Hi.
I have BOINC 7.0.24 running under Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi.
I can't find a project that runs & has tasks i.e., either Projects don't recognise the CPU (that's 99% of Projects) or if they do recognise the CPU they have no tasks.
Help!
Cheers, Ray

Post:
Upgraded to BOINC 7.0.25 on to 2 PCs.
Both PCs graphics cards fail to process where previously they were perfectly happy to crunch prior to the upgrade to BOINC 7.0.25.
Similar error messages ... GPU does not exist blah, blah for every previously-perfectly-OK-GPU-enabled project.
Reverted to 6.12.34.
XP Pro (AGP card, Gallatin) reclaimed all settings ... sublimely.
W7 64-bit (OpenCL card, 2600K) failed miserably and needed much manual intervention just to get back to a clean slate which then required project re-attachment etc etc

Discuss.

FWIW - my advice is to ignore upgrading to 7.0.25 until an adult gets involved.
FWIW2 - I am not subscribed to this thread and I do not read PM's so trolling is a waste of effort.

FINAL UPDATE

See http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h216/Ray_GTI-R/CQ1140/

72C down to 48C on-load (with dust filter! A cheap solution and much success to follow?)

UPDATE

ATI-friendly project / E-450 HD6320 GPU process result:-

Moo! / yes

Ray
More off-topic ...
Ambient 21C
After a couple of hours modding the case without voiding the warranty:-

CPU max 57C (-13c)
GPU max 58C (-12c)

Still pretty hopeless for a net top :-(
FWIW There is a relatively huge amount of space inside this box so thermal cramping is just not an issue. Laptops be aware.
FWIW2 At these temperatures the internal, automatically thermally controlled fan runs at 80% RPMs about 99% of the time.
FWIW3 Filtered air is being fanned in. No exhaust fan (just yet).

OK, found out the hard way ($$$).

The good news is that an E-450 CPU with an HD 6320 integrated GPU will crunch "ATI" GPU projects as follows:-

ATI-friendly project / E-450 HD6320 GPU process result:-

Collatz / yes
Milkyway / no (project requires a Double Precision GPU)
Moo! / unknown just now as no tasks received, but probably OK
PrimeGrid / yes
SETI Enhanced / unknown just now, but probably OK

The bad news - temperatures!

Ray
The rest is off-topic but worth a read?
At an ambient of 21C this box runs at the highest temperatures that I have ever seen on any PC that I have ever owned.

With a GPU task running & 2 CPU tasks running @ 50%.
CPU max 70C.
GPU max 70C.

The box is a Compaq CQ1140UK net top. Smart fan enabled - runs at 100% all the time when any significant load is applied.
No intake nor exhaust fan present. I quickly jury-rigged a small auxiliary external fan to move some air "at", rather than properly through, the rear vent and that dropped things down a lot:-

With a GPU task running & 2 CPU tasks running @ 50%.
CPU max 63C.
GPU max 64C.

A lot more airflow work needed on this box. Goodbye warranty!
PS: this CPU/GPU combo appears in laptops too ... {shudder} ... maybe good if your CH fails this winter? I dread to think what will happen in summer!

I researched the boinctray suggestion - see thread from 2010 ... http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=5464
which ended "I'll pass" and also covered preferences.

In the meantime having had the chance to casually observe this sticky WU behaviour for a while I have concluded that, for my setups at least, it's a per-project thing as follows:- http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=7135&nowrap=true#41706
Advice there, please.
27) Message boards : GPUs : CUDA Work Units do not Suspend when Computer in use (Message 41706)

Post:
I get the same "WU's do not Suspend"-type issue when running e.g., Moo! GPU tasks.

It seems to me projects that update every X minutes/% ofsomethingorother behave quite badly when I need to do other [important-to-me] work Right Now irrespective of settings.

In my case I have to manually intervene ... select & suspend all relevant tasks then restart (logoff is another option as is Shut Down) just to regain control of what my PC is to do next AKA:- KILL!!!

Maybe I've got this wrong - if so advice is welcome.

Meantine:- a polite note to (non-BOINC) project admins:- 60x60/24/7/365(+1/4) is an optional, nice-to-have modus operandi. Casual users who devote time to crunching off-peak do need the above-mentioned "KILL" behaviour.

Has anyone tried an E-450 CPU with an HD 6320 integrated GPU to crunch any of the existing "ATI" GPU projects? (including those requiring double-precision?)

HELP!

I have multiple PC's, multiple ATI GPU's, multiple Windows-only OS's.

The previous same-name- ... minus "revisited" ... BOINC thread ended nowhere (last post dated: 17 Nov 2010:- e.g., "could".)

