All this hardware sitting idle or on backup is frustrating. It is, but I am glad that Dr. K. gave us notice so we could all immediately switch to the backups smoothly, rather than floundering around posting madly wondering what is going on for half a day or so. We've had unplanned outrages this long over weekends where exactly that happened. So, in the interim, as long as the hardware is doing some form of science, I'll happily ride it out. :^)

We are now into the second day of the outage. We hope to wrap this up tomorrow. The reorganization of the database will help us reduce its size and this, in turn, should speed it up.

Obviously the project has to to be shut down for this, as this server controls just about everything and otherwise there would be the possibility of corrupting the science database badly, which would wreck the entire project. It was indicated that if the problem can't be isolated today, we may throw together an impromptu fundraiser and buy some new hardware to prevent this from happening in future. Either way, the out(r)age should end soon.

We're doing a more extensive reorganization than usual to try to resolve some of the database performance problems we've been experiencing. The outage may extend for more than 24 hours. I'm glad they are getting this out of the way... whatever it takes (and there will doubtless be more.) Otherwise there's no point in introducing yet another data source (Parkes) when the infrastructure can't even reliably handle what we already have. Short term pain, long term gain. Lots of other projects to help out while it's being worked on.

I think this one may be my "fault". :^p I e-mailed Dr. K. with the carolyn database errors that I was seeing in the profiles and stats. pages. A few minutes later it was down for maintenance. I'm glad it's being fixed... the last thing we need is for the database(s) to get corrupted and need a rebuild lasting a day or more.

Keep it nice! :^) Would either of you two Gentlemen like to give me one single piece of sensible evidence why a scientific project like Seti needs to have a politics thread? And specifically bearing in mind the cess pit that is the one at Seti. I'd guess because it keeps the cess in the pit rather than polluting the rest of the forum, so inflammatory stuff isn't causing grief in the Cafe or other more pleasant and relaxed places.
