Hi Saenger,

Who has access to the private data asked on the very first page (and probably more to follow)?
How is the trustworthiness of this possible private data harvesting tool proven?

I'll have to discuss this question with Andrew, I don't know how to research this question.

In the pivacy policy it's differentiated between the user (that's if I understand it correct the originator of the survey, Jack, not us participants) and a company called "MarketTools, Inc.". I suspect private companies of not treating my private data confidential as a first guess, they have to prove their trustworthiness somehow. Is it absolute guaranteed that my private data will never be used for other purposes but this survey, and definitely not in some unwanted marketing lists?

"MarketTools, Inc." provides a service for our Non-profit corporation. Our non-profit corporation is called "The Foundation for Computer Science & Learning" which is a newly formed organization established to advocate and promote BOINC projects. The purpose for these questions is for our presentation and paper we intend to publish. We don't ask any contact information, so I don't see how it could be used in a marketing list. Furthermore, that is not our intention.

We do have a revised survey now, http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB2286WHPXQ8K

Hi,
Any chance the EU store could have polo shirts similar to those in the US store? Or would they not be profitable enough? I'd certainly prefer a BOINC polo over a T-shirt, but that's just me. I'll be buying a t-shirt anyway if it's not possible.

Edit: Perhaps I should have said 'popular enough' instead of popular. I don't know how these things work and I would obviously not want the store to loose money.

Which polo do you like? The white or black? You should ask Rytis since he established the EU store. As far as being popular, that's not an issue with Spreadshirt. The store will host the site despite popularity, and I don't profit from the sales anyway.

Its an interesting thought Jack!

1. How would you plan to distribute the survey?

This is a delicate question. We are planning to send a message to project administrators and ask them to distribute to their users. I don't know what the best strategy would be.

1) Certainly if Admins send an email to all their users asking them to fill it out, we would get lots of responses. Some of this would be negative because many people do not want to be bothered. That might turn people off.

2) Or they can post it on their forums where a tiny fraction of the users visit regularly.

3) Then there is RSS feeds.

So I think I can provide suggestions to the Admins. Obviously it is up to them if they want to participate.

2. Would you expect a good response from both project admins and users?

We will have to see how this turns out.

3. Is it likely to be much different to the current BOINC user survey? Or why do a different one instead of full analysis of the current survey?

Yes, this will be different and specifically address demographic questions. Our intention is to support arguments for our paper

4. Who would you present the results to and what do you think might happen as a result of the survey?

We will present preliminary results to project admins at Delaware and Grenoble. Then perform more comprehensive analysis on a larger sample. We intend to submit variations on this paper to different audiences. Ultimitately, we want to figure out how to improve our marketing on BOINC, figure out who uses BOINC, how we can get more people involved and maintain retention. We have some ideas on achieving these goals, we want to find evidence that to support our arguements.

I can foresee great difficulty in this, but the concept is good!

John.

Hello everyone,

I have been putting together a BOINC project for the last 6 months or so and I've realized that a prime demographic is going almost completely unnoticed -- College Kids!

First of all, the vast majority are computer-literate enough to start BOINC and keep it running.

Second, their computers are primarily text-editing and music playing machines, both of which leave plenty of time and cpu cycles for BOINC.

Third, they are easily susceptible to the bandwagon effect (I don't feel bad saying that, as I am a college kid, and I know full well how persuasive the effect can be).

I believe the only thing preventing this demographic from participating is lack of awareness. To battle this, I will hopefully be interviewed by my University's Student Newspaper, and I will try to give a lot of good reasons why people should donate their extra computing time, if not to my project , then to any of the others.

So if any of you have the ability to spread awareness on a college campus, I really feel that it would be time well spent.

I'm going about this myself I like John's suggestion about poster, but how about giving people free stuff? I understand you probably have a budget issue. But if you can afford something cheap with your logo and url. Pens, Pencils, buttons, stickers, hand them out on a campus and use that interaction to start a conversation. Maybe you have a way to make t-shirts really cheap.

Bad Penguin is making me some postcards. He did that for Folding@Home.

In addition to the spreadshirt store for US. I recently created a BOINC store in Cafepress. Here I stick to the standard BOINC logo. Again, I am not receiving any financial return from these purchases, though the company charges for its service.

See what you think about this Hydrogen@Home logo. I have taken a comic book style for it. Maybe you despise it? In that case, give me an idea to run with. Better yet, exercise some of your own artistic talent!

Andrew Gillette and I would like to distribute a set of surveys on the demographics of the BOINC Community. We would like to tailor our questions specific groups within the Community such as Volunteers and Admins. We intend to submit the results through a publication and present some of these findings in a presentation.

Thoughts?

For some time I've been fascinated by the idea of a space elevator as described in 3001. Arthur C. Clarke proposed using carbon dienes

which form strong molecular chains.

Much of the focus in space elevators looks at improving the tensile strength so the materials can support the weight of these massive structures. But another outside the box idea I've toyed with, using materials lighter than air. In this manner, you are not worried about the weight of objects pushing down; instead, containing gases.

Imagine a sturdy cylinder, linked to a series of sturdy cylinders. Surround each segment with a balloon containing a mixture of helium and hydrogen that makes the gas flame retardant.
