The SHARCNET website clearly states (look under Support) that they are a 0900 to 1700 EST (Canada) 5 day a week operation. No support on weekends,. Subtract out lunch breaks, staff meetings, etc. maybe there is an average of 6 hours of support per day.

With this work schedule, it is no surprise it took forever to get WCG up and running. And no surprise it takes forever to get anything fixed.

SHARCNET has other users, We (WCG users) have no idea where WCG lies on the priority list of having issues resolved. Maybe WCG is at the bottom of the list.

All of this had to be known to Krembil from day 1.

So, it is what it is. Just find other projects to use your computer time. No use complaining. Nothing is going to change.

I understand your thought process but I don't think your idea is valid.

I participate in several projects and one, "Milkyway", only generates enough work units to make sure the "ready to send queue" queue does not go empty. So, with your idea, this project would always be near the bottom of your priority list, when in fact there may be lots and lots of work units that COULD be created.

For starters, go to the BOINC Manager, Options -> Computing Preferences

Under the Computing tab -

Set both usage limits to 100%

UNCHECK all the "When to suspend" boxes

Under the Disk and Memory tab -

Disk - UNCHECK everything

Memory - Make sure everything is 100% and Leave nonGPU in memory is CHECKED.

Then let us know how things are working

Hopefully this helps. I sort have this issue sometimes.

Here is what I do -

First see what is running. I use System Monitor to see if the processes "boinc" and/or "boincmgr" are running. For simplicity, "end task" for whatever is running.

"boinc" must be running before "boincmgr" is started.

Second, start "boinc". Go to Terminal and enter /etc/init.d/boinc-client start

Third, start boincmgr. There are several ways to do that.

If "boinc" is running, and boincmgr" shows disconnected in the bottom panel, stop "boincmgr", and restart it.

I think there is a "timing problem" between "boinc" and "boincmgr"when booting the computer sometimes.

You could monitor your temperatures to make sure your system is "overloaded".

SpeedFan is good for the CPU and other system components. GPU-Z is good for the GPU.

Both programs can create a log file,

If my computer is turned on, I am always logged-in so that was never an issue for me.

I have the run_manager in my UBUNTU Startup Application list. The BOINC Manager starts when I turn on my computer and automatically login.

The boinc-client-nvidia-cuda that I never used is probably why I have that step about the missing libraries. That would make the installation process easier than trying to figure out what packages are missing. I will try that next time.

I should have written "nvidia-361 or whatever driver version you want to use".

Thanks for the comments.

I am running BOINC 7.2.42 using UBUNTU 16.04 with a NVIDIA card.

Here is what I do starting with a "clean" UBUNTU installation.

1) G0 to the BOINC website and download the BOINC software (boinc_7.2.42_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh)
2) Copy or move it to your home directory
3) Mark it for execution (Permissions)
4) Install BOINC (run the .sh file)
5) Copy run_manager to your Desktop (for convenience)
6) Open the Terminal, navigate to the Desktop, and run (start) BOINC (run_manager)
7) Check for errors (missing libraries) and correct any missing
8) Using apt-get or Synaptic install nvidia-361
9) When you start BOINC, check the Event Log to make sure there are two lines that indicate CUDA and Opencl were recognized.

You should be good to go.

Maybe this is the answer to a different question than is being addressed in this thread.

In the latest release (7.4.27) what happened to the contrasting colors on the Statistics tab? Now the are all "washed out". It looks like the color level was reduced. For example, instead of "red" being 255,0,0 RGB, now it is 50,0,0.

I have been installing the latest updates all along, so it is not like this is new to me.

I am trying to download 7.2.33 for LINUX 32 bit but all I keep getting is 7.2.28.

It seems like the web pages haven't been updated to "point to" the latest version.

The 64 bit LINUX version is OK.

Am I missing something?

Try going to Terminal, then the BOINC folder, then enter ./run_manager and see if you are missing anything (error messages).

Thanks. I figured it was right under my nose. That fixed my Windows computer.

Do you know if under Ubuntu I can stop the workunits when closing the manager? That option isn't there like it is on my Windows computer. The workunits keep running.

Sorry if this been asked before but I couldn't find it on the message boards.

How do I get my Manager Exit Confirmation screen back (the one that asks if I want the workunits to keep running when I close the manager)? I must have checked something, somewhere, to not show it.
