Posted 11 Mar 2014 by BilBg Post: I've ran Zone Alarm before, I'll reinstall it to see if that can give me some better diagnostics. No need for this. Get this simple program (NetMeter) - it can show graph of in/out traffic of any of your network interfaces: http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item26 (just put NetMeter.exe in empty directory and run it - I use/tested it on Windows 98, XP, Vista, 7) ADSL lines are sensitive to Upload traffic (i.e. minimize Upload traffic to get good Download speed) More simple/small tools you may like: TCPView http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx CurrPorts http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html |

Feature Request: Show errors/invalids in BOINC Manager icon/Projects tab
(Message 51553)
Posted 26 Nov 2013 by BilBg Post: (there may be already ticket for this but I didn't see it) Most 'casual' users of BOINC don't ever look in Event Log or on the web sites of attached Projects to check if they (users) generate errors/invalids. They think if BOINC do 'something' and don't crash/hang that all is OK Proposal: - change BOINC Manager icon in systray (in a similar way as when computation is paused) when 'Error while computing' and (if possible to get this info in sched_reply_*.xml) also for 'marked as invalid' tasks. (also: in some way hint the user where to look for more info - after he clicks the icon (something like an opt-out popup)) (experienced users may want some way to opt-out of this info) - add in Projects tab columns 'Errors/day' and 'Invalids/day' (or 'Errors last day' and 'Invalids last day') 'Casual' users expect that if 'the program' detect problems it have to show something in front of their eyes. If nothing obvious is shown they don't care. The current philosophy of BOINC is 'make it simple so novice is not distracted' But do we really need participants/computers which only generate errors/invalids and do not do useful work for projects? (often without even realizing they are in fault) |

(Message 47543)
Posted 27 Jan 2013 by BilBg Post: I only log in with remote desktop. Might that have something to do with it? Yes, remote desktop disables the NVIDIA driver and uses its own (and CUDA disappears). Try using other program as TeamViewer or VNC (they do not 'play' with the video driver so CUDA is unaffected) It will be better if you post the first 40-50 lines of BOINC startup messages from Event Log (Advanced menu - Event Log) http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Advanced_view#The_Event_Log_window |

Posted 17 Jan 2013 by BilBg Post: I think when BilBG said "if the clock goes backwards by more than 30 seconds" he meant "if the clock falls behind by more than 30 seconds"? Dunno, I don't want to put words in his mouth :-) I mean e.g.: Set the clock manually 2 minutes in the past (backwards) (e.g. from 11:22:00 to 11:20:00) Now look in BOINC Manager - all the Running tasks will have 'Elapsed' time stall (the same unchanging value will be displayed for 2 minutes) Look in Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer - the apps/tasks will still run Wait 30 seconds - the apps (processes) will exit (disappear from processes) Look again in BOINC Manager - the tasks that actually exited will still display 'Running' Now wait for the 2 minutes to pass At that moment BOINC will restart the apps/tasks Look in messages and stderr.txt - they will say 'no hearthbeat for 30 s' I found and posted this bug ~2007 (on SETI forums) and I think it still exists (not fixed, maybe it's a 'feature' ;) ) (I'm using BOINC 6.10.58, can you confirm this for 6.12.34 and 7.0.28) P.S. @kdsjsdj: Are you Dagorath familiar from other sites?: http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/show_user.php?userid=2247 |

Posted 17 Jan 2013 by BilBg Post: Can you monitor your computer clock? E.g. by some script that logs the current time every 10 s? The problem is that the interval (10 s) have to be measured by something different than the current time. So if you use some tool to pause 10 s - check what happens if you manually adjust computer clock +- by a few minutes (is the pause really 10 s or is it continue immediately if the clock changes) If the computer clock go backwards by more than 30 s apps and BOINC think there is no 'hearthbeat' |

Probably (as I don't run MilkyWay@Home) the link is this: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/prefs.php?subset=project I 'crafted' the link from other projects where I have account: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/prefs.php?subset=project http://orbit.psi.edu/oah/prefs.php?subset=project Note: Unchecking 'Use CPU' will disable the Download of more tasks for CPU from the particular project, the CPU tasks already in the computer will continue to run. |

Posted 11 Jan 2013 by BilBg Post: It's running in the background as I write. I chose Suspend GPU from the Activity menu at 12:57 after the "resuming computation" entry, and nothing appeared in the log. What should be written when I turn off GPU? You have to have Running GPU task (in your case AstroPulse v6 v6.04 (opencl_nvidia_100)) to see any effect from "Suspend GPU from the Activity menu" Do you use any program to monitor GPU load and temperature? (and know that 'something' is using it): http://rh-software.com/ http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ http://www.ozone3d.net/gpu_caps_viewer/ http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php TThrottle (can also control the temperature to avoid overheating): http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/ P.S. You lose big processing time when you "Kill the app/process": http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4499642&offset=0&show_names=0&state=6&appid= Is the computer too unresponsive when AstroPulse runs on your GPU? |

Posted 7 Jan 2013 by BilBg Post: So you're saying users ought to consult the source code if they want up to date documentation? No, I think he is saying that he and others active in editing wiki pages have to dig sometimes in the code to find out the truth about BOINC behavior when the developers didn't say something explicitly. And this takes time. Especially when the code changes significantly. Often some 'new concept' code replaces the old, it takes time someone to figure out what is changed and edit the relevant wiki pages.
