Problem solved! This error is caused by an incomplete removal of the previous software. The solution was to re-download the old version. Reinstall it and then use the old program to uninstall. After restarting the computer, the installation of the new software goes without incident. Previous preferences and stored data are maintained and all is well with the world. It is strange the a complete inspection of the registry and HD did not locate the BOINC related entries that were causing the problem, if that was indeed the cause. In any event, this procedure works. I hope that this helps others with the same installation problem.

Thanks for the response. I tried the steps listed in the mskb, (Performed method 1 2 4 8 11 and 12) Did a fresh search of the registry and removed everything boinc. Also ran a couple of registry cleaners. Used windows installer cleanup (boinc is not listed)Also checked for pending installs in the registry.I am at the end of my knowledge!Amy other things to try? I think I may just use my system backup image and reimage my HD with the version prior to the attempted upgrade and forget trying to upgrade.

I'm having trouble installing this update. I'm using windows 7 on a 64 bit HP desktop. I downloaded the 64 bit version. I keep getting "Internal Error 2718 {4d12d895-50b2-4287-b389-ad4d74f85693} I am installing over the previous version of boinc. I have tried removing all boinc references from the registry, all boinc folders form HD. A fresh download, several reboots, a registry cleaner. I wanted to try installing from the command prompt, but I don't know how to do this. Can anyone help? I've used boinc for years had don't want to stop!

Thanks.
