The Facebook application is a BETA test. If you don't want to run possibly more problematic software or figure your way out of the (apparent) confusing pages at Facebook and GridRepublic, then do NOT run this software but continue using normal Berkeley BOINC.

If you do want to run it, uninstall your present BOINC first through Add/Remove Programs, make backups of your BOINC Data directory. Then start from the Facebook site link. There's no way around that.

I'm sure they have their own FAQ/forums, will go hunt/ask for links towards them.

Hello I am volunteering with GridRepublic and can answer questions as best I can.

The PTP Facebook application distributes BOINC 6.8.13 with a simplified custom installer which also includes a PTP skin for simple view and a pretty cool default screensaver which alternates with project screensavers.

The PTP FAQ/forums are accessible through the PTP application and for those not using the application you can access the same destinations linked from the application here as the application is a seamless integration with GridRepublic with a PTP branding. To post to the discussion board or help add content to the wiki interface you will need to create a GridRepublic account. Here you can find Advocacy, Help, Projects list, Development, and a General Cafe for discussion.[/url]

It looks like ATI GPU support for the BOINC software isn't coming until version 6.10.X see roadmap here

So projects who are must be using their own work arounds to distribute to ATI GPU's.

Have you checked out what GridRepublic is doing? I have been working with them on many fronts to help raise volunteer computing to the public view and inspire their interest and participation.

I've added it to my signature and been just trying to raise awareness as I agree that the more secure computers are the better we all are in the end. Maybe security companies should include this with their software.

Also if you didn't notice there is a nice feature where you can compare your score to the rest of the world and see general area's (country, state, etc) scores. Its interesting to see how long after Patch Tuesdays it takes for the scores to climb back up again.

So there is a free program (for personal use) called Secunia PSI which scans your computer and tells you which are insecure and how to fix them. Normally its just a simple update to the latest version.

I first heard of it from PC Magazine and now I recommend it to all Windows users. It is a pretty handy program.

Thought I should share this with the BOINC community if people haven't heard. They are also looking for help translating.

GridRepublic is working on a website overhaul due in the next month or so. I'd say check it out again later.

You may want to consider using an account manager to enable control of the multiple computers from one source. With a single login you can change the settings and projects for all the computers in a simple and easy to use interface.

I recommend checking out GridRepublic http://www.gridrepublic.org

David Anderson was interviewed on FLOSS Weekly with Leo Laporte today about BOINC. I was only able to catch the last 10 minutes, but great PR. FLOSS Episode 60 due out on March 16th I believe.

From my understanding of things is BOINC does not support one over the other, but as there is demand the features needed are added. So when a project requests support for ATI GPU's it will be supported. Which I think is currently in process to add support, but the real thing is the projects determine what is used so if there is no demand then there is no priority for that to be added when there are so many things that need to be done.

And as for
if BOINC really is taking full advantage of the computer's capabilities
BOINC doesn't do science work. It's just the house keeper / traffic director. Optimising it may gain you extra credits for those projects still using benchmark values for their credit calcs, but that's all you'll achieve.

Sorry if I was not clear, but I understand the basic functions of BOINC vs a project app. Where BOINC is the distributor and the Apps do the work.

My question which has been more or less answered by Gundolf and yourself was regarding to the distribution of applications and whether there was a way to determine and distribute applications with optimizations for certain instruction sets and cpus.

In short the answer as I understand is yes there is a way, but the projects have to detect what are the capabilities upon first attachment. Also I as I understand BOINC does not tell a project that a computer has x, y ,z and send an app that best works for these.

Ok I know that some projects have optimized apps for sse sse2 and so on, but whether the applications are official or not is not the question.

My question is if a project approved an optimized app and added it to the server as a distributed exe. What app will be distributed? Would the optimized apps with sse2 go to the computers with that capability and the default run on anything app go out to the rest? Or can projects only distribute one app and that is why most only release one version of an app?

I am not a programmer, but this question was raised in a discussion among friends regarding BOINC. My friends an I wanted to know if BOINC really is taking full advantage of the computer's capabilities. I don't know anything about optimizing codes and if it is just a compiler thing or has to be a change of code. Any insight would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Yes, I have seen the wiki and it did not resolve my question.

I just wanted to understand if OpenCL is creating a cross platform thing as CUDA does for NVIDIA cards?

From the OpenCL site I saw that AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel were supporting OpenCL. Can anyone help to explain or correct me thanks?

What is OpenCL and how is it related to CUDA?
I could not find much explaining OpenCL.

Want to help make the efforts of BOINC into something that the whole world knows about?

GridRepublic is in need for experienced php and web developers to work on improving our site's features and function. If you know any other developers who would volunteer their effort let them know of this opportunity there is enough to go around.

We create an easy way to join any project and a more efficient way to market to the public.

contact: developers[at]gridrepublic[d0t]org for more details

Some of the topics needed help are:
-Search engine optimization
-back end optimization
-BOINC-Wide security system
-"invite a friend" function
-translation function
and many more.

Great the discussion is starting.

Now if we can aim to get 2-5 large project managers involved and 2-5 mid to small project managers involved I think that we would have the right people present to start with a first conference call to get a better understanding of each other and to cover some of the topics found in Jack's discussion list. I also have outlined my vision of the unification and posted a link of of there too.

Discussion Topic Thread Link

To unfortunate news Skypecast has been temporarily removed by the people at Skype so an alternate conference calling is needed. I have found free open source for up to 20 person conference called dimdim. It which provides chat, sharing desktops, and a shared white board, but only has audio for 3 people to talk at a time and the host chooses who to give the mic to and has the power to take it away. One bad thing I cant get my mic to work on it. This would work for our needs, but if anyone else knows of a free conference program with voice being the importance then please post it here.

Excellent list.

I have provided what my vision is for the unification and it covers my opinion on what is or is not and some of the things we should talk about. I look at my vision as just the beginnings to a discussion not what has to happen. It can be found here The Vision.
