Do we even know enough about the Red Planet at this stage to run any meaningful models? Look how difficult it is to make good climate models for Earth, and we have been studying this planet for thousands of years.
Terraforming is an extremely slow process, I really do not see the point in putting resources into it before we have even landed on the planet.

Is port 443 allowed to communicate with the internet in your local firewall?

Yes, I tried disabling the firewall entirely before starting Boinc.

I've just checked, and I only have openssl 1.0.0 installed:

Anyway, I've got Boinc-6.12.26 to work with several projects, and am slowly adding more to find out which cause problems. So far I can only confirm that WCG causes the above error, as soon as I attach it.

Is there any kind of debug info I can provide to help solve this problem?

For any others who may run into the problem I've got: It seems that some project causes the memory allocation error when trying to start Boinc 6.12.26. For me, the solution was indeed to remove all files related to Boinc and reemerge.
Even so, trying to run the client manually from anywhere outside /var/lib/boinc ALSO resulted in an error, hence my confusion.

Anyway, thanks for your input here and at the Gentoo boards, Trog Dog!

Posted 30 May 2011 by Kenneth Larsen 		I've finally got it working, and the error was probably due to my stupidity... If you look at the above log I'm trying to start the client from my home directory. However, under Gentoo boinc runs as user "boinc" which does not have access to that directory.
Anyway, I completely wiped Boinc from my system, losing some 300h of a CPDN model and am now trying to connect to BAM which seems to be down momentarily (or I have a new problem on my hands...).

Posted 20 Apr 2010 by Kenneth Larsen 		Hello, I've had this problem for many months now - low cpu intensity projects like QCN run at nice 19 like all other projects under boinc for linux x86_64. I've noticed this on several versions of boinc, latest on 6.10.36.
This is a big issue for me as QCN continously recalibrates the sensor until the wu crashes due to too many restarts. If I manually set the process to a higher nice setting it runs flawlessly.
Can this be fixed in a later boinc version or is there a workaround?

Works for me. If you disable network activity, BOINC doesn't do any network activity on its own. Only if you explicitly tell it to, by for example updating a project.


I think you have misunderstood the issue: the problem is that it is simply not possible to start Boinc without some kind of net connection. For example, on my Gentoo machine I have to start either the cable or wireless card to be able to start Boinc. It doesn't matter if there is any internet behind the router, Boinc just needs some network.
It would be nice if this could get fixed in the future.
