1) Message boards : The Lounge : Let's talk politics
Message 114252 Posted 14 Jul 2024 by BOINC Moderator |
Reopening this thread to allow you to talk about the attempt on Trump's life. Keep it civil. |
2) Message boards : Projects : Known potential evil applications of some BOINC projects?
Message 113844 Posted 28 Mar 2024 by BOINC Moderator |
Cleaned up. Please keep politics out of any forum, aside from maybe the Lounge. |
3) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Where is the boinc cc_config.xml file suppose to reside?
Message 113393 Posted 18 Jan 2024 by BOINC Moderator |
You asked the same question in https://boinc.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=15177 and got some answers there, so closing this thread as doublepost. |
4) Message boards : Questions and problems : Only 1 out of seven projects reporting work
Message 113130 Posted 17 Nov 2023 by BOINC Moderator |
Can everyone please keep this chatter about the climate outside this thread, and concentrate on helping the OP with his problem, instead of immediately trying to fix global problems as well? |
5) Message boards : Questions and problems : Improving implementation of components associated with the function “RPC_CLIENT::get_reply”
Message 112867 Posted 9 Oct 2023 by BOINC Moderator |
Markus is enjoying a quiet two week vacation at a place where he can question everything repeatedly , ignoring all the answers, alone. |
6) Message boards : Promotion : New BOINC Promotional cards, flyers
Message 112681 Posted 13 Sep 2023 by BOINC Moderator |
Know that the SCI does not have an official BOINC affiliation or backing. It would be nice if SCI posted about that in their postings. |
7) Message boards : Questions and problems : Returning, now connection problem?

Hello,No we didn't, there's no record of us hiding your post. And usually when deleting the first post, the whole thread goes along as well. This looks more like a database corruption, I will report it to David. Excuses for it happening. |
9) Message boards : Promotion : BOINC Census 2022!
Message 110543 Posted 23 Nov 2022 by BOINC Moderator |
Please know that The Science Commons Initiative is not officially (supported by) BOINC, and that this census isn't initiated by BOINC. We do not know what happens with all information you give. It will not be used to make BOINC better. |
10) Message boards : Questions and problems : Install Windows 11 on an "Old PC"
Message 110398 Posted 9 Nov 2022 by BOINC Moderator |
We were getting user reports of spam from this thread, due to the nature of the links given in it. I did check earlier this week at the links given and saw nothing wrong with relation to it being a commercial website that asks money for all its apps. Most apps and utilities can be downloaded for free from this site, with just a handful also offering a paid version but that's because they are also available in paid versions (for companies mostly). I'm just not sure if I should reopen the thread purely based on it being advice to load Windows 11 on hardware that's not recommended for it. Plus we're the BOINC forums, this has in essence nothing to do with BOINC. But if the thread owner disagrees, he can contact the moderators via the red-X and make his statement. |
11) Message boards : Projects : BOINC Project Collatz Conjecture is FAKE?
Message 109809 Posted 12 Sep 2022 by BOINC Moderator |
Les, there was some chatter a while back here on the BOINC forum that was shut down by moderator's due to violation of forum rules. Stick to the facts please. That other thread auto-locked due to inactivity. May I please ask you to stop telling users here what they can and cannot post about? With your threats of moderation, while trying to tell the moderators what to do as well. We allow that concept of free speech very broadly, as we're supposed to do. I see nothing wrong with the OP's post. All you had to do was post the facts why Collatz is offline. |

Did someone forget his flight's booking number that he had to post it all over the forums as a reminder? We're not your agenda! |

you need to not only ban the account, but also the IP range, as he's been known to create several aliases.Banning IP addresses isn't an option as that needs to be done on the (firewall) server of the University, and I'm not going to ask that of David as I know his answer: not necessary. Aside from that, IP addresses aren't all static, some are dynamic. You wouldn't want to block many other people just over one guy. We can deal with his aliases. I've been watching these threads the past weeks and have seen a pretty coherent conversation with him by many of you. If you find he's spreading misinformation, you can call him out on that. Or all stop reacting to his posts. If he doesn't get any reactions, he'll go elsewhere where he will find people to react to him. Simple as that. |

Message 109400 Posted 20 Jul 2022 by BOINC Moderator |
yeah I don't really get why he hasn't been permanently banned at this point. he gets vacations often. but you keep letting him back over and over. why?Because by the forum's moderation rules we're only allowed to permaban spammers immediately, the rest of the time we have to look at the severity of what's said and what consequences it has on the discussion and decide upon things without our mood allowing interference. And that's not easy. As some of you flame bait him into saying things as well, so if I were to permaban him over an answer he gave, I should do that to those who flame baited as well. Rest assured, yesterday was no flame bait, but post after post from him with deliberate misinformation. |

I've seen your reports - and those of others. And I've acted on some of them. But I've not actively followed all the conversations, been busy with personal stuff, so some I may have let go of. We have two more moderators walking around here, I'm of the impression, if I don't do something and they don't, is it that bad then what's written? I do encourage a lively discussion and don't want to enforce the rules in a heavy handed way. We all learned from Seti that that's not the way to do things, right? This afternoon however there were just some things that I thought went too far. Downplaying heat deaths on children and the (demented) elderly as if they know what heat is and how to deal with it, was a door too far for me. I'm sure he sees it differently. He always does. |

Okay, I've given Peter a vacation with an assignment, to study what heat does to little children and the elderly (and in some cases to pets). And that he'll show his new found knowledge when he returns in due time. In the meantime, I've been watching this rollercoaster the past weeks and must say I don't know how to handle it. I think I should give all of us a warning, for flame baiting. Maybe I should just give all of us a vacation for some time but then there's no one to answer the forums. I could use hints. So a directive, when you see something happen in one of these threads that you don't feel well about, use the red X to report that. I'll direct the moderators to not let it run out of hand so much. But perhaps that they too don't know how to handle this. |
