Use
"C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boincmgr.exe" /s
instead of
"C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boincmgr.exe"

(Start / Programs / Start Up / BOINC - rightclick - Properties)

Help says to give the account key and the master prohect URL while connecting to a project.
But the dialog asks only for the Master URL, not the account key.

Later on, the connect failed and in the log messages appears

...

Somebody has an idea?
I'm using BOINC Manager 5.2.8

When I see error number 500 ... you have probably the same problem as me.
Are you connected through proxy server which requires authorization?
I was told version 5.2.x use some standard libraries for work with proxies.
Older version (4.x) used it's own to code for this work. There is probably some problem with standard libraries or BOINC don't use them correctly. For example on my computer I have to use version 4.71 to be able to connect to projects. When I use version 5.2.x, I get error 500 everytime.

Try to download and install BOINC version 4.71. You can find it here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/

If you have already installed BOINC 5.2.x, you have to install version 4.71 two times. I don't know why, but after first installation there are no *.exe files installed. During second installation just choose Repair and continue. Maybe you will need to reset your computer after second installation.

Good luck ;-]

I have been looking around and around...

IF (!) you are connected to internet through proxy, you can write down settings from: START / Control Panels / Internet settings / Connections

If you are connected directly, you can leave these settings blank.

One possible problem - using BOINC 5.2.x I CANNOT connect through proxy (which requires authorization). With BOINC 4.xx can connect without problem. Now will try 5.2.8 and hope :)

Or my old computer (Laptop Celeron 1.33G) is too slow to handle these fancy screensavers?

The screensavers use any graphics card processing that is available, and typically affect the speed of the application by 10% or less. However, if your graphics processing "shares" memory and processing power with the main CPU (which is likely on a low-end laptop) then it is possible that the graphics will take much more of the time away from the app.

You can even set how much of processor time could be consumed by graphical computing. There is project specific setting in your account setting, at least for Seti@home. You can find "Maximum CPU % for graphics (0 ... 100)" there. If you reduce this setting, you will get less frames per second, but more power for crunching. Also other parameters can affect cpu load. Text style, Graph style and Maximum frames per second. I played with these parameters long time ago, so maybe something has changed. And to see these parameters maybe you have to set "Graphics preferences" to "Custom".

Yes, I understand you very well. I also use different passwords for different purposes. But this is special case. It's my company notebook and by default my login password is also used as firewall password. I cannot change this rule.

Now I have only two possibilities: To risk somebody will find my password,
or to delete BOINC.

Btw: You know Dirac? I'm fairly surprised :]

Hi,
I have also problem to connect through firewall since version 5.2.x
After upgrading to these versions I cannot send results, report them
and get new wu's. Everytime getting this:
15.11.2005 6:51:37|SETI@home|Reason: Requested by user
15.11.2005 6:51:37|SETI@home|Requesting 14116 seconds of new work, and reporting 15 results
15.11.2005 6:51:42|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of 500
15.11.2005 6:51:42|SETI@home|No schedulers responded

Today I tried to downgrade to ver4.71. over 5.2.7.
Note: Need to run instalator twice, if somebody want to test it. After first run you get an error message, because no exe files are installed. After second run of installator (choose 'Repair') everything works well.
Ok, after downgrade (and restart of PC) I was able to send/receive/report results without problems.
Question is - why I can connect with 4.71 and cannot connect with 5.2.x ?
I made no changes in settings during experiments with different 5.2.x versions (today tested 5.2.7, 5.2.6, 5.2.2)

Running WinXP SP2, Dell notebook, BOINC 5.2.7 with only Seti@home project, connected through 'big company' firewall.
Edit: BOINC installed as shared user installation, screensaver disabled

Big thanks for help (otherwise I have to keep version 4.71)

Hi everybody

I found in files 'client_state_prev.xml' and 'client_state_prev.xml' in BOINC root folder
my http proxy login name and password.
These information were in readable form (!!!), not coded, hashed, etc.
Anybody can suppose this name/pswd is used also for my Windows login and he will be right. In many companies login for proxy is automaticaly updated from login to domain.
Btw, these login informations are also included in
'slots/0/init_data.xml'
Don't like this situation. BOINC is now most unsecure software in my PC. Talking about company PC, where some people are allowed to use my PC, usually under my login. There is no other (easy) way, how these people can found my login name/paswd, except of BOINC.

Have a nice day,
Spok
