1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Changing CPU usage time every second (via script)? (Message 61115)

I've set the interval of usage changes to 25 seconds and value of usage change to 4 %. This gives me quite stable output to the terminal.

Recent version and changes can be found here:

Interesting point. You say that it's possible that I could hit an on-cycle in every second. If nobody here can give me the answer then I guess this can only be figured out by studying source code or trial and error. I'll take the latter approach.

There's also the question if changing global_prefs_override.xml and running boinccmd --read_global_prefs_override will be fast enough. I'll try 3 seconds first.

Hi, I've written a BASH script to change CPU usage time according to CPU temperature. It can be found here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=9355
This is v0.01 - I could upload v0.1 somewhere if someones interested.

Having set this to update every two minutes this is running since a year now without problems. Sometimes i. e. when I play a flash video or a web site has many scripts temperature and thus fan speed still increases too much. Is it okay to set the update time to 1 second and usage change to 5% or will this f**k up my results?

Big thanks, Claggy, Ageless!

So I don't need to update BOINC but still thanks for the info.

Hi all!

I installed 7.3.7 (recommended) on my phone (Android 4.2.2) but then realized I had to upgrade. I'll let my tasks finish but don't want to download new ones. Unfortunately I can't find the option to request "No new tasks" though I've read it's available. Is it?

If not will updating BOINC (GPlay recommends 7.3.12) reset the tasks and projects? (Probably.)

Best

Thanks Mark, but I already tried that (as mentioned in the linked thread).

Additionally:
// if primary platform is anonymous, ignore alternate platforms. //

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/gitweb/?p=boinc-v2.git;a=blob;f=sched/handle_request.cpp#l1290

My app_info.xml now looks like this:
http://paste.balbinus.org/1062

I also tried the <platform_name> and <platform_name><name> scheme, as well as <alt_platform><name>.
sched_request_boinc.umiacs.umd.edu.xml always has <platform_name>anonymous</platform_name>. But so does SETI and it works.

Serendipitously I found that there's a get_project_config.php for Lattice. In contrast to SETI it only has Linux 32-bit in it. I'll contact the project admin (again).

I thought about setting up my own BOINC server but that's just too much.

I'll simply conclude that it's not my fault but that the project.xml on the project's server is not correct.

How long did you wait? Maybe it was still open in background ...

@foxfire: I recently had problems getting BM to connect because I hadn't checked the permissions on the mount point. /media/datac was 640 ... but it needed 641.

No one?

Alright here's the skinny: I compiled the GARLI app (statically linked) for the Lattice Project. Runtests.sh passed successfully. I copied the app into the project folder and created an app_info.xml there. Restarted the client but got "This project doesn't support computers of type anonymous" from the server. Project admin says it's no problem on their side.
I tried to give the platform in various places but sched_request....xml always had <platform_name>anonymous</platform_name> in it. I think that's the way it is supposed to be ...

What else could I have done wrong? Like giving the wrong version? Wrong app name?

Hi, could anybody help?
Is this my fault or can there be anything done on the project server?
Any idea?

The Lattice Project
Compiled 64-bit Linux Garli-2.01 - can I use it?

Tesla is the microarchitecture.

When you tell me you have a Tesla in your computer, I'll think of this thing:

The rest of them are Geforce models, with a number. To me. To most of the people using them, I think. But if you want to be politically correct on these things, go ahead.

Next I'll be talking about the electric sports car Tesla.

:P Relax, that was for Sam and my own clarification. I didn't want to better you. Peace?^^

It's still confusing: You're saying that limit, time and usage all have the same meaning in BOINC terms?
I wrote a script thinking that setting cpu_usage_limit was different from stopping a task (Linux BOINC temperature script).

Looking at System Monitor and top it looks like tasks are running approximately at my value (now at about 40% maybe stopping one or two seconds). So seconds might not be the correct dimension ...?

All Nvidia GPUs from an 8300GT and higher will be able to do CUDA.

You probably mean 8500GT or 8400GS. GPU model should be G80 upwards (Tesla is the microarchitecture. Cards called Quadro could even be Kepler.).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA
https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NVIDIA_Graphics_Processing_Units

Also note that some projects need a certain "Compute Capability":
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing

There's also no real need to buy a new card for that computer, second or third hand is good enough.

Now there are other problems with second hand. One counter-argument is the encouragement of the throw-away society. Sorry.

Is it possible to keep two instances of BOINC running with different configuration files?
I'm not sure but in the meantime it could be another way to keep two GPUs running independently.

As far as your original question goes: Yes, a graphic card with GPGPU would be ideal for you. May that be AMD FireStream or Nvidia CUDA.

This is more a question for a hardware board but 915G was introduced in June 2004. I'm guessing you have PCI Express Version 1.x but it's backward compatible: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2013016/pci-express-gpus-backwards-compatible-slots.html
So version-wise you can put a PCIe 2 card into a PCIe 1.x slot.

Size-wise you can also put a PCIe x1 card into a PCIe x16 slot:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/205984-33-card-slot

Look also at this post and thread for "efficiency":
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=65362&postid=1149951

Microarchitecture is another question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA#Supported_GPUs
I think you could even go for Fermi ...

As you can see I thought about upgrading myself but I'm also accounting production, transport and the additional power consumption into the efficiency formula ... YMMV.

I knew, I won't use the CPU to do the project, only GPU.

If you want to make a "dedicated device" out of it, why not?

It haven't been use for a long time...

Why not? It's embodied grid energy.^^ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embodied_energy
