21) Message boards : Questions and problems : client connection lost (Message 53838)

After entering "update" on several completed WU's, the connection with the BOING client was lost. Install/re-install of BOINC has not resolved the problem, except, after the reinstall, of course, the Mgr. shows nothing.

My new system is a DELL notebook, 4cpu's, 64-bit, with Windows 7; the old
system was a Sony VAIO, 32-bit, w/Windows Vista.

Any ideas?

Since BOINC ver. 7.0.64 (x86), there has been a new "don't need" response
from the scheduler. I've managed to "suspend" at least one of the
other WU's (both CPDN), to force a download of a desired WU from another project. CPDN should not be adversely affected.

However, am not completely sure what situation the "don't need" response is supposed to address. I prefer to take a more hands-on approach, and allocate
different projects' priorities.

Is BOINC taking a more active mode in allocating different projects?

Thanks, Mark. It's sad. orbit@home is, certainly, needed; we all know
of the two "head's-up" events, recently.

Is orbit@home still viable? It appears to have ceased updating
the "statistics" section of the BOINC Manager, and its web site
is currently unavailable.

My Sony VAIO cpu/gpu temps started rising, over the last few months. Not determining a hardware cause (computer fan running ok, two ext. fans, also ok), and after blowing out the dust, I decided to download TThrottle, rev. 5.10.

Voila' An approx. 20deg. C drop in recorded cpu junction temps. Have not dug into the history of TThrottle pblms. (my rev. was one of the original ones, until upgrade), and so don't know what went wrong with the temp. recordings, during the intervening years.

Good luck, anyway; especially, with any new download of TThrottle.

Just a quick comment, on BOINC recruitment:

Enlisting newcomers to BOINC, for me, has been a slow, but sure process. Most (approx. three, in the last year) have been made in the local restaurant and coffee-house (I am retired.). The reasons for volunteering BOINC info. have been varied, but most have been receptive. They all, without exception, have been new acquaintances, which would be expected.

The trick, for me (and, possibly, for some others), has been to bring up
the subject only when I think there has been a definite need to be met, on the
part of the other person.

Although this approach isn't very aggressive, I hope it's addition can
be taken as a word of encouragement to the overall effort, with its variety
of approaches.

I shall continue to gently beat the bushes, on behalf of BOINC!

Hi. Problem solved, with successful installation of rev. 6.10.58

A little info., on developments, after last mess., from you.

Firstly, thanks, for your suggestions, during this trouble-shooting
exercise. Everything on my system seemed to check out, okay (Windows
Installer, msi.dll, paths, etc.).

Secondly, I tried, for the first time, to install a much older BOINC rev.
6.10.18, which was successful. Feeling a log-jam might have been broken,
I followed up with a fresh down-load/install, of 6.10.58, which was, also,
successful.

Lastly, although I'm still not sure what the cause of all this really was,
nor what actually caused the success, with 6.10.18 (unless, it was inherent
w/that rev.), I'll just pass on one (of many actions I took, via Microsoft
Support, etc.): In the registry, I checked the ImagePath of the MSIServer.
The Value Data was: %systemroot%\system3\msiexec /V. I changed it, per
their suggesion, to C:WINDOWS\system32\msiexec /V.

A reboot after performing some other necessary ops.) resulted in the same
inablity to install BOINC. However, a (security pgrm) finger-entry op.
had become inoperative. I went back into the registry, and changed it back
to its original Value Data. A reboot yield the same failures, w/both pgrms.

Finally, the install op. with 6.10.18 was done. A reboot resulted in not only
the BOINC rev's successful op., but, more importantly, the Finger-op. was, also,
restored. I don't begin to know the various ways the installers affect each
other, and this was in the "go figure" category. Am glad all is well, once,
again.

And, again, thanks, for the help, and for sharing with me a walk down debug lane.

Rec'd FAQ from Jordan, and followed-through, by deleting internet temp. files,
etc. New download of 6.10.58 resulted in a Windows Installer window being
outputted to screen, w/mess: The Windows Installer Service could not be
accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.
etc.

I downloaded/attempted to install another Windows Installer 4.5. even though
there is one in my system. Error mess. resulted: Setup Error: Not enough
storage is available to process this command.

Any other ideas?

Post:
Hi. Will do. What I've been trying to do, is upgrade from 6.10.36 to 6.10.58.
It has been unsuccessful, thus far. Even previous versions (I have most of them.) don't install. After initiating the installer, it outputs to the main window (lower, right-side), then disappears. The system, then, slows down,
dramatically (Windows VISTA Business, w/SP2, etc., on a Sony Vaio). This occurrs, even after previously deleting the supposedly "corrupted" installers.

Am thinking that no corruption is going on, at all; all previous installs, were
always no-brainers. Either Microsoft has changed software (or, Sony), or some
software engineer, at BOINC, has omitted/added something deleterious.

If worse comes to worse, I shall have to call up previous versions of my Windows
operating system, until I find the last one that allows BOINC installs -- then
nail down the software causing the problem. I'm somewhat surprised that more
people are not experiencing this problem.

Thanks, anyway, for your concern, and FYI.
