert, so I don't try to fix it. Only the projects can it seems.

I don't see a problem with that. I knew that with a complicated system that was fine-tuned by IBM over the years, it would not be a simple matter of copying files as some people thought.
Keep at it.

They originally said toward the latter part of April, but I don't remember the date. It could change in any case.

He isn't presenting that. That blog is just commenting on the inspiration anyway.
I don't see any comments by him, or any of the Rosetta staff on the present status, let alone future direction, of Rosetta@Home.

Not that the project is distinct from the software they are using in-house.

It is always useful if the moderators are fairly active on an active forum.
It keeps the comments relevant too. They now wander all over the place on Rosetta.
New users keeps asking the same questions, probably because they can't find the answers that are already there.

There should be stickys too for the most often asked questions. The forum is a wasteland now.
