2) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Trying to understand Statistics (Message 3223)
Posted 24 Feb 2006 by MJKelleher
Post:
Manager=v5.2.13, just installed BOINC a few days ago.
I processed over 600 units for SETI before suspending work on the project. My user average and total for SETI still shows as increasing. The Days does show -6,-5,-4, then nothing to the end, but it's not flatlining, it's still shows increasing per day.

After you stop returning work, you've got results waiting for a quorum to complete. Until that happens, the work doesn't get validated and you don't get credit. It can take several days, in some cases longer for that credit to get applied. After a while, though, that'll stop and you'll flatline.
For Predictor, in 4 days I achieved a user total of about 350 units, then in the last day it shows a marked decrease in the user total, even though Predictor is process LOTS of transactions. The user average is leveling off reasonably at about 50 (proving the total should be increasing). I'm not sure I understand what the stats are for WCG, it was flatlined for a couple days and then jumped to about 8/day. Maybe they were down?

For Predictor, I'd suggest going to your account on their site and see what's being shown for your results. Credit going down isn't usual, are you sure you weren't looking at the average instead of the total? I don't know anything about WCG, not attached there, again check their site for news on outages or other unusual occurrances. Timing may also be a factor in getting credit there.

3) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Clean up old work on suspended project (Message 3222)

Post:
Manager=v5.2.13: I suspended SETI from getting new work but then it doesn't finish processing the one unit it has in the queue. I did not suspend work on that unit. The messages log says "not requesting new work or reporting results". How do I get it to finish and report that one unit without getting a new one? Is this a bug or would it be an enhancement to have a checkbox that asks whether existing work units should be finished prior to suspension?

Rather than Suspend, on the Projects tab you need to select SETI and click the button for No New Work. That'll allow the result to finish and upload. After that, you can suspend, or detach, whatever works for you.

If I recall correctly, it's as designed. Upload when complete, but wait for something else connecting, or the "Connect to network about every time" after the work uploads. That delay is about right for this computer.

For now my 98SE systems are running seti "classic"

Does your 98SE machine have the specs to run BOINC or SETI-BOINC? My Win98SE is running SETI and Protein with no problems. Doesn't have the specs for Einstein or CPDN, haven't tried any others on that one.

6) Message boards : BOINC Manager : installing BOINC 4.45 problem (Message 507)

On a 0.2 GHz MMX with 192 RAM and Win98, which i use with ICS to connect my private network to my ISP, i was only able to install the Single-user installation although i would prefer the Service installation.

As i am not able to shutdown or restart Win98 without exiting 4.45 first (or kill its process during shutdown) i intend to replace this useless piece of shit with the older 4.19 as soon as possible. As 4.18 was running without such problems with WinME on another computer i hope this will solve my problem with the blocked shutdown.

That's not a BOINC problem, it's a Windows 98 problem. Installing as a service isn't supported by Win98 for anything. As for the shutdown issue, there have been threads about it on the SETI@Home Questions & Problems boards. Here is one such, with a solution, a link to a downloadable .pif file.

7) Message boards : BOINC Manager : no work gets in (Message 33)

Post:
since i have boinc 4.45 i often just am not getting work.

i run seti and lhc.
does this have to do with the seti problems? nothing uploads and stays on my software.

I believe this is related to a bug in the BOINC Manager that is fixed in an upcoming version. BOINC counts the work waiting to upload as being in process, so thinks it doesn't need to download more. Version 4.72 is in beta testing, and many of us are eagerly awaiting its release, for this and other fixes.
(And if I'm incorrect, somebody will be along soon with the right info!)