So - why do BOINC Project ATI GPU tasks continue to run when the user is active despite preferences that are set to suspend / "Use GPU while computer is in use" is unclicked ... then the current GPU task runs until it ends ... upon which sanity is then happily restored?
I'm happy to ignore replies like "switch to XYZ OS / GPU's" TIA.

I vote for restoring GPU use to the user immediately when required for non-BOINC work based on one simple rule :- If I want to use my PC I don't want to be interruped by BOINC.
Period.
If that means work ... ummm do it, pretty please???

Ray
(Apologies if I've got any of this wrong - I just click buttons until something works then when it doesn't ... I ask for help.)

Sorry to hear this. I was just about to experiment with it as a known good multi-threaded BOINC application on various Operating Systems.

:-(

Anyway:- what other CPU multi-thread BOINC applications are there? I have tried to find but there seems to be no categorisation by this criteria?

Thanks, Ray

32) Message boards : BOINC Manager : how to complete more work (Message 39703)
Posted 17 Aug 2011 by Profile Ray_GTI-R
Post:
I'd like a "BOINC Manager" ummm ... Manager. Or extra options?

a) Delay start of BOINC processing by 1/2/etc minutes. Required always. See a1, b1 below.
b) Option to display a countdown to the startup of BOINC manager AND an option to postpone by 1/2/etc minutes
c) Option to use x% of GPU when processing GPU-intensive tasks

Why?
Overall reason:-
For me, BOIC is a non-essential task for startup. It's not a need, it's an option to run after other essential work is finished.

Details ...

a1) because older PC's (single CPU core - multithreaded or not) will start up quicker if BOINC is not trying to start up and/or run tasks at startup AND this lets the PC cooling system "get over" high priority startup CPU tasks that temporarily increase load/temperatures. Also, shocking I know but I switch my PCs off when I'm done throughout the day. Then switch each back on when I want to do something important so startup is frequent.
b1) for flexibility ... e.g., I'm busy doing more important stuff (re-install / re-configure / full virus scan etc)
c1) to reduce power consumption and GPU temperatures to my liking

I know ...
a2) BOINC has a "don't run if CPU usage is y%" option but that does not seem to apply at startup in my experience. Also, where a low, e.g., 10% BOINC CPU preference is specified that process is fighting other more important, sub-y% (total) processes. Example - at startup, an automated backup runs on one PC that uses significantly less than y% but is considerably slowed if BOINC is running because an antivirus process running still under a y% total CPU usage checks every file backed up. Result - high CPU temperatures as each process stresses the CPU (flush cache) in order to complete it's own tiny task that, for crunching at this time is pretty irrelevant given the miniscule work that is actually achieved during startup.
b2) doesn't exist and I need it, please? Snooze is ineffective and unconfigurable.
b3) doesn't exist and I need it, please?

If I have missed any of these (automatic, configurable) options in BOINC manager or in the curent remodel proposal, please feel free to call me the Mr Spoons of 17/8/2011

Using BOINC "Attach to account manager" I ... ummm ... can't.
I believe this is a BOINC/worldcommunitygrid issue that needs a fix.
Cheers, Ray
PS:-
Yes I have previously registered with worldcommunitygrid.
Yes I have tried account manager again.
Yes I have re-checked the user & password..
Yes I have changed my password on worldcommunitygrid and can access my account there.
And yes - I have "tried switching off & switching on" ;-) In fact the same problem occurs on more than one of my PCs (different operating systems)

Hi.
Thanks for that, but ...
It doesn't upgrade/update BOINC 6.10.17 to 6.10.56/58 although all the Install progress details show OK.
When I check I'm still running BOINC 6.10.17
I have also tried uninstalling (Complete Removal) the pre-existing installed BOINC 6.10.17 elements that I can, via Synaptics Package Manager, then re-installing via the link ... still showing BOINC 6.10.17 AND I lost my curent work progress.
I think I'll simply stick with 6.10.17 until a BOINC update is pushed through from Ubuntu/whoever.
But thanks, again, for the interest in this thread and understanding that a One-click-fix is what's required.
Cheers, Ray
PS - According to the pre-existing and post-failed-upgrade BOINC metapackage info, the Ubuntu Developers (Maintainer) say via Properties that 6.10.17 is the Latest Available Version .. checked today 24/8/10

Couldn't find a "Start New Thread" link on BOINC so forced to post here (sorry)!

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
BOINC 6.10.17

Problem:-
Unable to upgrade BOINC to 6.10.56 ... I have spent days on this.
Simple, (preferably UK English) step-by-step, noobie, no Linux knowledge (preferably one-click upgrade) help required!

Please, pretty please don't ask me any technical questions nor give any /bish/bash/bonk nor terminal instructions. Please, pretty please don't! I just won't understand, sorry again!

I just want to upgrade BOINC 6.10.17 to BOINC 6.10.56 then get some sleep.
